Chris Martinez, a lifelong Winters resident, died unexpectedly of heart failure on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at his home in Winters. Born on October 4, 1949 in Woodland, California, he was 55 years old.
Mr. Martinez was raised in Winters and graduated from Winters High School. He worked on the family ranch in Winters for many years, driving all over Northern California as a parts runner. He had made many friends in the towns that he went to get the parts needed for the ranch. He was described as an avid sports fan and never missed any sporting event at Winters High School. He was also an avid fan of UC Davis Athletics.
Family and friends say Mr. Martinez never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone; he was an icon of the Winters Community and was well liked by all; he had a great sense of humor and was quick to make a teasing comment, often bringing laughter and joy to all he interacted with; he will be greatly missed by the Winters Community.
He is survived by his brothers Joseph R. Martinez and wife Shelly, Emilio R. Martinez, and Antonio Martinez and wife Frances, all of Winters; niece Rosemary Martinez of Clear Lake, and nephews Joseph Martinez, Ryan Martinez, and Brett Martinez, all of Winters.
He was preceded in death by his parents Cristobal and Isabel Martinez, and his nephew Christopher F. Martinez.
A memorial service was planned for Wednesday, March 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Gateway Chapel. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Mr. Martinez’ name to the Winters Healthcare Foundation, PO Box 367, Winters, California, 95694.
The staff of Davis Funeral Chapel extends their condolences to Mr. Martinez’ family, and considered him their friend. He was always quick to help them out by unloading flowers at the church or Cemetery, and of course, straightening their ties. Funerals in Winters will not be the same without him. We miss you, Chris.
Bud Galloway passed away on March 9, at the UC Davis Medical Center. Born on April 19, 1921 in Calico Rock, Arkansas, he was 83 years old.
Mr. Galloway served in World War II as a gunner on the USS Helena for 6 years. He came to Winters in 1948 where he raised his family. He retired from Syar Industries in 1980. He relocated to Douglas Flats where he spent the remainder of his life.
Mr. Galloway is survived by three children, son Lynn, son and daughter-in law Rick and Dawn Galloway, daughter and son-in-law Sherry and Floyd Nichols. Grandchildren Stacy and Eric Nires, Julie Nichols, Gina Wilkenson, Robert, Brandy, Yvonne, James, Ben, John and Katie Galloway. Also nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vada and son Ken Galloway.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 18, at 1 p.m. at Kraft Brothers, 175 Second Street, Woodland.
Alyce Williams Lowrey Jewett passed away on March 8, 2005, at the age of 96.
She was a prominent California agricultural leader and well known U.C. Davis teacher, colleague of one of U.C. Davis’ founders, Judge Peter Shields. A 1931 U. C. Davis, animal husbandry Phi Beta Kappa graduate, she was asked by John Kenneth Galbraith to follow him in teaching agricultural economics at UC Davis, and was a well-known mentor to many UC Davis agriculture students. Jewett and her late husband, Lindsay "Red" Jewett, were student and alumni leaders and were honored many times by their Alma Mater. Lindsay taught agriculture at Winters High School for a number of years.
Memorial services will be held in Fall River Mills at the Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, and an informal gathering will be held at International House in Davis on Tuesday, April 12 at 3 p.m. for those who wish to remember Alyce.
Hosting the event will be Dan and Diana Dooley, of Visalia, Marc and Gerda Faye, of Knights Landing, Don and Lou McNary, of Woodland, Richard and Evelyne Rominger, of Winters, and Dick and Judy Wydick, of Davis.
Wilma Sue McCracken died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Saturday, March 5, at Sutter Davis Hospital in Davis. Born on September 9, 1947, in Osceola, Arkansas, she was 57 years old.
Mrs. McCracken came to Winters at the age of 3 years, and was a graduate of Winters High School. She worked as a bookkeeper for Blazer Rock in Napa. She was the past president of the Winters Little League, and was very involved in Girl Scouts. Her family said she loved bingo, ocean cruises to Mexico, but most of all she enjoyed spoiling her grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her father Thurman Pinkston.
She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Michael J. McCracken of Winters, her mother Delberta Nana Pinkston of Winters, children; Tawnya Martin and her husband Jeff of Ogden, Utah, and Courtney McCracken of Esparto. She is further survived by her grandchildren Robert James Martin, Stewart McCracken and Barbara Martin, sisters; Debbie Godden of Winters, and Sheila Holman of Elk Grove.
Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 9, from 5-9 p.m. at Gateway Chapel located at 205 Main Street in Winters. Friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Thursday, March 10 at 1p.m. at Gateway Chapel. Burial will follow at the Winters Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
Russell Barton Cecil died at his home in Yreka on March 1. He was 86 years old.
A memorial service was held at Mount Shasta Memorial Chapel in Mount Shasta.
Born in Dixon on Nov. 15, 1918, to the late Warren Wadsworth Cecil and Clara Elma Horrigan, he spent most of his life as a resident of Dixon, Winters, Woodland, and Davis. A graduate of Dixon High School, he was a dairyman, rancher and surveyor.
His family described him as an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Day Cecil; and his sisters, Shirley Jungerman and Marion Walhberg.
He is survived by his sons, Bruce Cecil of Shingletown, and Brian Cecil and his wife Judy of Davis; his sisters, Wanda Snyder and Sharon Bailey; and a brother, Warren Cecil.
He is further survived by his grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, and Annie Cecil of Davis.
The family requests that memorials in his name be directed to the American Lung Association.
Rachel Udell. Graveside memorial services will be held on Friday, March 11, at 2 p.m. in the Dixon Cemetery(on Highway 113) for Rachel Udell, who passed away in Davis on February 28, just one week short of her 100th birthday.
She was born March 6, 1905, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Sager, pioneer residents of Winters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Udell, her sister, Clarz Sager, and her brother, Emil Sager.
Rachel was a linotype operator for more than 50 years, working for the Winters Express and the Dixon Tribune.
Mr. Roy Barth was born in Long Beach on April 28, 1916 and was 89 years old when he died on June 17. Living in Yolo County for 48 years, and a resident of Winters when he passed away, he was a farmer his entire life.
He graduated from Hollywood High School and served as commissioner of Madison Fire District for 38 years. He was the director of the Yolo County Flood Control and Water Conservation District for 35 years. For 18 years he was the Director of Association of California Water Agencies( ACWA and ACWA/JPIA). He was a member and vice president of Sacramento Valley Westside Canal Association for 13 years, and a member of Yolo County Resources Board. Mr. Barth was a member of the California Farm Bureau and Vice President of the Los Angeles County Farm Bureau. For 16 years he was a member of District #4 California Sugar Beet Growers Association and for 10 years he was the Director of Antelope Valley Soil Conservation District.
Mr. Barth is survived by his wife of 66 years, Catherine Louise DuBois Barth, his daughter, Mary Louise Barth of Concord, sons, Alfred LeRoy Barth of Woodland, Stanley Lowell Barth of Esparto, Steven Glenn Barth of Boise, and Thomas William Barth and Robert Carl Barth, both of Winters. He is also survived by his brother Arthur Barth of Lancaster. He leaves 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. His grandchildren are Erin Barth of Sacramento, Andreas Barth of Sacramento, Tirzah Barth of Rio Vista, Todd Barth of Davis, Tyson Barth of Virginia, Bjorn Barth of Woodland, Katie Wright of Woodland, T. J. Wright of Woodland, Jennisah Barth of Winters, and Eric, Evan, Connor and Neil Barth of Winters.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edward C. Barth and Elizabeth A. Barth, and his sisters, Ann Moore, Corrine Wilson, and Elma Waite.
There will be a vigil for Mr. Barth at 7 p.m. on June 23, at McNary’s Chapel in Woodland, and a funeral mass at 11 a.m. on June 24 at Holy Rosary Church with Michael McFadden officiating. Burial will be at Cottonwood Cemetery
immediately following mass.

Frank “EJ” Martinez, was born on January 13, 1977, EJ was 28 years old when he died on June 9.
He is survived by his mother Phyllis Blair, father, Frank R. Martinez, Jr., fiance, Jennifer Diehl, sister, Deanna Allen, nieces and a nephew.
EJ loved motorcycles, camping, snowboarding, skateboarding, water and being outdoors. He had a heart of gold. There was no better way to spell “friend.”
Memorial services will be held at Vaca Hills Chapel on Wednesday, June 22, at 6 p.m.
Emmerson Russell Rivard, aged 77 years, passed away on Sunday, June 5 at his Woodland home.
Born on May 24, 1928 in Newport, Michigan to Russell and Unice (Venier) Rivard, he graduated from Monroe High School class of 1946. After high school he moved to San Jose and attended San Jose State University where he obtained his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Mr. Rivard was employed by Lockheed in the aerospace industry for 20 years, and continued his career close to aeronautics working at the municipal airport for the City of San Jose as Senior Electrical Engineer until his retirement in 1984.
He was a Yolo County resident for the past five years, after traveling various areas, and was a lover of the outdoors, nature and wildlife.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Nancy Rivard of Woodland; a daughter, Virginia Neese and husband Ronald of Woodland; sons, Stanley James and wife Fern of Orangevale, and Robert Martinez and wife Charley of Winters; and a sister, Mary Burton of Newport, Michigan. His legacy also leaves seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Russell and Unice Rivard.
Future plans for a Celebration of Life are to be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Yolo Hospice in his name. Assisting the family with arrangements is Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland.
