Hope Bergsma
Hope Juliette Bergsma, a resident of Elk Grove since 1972, died Jan. 1, 2002 at the age of 92.
Mrs. Bergsma was born June 19, 1909 in Mexico and her most recent residence was SunBridge Care Home in Elk Grove.
During her time in Elk Grove, she served as secretary of the Emerald Park Homeowners Association and was active with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, where she was well-known for her Bible teachings and assistance to Hispanic families. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, decorating and ceramics.
Mrs. Bergsma was married twice: to Ed Fisk of San Leandro and to retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Earl R. Bergsma. During her working years she was the purchasing agent for Friden Calculators in San Leandro, and then worked for the Department of Equal Opportunity for the senior citizens community in Hayward.
She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Fisk; and her sisters, Christina May, Sally Sullivan and Emita Andreoli.
Mrs. Bergsma is survived by her children, Judith Bergsma-Simper and husband Robert of Sacramento and Clifford Bergsma and wife Sandra of Grass Valley; and grandchildren Steven and Laura.
Private services were held with interment at Camellia Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements were by North Sacramento Funeral Home.

Larry Derr
Doris Derr
A memorial service for both Lawrence Warren (Larry) Derr and his wife, Doris Ruth (Chicki) Derr, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Masonic Temple, 9829 Waterman Road, Elk Grove. Friends and relatives are invited.
Mr. Derr was a descendant of the pioneer J.M. Derr family of Elk Grove, which owned Derr Lumber Company and was instrumental in the construction of many homes throughout the Elk Grove area. He died Nov. 22, 2001 and his obituary appeared in the Nov. 30 issue of the Elk Grove Citizen.
Mrs. Derr died Feb. 6, 1999 and her obituary appeared in the Feb. 12, 1999 issue of the Citizen.
Services will be conducted under the auspices of Elk Grove Masonic Lodge No. 173.

Valanda Dumas
Valanda M. Dumas, a resident of Elk Grove since 1995, died Jan. 2, 2002 at the age of 91.
A native of Covington, Ky., she arrived in Van Nuys,  Calif. in 1952, where she lived for the next 43 years. She worked as a secretary and later took up oil painting as a hobby.
Mrs. Dumas was preceded in death by her brothers, Glenn and Johnny Cartwright; and her sister, Monica Nelson.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, William Dumas of Elk Grove; her children, Roger Lee Dumas and wife Mattie Lue of Florida and Thomas Gordon Dumas and wife Frances of Wilton; her grandchildren, Peggy Riffle, Valerie Keppinger, Rebecca Vasquez, Jennifer Jacobs, John Dumas and Trent Dumas; and her great-grandchildren, Kim Fox, Richard Fox, Billie Keppinger, Jeff Keppinger, Nick Baltzell, Ashlee Baltzell, Daniel Jacobs, Mark Jacobs, Luke Jacobs and Riley Dumas.
She was the sister of Gordon Cartwright of New Jersey.
Funeral services took place Jan. 6 followed by interment at South East Lawn Mortuary, Elk Grove.
Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Aid Society, 2641 Cottage Way, Suite 4, Sacramento, CA 95825.

Cheryl McCormack
Cheryl Lynn Summers McCormack, a former resident of Elk Grove, died Dec. 8, 2001 in Grants Pass, Ore. at the age of 53.
Mrs. McCormack was born March 29, 1948 in Lodi and grew up in Elk Grove, where she attended schools and graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1966. She was an active member of the Elk Grove Rebekah Lodge, the PTA and was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at age 12.
While in Elk Grove, she worked at Vann’s Restaurant, which was owned by her grandparents, Floyd and Vergie Frost.
She attended beauty college and worked in that field until allergies forced her to quit, then worked for several years in retail sales for Kmart and Wal-Mart.
Mrs. McCormack was an artist until a fall at work left her disabled. She won several ribbons at the State Fair for her ceramics, and her talents in floral arrangements and cake decorating led her to coordinate many weddings.
She also volunteered at Kaiser Hospital even though disabled, and helped out at a school for children with developmental needs, as her grandchild was developmentally disabled.
Mrs. McCormack was preceded in death by her father, Oscar Summers.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry McCormack of Grants Pass; her children, Jerry Lin McCormack and wife Cindy of Kissamee, Fla., and Lottie  White and husband Ray of Grants Pass; her parents, Bobby and Don Fisher of Grants Pass; and her grandchildren, Nick Ruth, Malyssa McCormack, Katelynn and David  White.
Mrs. McCormack was the sister of Rick Summers and wife Annette of Wilton, Timothy Summers and wife Betty, Kevin Summers and Collin Summers and wife Jennie all of Grants Pass.
Services took place Dec. 8 at Hull & Hull Funeral Chapel, Grants Pass, followed by entombment at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Terry Keyes
Terry W. Keyes, a 33-year resident of Elk Grove, died Jan. 2, 2002 following a long illness. He was 44.
Mr. Keyes was a native of Modesto and grew up in Elk Grove, graduating from Elk Grove High School. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard then the Army for 18 years, retiring as a staff sergeant in 1994.
He was preceded in death by his father, L. Earl Keyes.
Mr. Keyes is survived by his mother, Bernice Keyes of Elk Grove; his sisters, Sandra Anderson of Stockton, Irene Botts of Hood and Jacque Thomas of Elk Grove; his brother, Eldon Allen of Oregon; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Memorial services took place Saturday at Point Pleasant United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.
Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Suite 115, Sacramento, CA 95815.

Lynn Pierce
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 8 for Lynn Pierce, an 18-year resident of Elk Grove who died May 3, 2004 at the age of 84.
Mrs. Pierce was born in New York and grew up in the Long Island area. At the age of 21 she met a young naval officer and she and Larry Pierce were married in Pensacola, Fla.
As a Navy wife, she called many different places home, and managed to make them homey for her family. "She was a great Navy wife," said her husband. "She volunteered with the Navy Relief Society giving advice to young sailors and she gave wonderful dinner parties. And she always managed to be home when our boys were out of school."
Following his retirement in 1961, the Pierces moved to the Bay Area where Mrs. Pierce become involved with the Braille Guild, chairing the San Mateo County chapter for five years.
Mr. Pierce also commented on his wife's artistic abilities, both as a painter and as an organist. "She led the group in making needlepoint banners for our church, and that set the standards for the rest to follow."
The couple came to Elk Grove 18 years ago and Mrs. Pierce was captain of the Niners, a golf group at Valley Hi Country Club, for a year.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Larry Pierce of Elk Grove; her sons, Edwin Pierce II and wife Sveta of Hayward and Don Pierce and wife Florence of Elk Grove; five granddaughters, Joanne Pierce, Amy Caston and Sarah Thomas all of Sacramento, Laura Constantine of Elk Grove and Judi Pierce of Alameda; and two great-grandchildren, Annika and Aidan.
Mrs. Pierce was the sister of Henry Owen III of Virginia.
Visitation is today (Friday) from noon to 8 p.m. at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Saturday's services begin at 11 a.m., also in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.
Interment services will be Monday, May 10 at 2 p.m. in Hilltop Cemetery on Waterman Road.

Ronald Fenis
Funeral services will take place Tuesday, May 11 for Ronald C. (Bobby) Fenis, a 63-year resident of Elk Grove who died May 1, 2004 at the age of 97.
Mr. Fenis was born Jan. 2, 1907 in Naravacan, Illocos Sur, Philippines.
He worked for the Sacramento Army Depot until retiring.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Violet of Elk Grove; his children, Jean Arellano and husband Candy, George Fenis and wife Teresa, James and Timothy Fenis all of Elk Grove; and his grandchildren, Dave Arellano and wife Heidi, Teres and husband Steve Renowden, Maria Carrasco, Kimberly Fenis and Ronald Fenis all of Elk Grove and Lisa Burleson of Texarkana,  Texas.
Mr. Fenis was the brother of Benjamin Fines of Hawaii and great-grandfather of 16. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday, May 10 from noon to 7 p.m. followed by a recitation of the rosary at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Tuesday's services begin at 10 a.m. also at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, followed by a reception at the Elk Grove Elks Lodge on Survey Road. Interment is private.
