Velma King
Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 22 for Velma B. King, co-founder of King’s Roller Rink almost 60 years ago, who died Feb. 14, 2007 at the age of 97.
Roller skating and the name of King have been synonymous in Elk Grove for almost 60 years. Mrs. King and her husband Lester opened King’s Roller Rink in Franklin in December 1948, and later opened a branch in Sacramento, King’s Skate Country. Many issues of the Elk Grove Citizen have chronicled skating parties at King’s, including birthdays and others.
Her family said she enjoyed watching the different generations come to the rink and had a special connection with the children of her customers. “It didn’t matter your age, she would ask you to spit out your gum when you came in,” said her son. “And she could surprise some by telling them ‘I know your father and I will call him if I need to.’”
Mrs. King was born Sept. 24, 1909 to Elzie and Katie Bailey and grew up on the family farm in Topeka, Kansas. The King family moved to Topeka and met the Baileys when Lester and his mother came to the farm to buy milk.
Lester and Velma began dating while attending Seaman High School. Velma graduated in 1928 and went to work for Fidelity Savings Bank. It was about the time the Great Depression hit, and Lester followed his brother to Los Angeles to find work. He returned in October 1931 to collect his family and marry Velma Bailey on Oct. 15, 1931.
After a large earthquake in Los Angeles in 1933, the couple joined their family to work crops in Northern California and settled in Thornton, following the harvest in asparagus, peaches, cherries, apricots, pears and others. Later they moved to Franklin where they built their home.
When Lester King was a child his family owned a hotel and he remembered children skating in the basement. Mrs. King believed the image of happy children whizzing by on their skates stuck with him and prompted him to build a skating facility. They bought land from Otto Hanson to build the rink and opened in December 1948.
Lester King died April 12, 1964, but Velma King stayed on working at the rink, even when she was past 80 and her family asked her if she wouldn’t like to retire. She declined and continued to work until a stroke slowed her down in 1995. She was also an active member of the Royal Neighbors of America for many years.
In November 2001, the Elk Grove Community Services District honored both Velma and Lester King by dedicating a park to them.
Besides her husband, Mrs. King was preceded in death by her sisters Nellie Lipelt and Venita Applegate.
She is survived by her children Darlene Hathcock and husband Don of Arkansas and Dan King and wife Jeanette of Sacramento; and grandchildren Tim King and wife Sherri of Elk Grove, Paul King and wife Christy of Shingle Springs, Ron Hathcock, Lisa Clemens and husband Warren, Robin Mitchell and husband David, and Jim Hathcock and wife Veronica all of Arkansas.
Mrs. King was the great-grandmother of Austin, Bailey, Dalton, Danielle, Amber, Bridget, Cody, Dakotah, Wacey and Montse; great-great-grandmother of Wesley and Brock; and aunt of Vickie Applegate-Hervey.

In August 1959 he married Rosann. She survives him as do his daughter Staci Bettis and husband Jimmy; grandsons David and Dylan all of Elk Grove; and sister Donna Green.
