James Mendonca
Private graveside services will take place Friday, Nov. 19 for James Morris Mendonca, 65, a native and longtime resident of this area, who died Nov. 13, 2004 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.
Mr. Mendonca was born Sept. 1, 1939 in Lodi. He grew up in Thornton and Galt where he attended local schools and with his father, William was active with the Boy Scouts.
He served his country with the U.S. Coast Guard for 21 years, including a tour in Vietnam in 1965-1966. Following that, he and his family returned to this area.
Mr. Mendonca was preceded in death by his father, William Mendonca in 1981.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years Lynda; his daughters, Renee Mendonca-Millard and husband Scott, and Tina Long and husband Don; and his granddaughter Jacqulynn Millard all of Wilton; and his mother Clara Mendonca of Galt.
Mr. Mendonca was the brother of Hazel Read and husband Bob of Sacramento and Luana Manning of San Diego. Six nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews also survive him.

Arlene Slater
Arlene B. Slater, the first woman president of the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce, died Tuesday, Nov. 9 in her home in Sierra Vista, Ariz., following an illness of many years. She was 75.
Mrs. Slater presided over the Chamber in 1978 and growth in the area was a factor even then. "Some feel the town is growing too fast, others that its growth is long overdue," she said. "Progress is not a villain, it's how it is handled that is important."
The town was facing a $1 million insurance bill for any event held in Elk Grove Regional Park, and Mrs. Slater and her board worked hard to reduce that. She often stated she was most proud of that accomplishment in her term.
She and her board also initiated the Chamber Service Award, given annually to a member or couple who have contributed significantly to the Chamber but who are not currently serving as an officer or member of the board of directors.
Seven years after her term of office, in 1985, her husband, Dick Slater was elected as president of the Chamber.
Mrs. Slater was born Aug. 4, 1929 in Spokane, Wash. where she grew up. She and Dick were married Dec. 7, 1944, and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. She often referred to him as her best friend.
The couple came to Elk Grove in the mid 1960s where he took a teaching job, first at McClatchy High School, then at Sacramento City College. Later they opened a real estate company in Elk Grove, Land Mark Realty.
In 1971 Mrs. Slater became the owner-manager of Diversified Learning Systems which provided programs to schools in the form of kits in electronics, mathematics and digital electronics.
She was active in several volunteer organizations in Elk Grove, including the Western Festival board, Elk Grove Historical Society, Elk Grove Republican Women, Soroptimist International of Elk Grove and Elk Grove Newcomers.
The couple retired in the early 1990s and moved to Sierra Vista, however, managed to stay in touch with many Elk Grove friends.
"Arlene was a lady in the true sense of the word," said friend Mary Lewis. "She was always gracious and sweet in her dealings with people, and at the same time exercised strong leadership in both business and the organizations she belonged to."
Besides her husband, Mrs. Slater is survived by two daughters, Sharon Agee of California and Sally Slater of Sierra Vista; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of Lyle DeVore of Green Valley, Ariz. and Vincent DeVore of Yakima, Wash.

Joan M. Abley
Joan Monson Abley, 71, died Nov. 21, 2004 at her home in Galt.
She was born in Isle, Minn., and moved to Sacramento with her family at age 5. She graduated from Sacramento High School in 1951, and was employed by the County of Sacramento until her marriage to Barth G. Abley on June 8, 1957. They made their home in Rancho Cordova, moving to Mountain View in 1965. The couple moved to Galt in 1999.
Joan enjoyed current events and politics, raising her three sons, baking cookies, and was an avid San Francisco 49er and Giants fan.
Surviving her are three sons, Brad M. Abley of San Jose, Paul Abley of Pittsburg and Greg Abley of Mountain View; and a sister, Peggy Stetson of Galt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Barth G. Abley, on July 14, 1999; four siblings, Robert Monson, Judy Monson-Platt, Billy Monson and Caroline Monson.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 29, at Galt Funeral Home with interment following at the Galt Cemetery.
Ruby Callander
Ruby Parks Callander, one of the mainstays in establishing the Senior Center of Elk Grove, died April 13, 2005 at the age of 87.
Mrs. Callander was born July 16, 1917 at Cowles, Neb. to Alta Andersen Parks and Horace (Babe) Parks. She grew up in Nebraska, graduating with honors from Hastings High School in 1936.
She and Lawrence (Larry) Callander were married in 1937 in North Platte, Neb. They worked in and owned a restaurant, moving to southern California in 1954. She retired as a foreman for Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Downey in 1972.
Following her retirement the couple moved to Elk Grove, where both became involved in the construction and running of the Senior Center, volunteering much of their time there. Larry Callander died in May 1995.
Mrs. Callander was affiliated with several other organizations, including Elk Grove Newcomers & Friends, Senior Citizen Auxiliary and Neighborhood Watch.
She is survived by her children Gordon Callander and wife Gladys of Elk Grove, Ruby Kaye Kelley and husband Richard of Alhambra and Marilyn Meadows and husband Stan of Forbestown; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Callander was the sister of Iva Schroeder of Elm Creek, Neb. and Ilene Spahr of Grand Island, Neb.
Memorial services were held April 19 at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tom Norvell officiating.
Edna Allison
Funeral services will take place today for Edna Allison, a 50-year resident of the Elk Grove area who died April 18, 2005 at the age of 82.
Mrs. Allison was born Dec. 7, 1922 in Lawton, Okla. to Letha and Arthur Johnson. She graduated from high school there and then attended Cameron College where she met Sgt. Joseph E. Allison who was stationed at Fort Sill. They were married in November 1942.
Following World War II they moved to southern California, then Sacramento, and in 1955 built a home in the Sheldon area of Elk Grove.
Mrs. Allison retired from Campbell Soup Company in 1986 after 36 years, where she worked in employee benefits. She enjoyed the Campbell Soup bowling league, trout fishing, reading, puttering in her garden, cheering for the Sacramento Kings and spending time with her family.
A good deal of her time was taken up as caregiver for her mother in her later years, and her husband in his battle with cancer.
Mrs. Allison was preceded in death by her husband Joe Allison; sisters Marie Ponder, Martha Cole and Neoma Harper; brothers Benny Johnson and George Melton; grandson Jeffrey Lewis Conner; and great-granddaughter Andrea Conner.
She is survived by daughter Neva Allison Conner; son Ronald Allison and wife Margaret; grandchildren Charles and Christi Allison and Patrick Conner and wife Angela; great-grandchildren Patrick and Amanda Conner; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Allison was the sister of Syble Reynolds of Pahrump, Nev., Weynema Stockman of Hemet, Novella Wilkerson of Stockton and Erwin Johnson of Lawton.
Today’s services begin at 2 p.m. at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Viewing starts at 10 a.m.
Bob Hosmann
Bob Hosmann, long time resident of Elk Grove, passed away suddenly on July 18, 2006. Born and raised in Sacramento, Bob moved to Elk Grove with his wife and family in 1979. He had just celebrated his 61st birthday.
Bob was a long time member of Elk Grove Congregational Church and an active supporter of Boy Scout Troop 288. He held many positions in the scouting family and took all three of his boys through the program. He also was Scoutmaster for the National Jamboree in 1989, National Jamboree Contingency Leader in 1993, and was on staff for the 1997 Jamboree.
Bob recently retired from The Sacramento Bee after 40 years of service. He was working on building a 1952 Chevy hardtop hotrod in his spare time.
Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Kay; children, Lisa and Randy Guttridge, Michael and Cory Hosmann, Ted Hosmann, Bill Hosmann and Staci Miles; grandchildren, James, Katelyn, Spencer and Brodie.
Services are being held Saturday, July 22, at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Congregational Church, 2700 L Street in Sacramento.
