Alice Smith
Alice Flora Smith, who taught piano, violin and guitar in her home music school in Elk Grove for many years, died July 10, 2007 at the age of 95.
Music was her first love, and she taught it for 50 years, including from 1973 to 1985 in Elk Grove. She also participated in bands at the California State Fair on the main stage for several years.
Mrs. Smith attended Full Gospel Community Church in Elk Grove for approximately 20 years, and granddaughter Veronica Pace remembers attending tent meetings with her at the church.
She was born May 22, 1912 in Montpelier, Vt. to Daniel Byron Clark and Alice Ada (Wimbush) Clark, the oldest of four children, Byron Clark, Mollie Simpson and Gail Brown, all who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Smith graduated from Zion Bible Institute, Providence, R.I. in 1942 and married Harold Isley Elliot Smith on April 1, 1944 at Gospel Lighthouse Church in Hudson Falls, N.Y. He preceded her in death in 1987 as did her daughter Priscilla Wimbe (Smith) Kent in 1993.
In later years she went to live with her daughter Merium Alice (Smith) Lopez and husband Michael in Paradise.
Besides her daughter, Mrs. Smith is survived by grandchildren Katrina Jean (Nielson) Ramirez and Bill Lancaster, Veronica Jill (Nielson) Pace and husband Monte Eugene, Shawn Timothy Kent and wife Janette, and Patrick Allen Kent; and great-grandchildren Bonnie Jean (Pace) Croco and husband James, Amanda Eileen Pace, Heather Maureen Pace, Blake Alexander Kent, and Adrianna Marie Reyes Pace.
She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will take place Saturday, July 21 at the Paradise Church of the Nazarene.
Vada Walker
A celebration of the life of Vada Mae Walker will be held Saturday, July 21. Mrs. Walker, a former resident of Elk Grove, died July 16, 2007 in Fresno at age 89.
She lived in Elk Grove from 1961 to 1967 when her husband, Rev. Robert E. Walker was pastor of Point Pleasant United Methodist Church, and again after their retirement from 1982 to 1989 when her husband was associated with Elk Grove United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Walker was born in Buchanan, Mich. on Feb. 23, 1918, and grew up in South Bend, Ind. She met her future husband at a Christian Endeavor group in South Bend and they were married Aug. 28, 1941.
After he finished seminary, the family came to California where Rev. Walker’s first pastorate was that of chaplain for returning veterans of World War II who lived in Rodger Young Village in Griffith Park, Los Angeles. From there they served various churches throughout California including Point Pleasant.
Rev. Walker preceded her in death March 6, 2000 after 58 years of marriage.
Mrs. Walker is survived by her children Carol Allen and husband Bill of Elk Grove, Thomas Walker and wife Robin of Franklin, Ohio, Beverly Rye and husband Ron of Clovis, and Marleen Greene and husband Bob of Lemoore; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
Viewing and visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Point Pleasant United Methodist Church, 3329 Point Pleasant Road off Franklin Boulevard, followed by the service at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Point Pleasant Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made to the church’s building fund, 3329 Point Pleasant Road, Elk Grove, CA 95758.
Andrea Bowler
Funeral services will be Friday, May 18 for Andrea Justine Bowler of Elk Grove who died in a drowning accident May 11, 2007 at the age of 12.
Andrea was a student at Elitha Donner Elementary School and planned to attend Bradshaw Christian School in the fall of this year.
She was born in Lodi Feb. 10, 1995 to Mike and Lynn Bowler. She enjoyed playing the piano, kayaking, traveling with her family, trap shooting with her sister, and horseback riding.
Andrea liked to accompany her grandfather to the local coffee shops and helping her dad repair something around the house. She volunteered in the nursery at First Baptist Church of Elk Grove, and was an unofficial “volunteer” at the Elk Grove Police Department in the dispatch department where her mother works.
She is survived by her parents, Mike and Lynn Bowler; sister Shelby Bowler; and grandparents Bert and Marlene Norton all of Elk Grove.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Friday’s services begin at 10 a.m. in First Baptist Church, 8939 East Stockton Blvd. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Claudine Jackson
Elk Grove lost a well-loved citizen with the death of Claudine Jackson on Nov. 21, 2006.
Mrs. Jackson was born May 2, 1930 in Sacramento to William and Lena Bordisso. Her family has owned and operated The Old Ironsides, bar and restaurant in Sacramento since 1934, and Mrs. Jackson grew up in Sacramento, graduating from McClatchy High School. She worked at Zamn’s Candy Shop adjacent to the Tower Theatre and attended Sacramento City College.
Claudine Bordisso and John Jackson were married in 1949, and she worked as a Kelly Girl while he ran the family dairy at Mack Road and Stockton Boulevard.
Later, he pursued masonry construction and the two worked hard to enhance the growing business, John Jackson Masonry, which has grown considerably with the area.
Mrs. Jackson was a devout Catholic and volunteered in many Catholic charities, becoming a lifetime member of the Mercy Guild Society. She was a founding member of the Cosumnes River College Patrons Club, and a member of the Red Hat Society.
In later years the Jacksons traveled the world, touring Europe, Asia, South America and Australia, often taking their family with them. They enjoyed viewing the world through their grandchildren’s eyes; the churches of Europe, the outback of Australia and the Great Barrier Reef, pre-Columbian ruins in Costa Rica, ports of the Baltic, boating on the glacial lakes of Chile and visiting most of the major cities in the United States.
Her family said she was an accomplished cook and an unabashed fashion maven. “Even into their 40s she would ask her daughters, ‘are you going to wear that?’ ‘Are you going to leave that gray in your hair?’ ‘Don’t you think that black pumps would go better with that outfit?’”
“She listened to people with genuine interest and never dismissed their perspective,” said her daughter. “She was a role model for how to treat others.”
Mrs. Jackson is survived by her husband John; children John Jackson and wife Lynda, Francine Masters and husband Bill and Renee Malaki and husband Mike; and six grandchildren, Jessica, Celia, John, Meghan, Alexander and Ellen.
She was the sister of Billie Jean Kanelos.
Services were held Saturday at Holy Spirit Church with interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Christian Brothers High School William Bordisso Scholarship Fund, or Isabel Jackson Scholarship Fund at Elk Grove Community Foundation.
Albert Truttman
A Mass of Christian burial will take place Friday, Dec. 1 for Albert E. (Kobi) Truttman, a longtime resident of Elk Grove who died Nov. 23, 2006 at the age of 86.
He was born Sept. 15, 1920 and made his living as a dairy farmer and later in a dump trucking business. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Truttman was a lover of Swiss music and festivities and was a member of the San Joaquin Valley Swiss Club. He and his wife of 38 years Josephine (Joby) enjoyed summers with the grandchildren, traveling the United States in their RV and dancing to Swiss music.
She preceded him in death as did his stepdaughter Katherine Vogel.
Mr. Truttman is survived by his daughter Theresa (Susie) Bivens and sister Elizabeth Knepple both of Elk Grove; stepson Russell Mueller of Citrus Heights; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 at South East Lawn, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove, and Friday’s services will begin at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Road. Entombment is private.
Glen Prater
Glen Prater, who almost made it to the century mark, died Nov. 20, 2006 at the age of 99.
Mr. Prater was born Feb. 28, 1907 in Iberia, Mo. where he grew up, later becoming a wheat farmer in Kansas and then Colorado.
In 1942 he moved to Richmond, Calif. and worked at the Kaiser shipyard, on the Liberty ship. The family went to Yuba City in the early 1950s.
Mr. Prater retired in 1972 as operating engineer for Baldwin Contracting Co. About five years ago he came to Elk Grove where most of the family was living.
The love of farming stayed with him, and a hobby was growing tomatoes. He would start plants from seeds and give them to his family. Another interest was fishing.
Mr. Prater was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma, and his stepson, James Loughridge.
He is survived by his son Truman Prater and wife Janice of Elk Grove; grandchildren Bryan Prater, Brad Prater and Julie King and husband Dave all of Elk Grove, James Loughridge and wife Cathy of Vacaville and Bruce Loughridge and wife Alice of Vallejo; daughter-in-law Nora Loughridge; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of Emma Faldtz of Lincoln, Neb.
The family expressed their appreciation to Mr. Prater’s caregivers at Elk Grove Guest Home and Sutter VNA and Hospice.
Graveside services were held Nov. 27 at Sutter Cemetery
in Sutter City.
