Otto Hansen
Graveside services will take place Sunday, Oct. 9 for Otto Hansen, a native and lifelong resident of Franklin who died Sept. 29, 2005 at the age of 98.
Mr. Hansen’s twin careers consisted of fighting fires and running Otto’s Place, restaurant and bar on Franklin Boulevard, forerunner of the present CJs in Franklin.
He began his fire fighting career as a volunteer and was hired in 1934 as assistant chief with Franklin as “his” district, a position he held for 55 years. Former Elk Grove Fire Chief Gerald Derr recalled him as “one fine great guy. He was always happy and good-natured.
“We had standing orders at the Elk Grove station that if we reached Franklin Boulevard and saw Otto coming, we let him go first because he drove so fast,” Derr recalled with a chuckle.
The Franklin fire station, Station 72 at Franklin and Hood-Franklin roads, has been moved to 10035 Atkins Drive near Franklin High School, and will be rededicated as the Otto Hansen Station on Saturday, Oct. 15. Elk Grove Community Services District officials invite the public to the ceremonies from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
In 1910 Arche Gilliam opened Archie’s Place, a saloon where CJs now stands, and after finishing school, Mr. Hansen went to work for him. During Prohibition, Archie’s was moved down the street and operated ostensibly as an ice cream parlor. After Mr. Gilliam’s death in 1936, Mr. Hansen ran the place for his wife, eventually buying it from her and moving it back to to its original location.
The Hansens served food along with the bar, and former supervisor and Franklin resident Toby  Johnson remembers Stella Christesen Hansen as being an excellent cook. The couple were married for 61 years before her death a few years ago.
“Otto Hansen was ‘Mr. Franklin,’” said newspaper columnist Stan Gilliam, grandson of Arche.
Mr. Hansen is survived by his children Robert Hansen of Concord, Beverly Knuepel of Alturas and Monty Hansen of Galt; grandchildren Cindy, Cheryle, Kathy, Greg, Steven and Stephanie; great-grandchildren Otto, Josh, Travis, Derrick, Dillon, Haley, Maci, Hunter, Clint, Kurt, Casey and Scott; and great-great-grandchild Hunter.
