Audrey Mathisen
Funeral services will take place Saturday, Aug. 19 for Audrey Virginia Mathisen, a 17-year resident of Elk Grove who died Aug. 9, 2006 at the age of 90.
She was born May 21, 1916 in Danville to Edna and Andrew Asmussen and grew up in Hayward where she met and married Leroy (Roy) C. Mathisen. He preceded her in death in 1981, and in 1989 she moved to Elk Grove to be near her daughter.
In Elk Grove she enjoyed the Senior Center and her card-playing friends. Mrs. Mathisen also enjoyed traveling and sports, especially the Oakland A’s, and watching local baseball.
She is survived by her daughter Lynn C. Patty and husband Obed; grandson Keven W. Patty and wife Lisa; granddaughter Maren L. Quackenbush and husband Mike; and great-grandson Kale A. Quackenbush and fiancé Diana Berania.
Saturday’s services will begin at 2 p.m. at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Remembrances may be made to the S.P.C.A., 6201 Florin-Perkins Rd., Sacramento, CA 95828; or the Senior Center of Elk Grove, 8830 Sharkey Ave., Elk Grove, CA 95624.
Robert Benson
Memorial services will be today, Wednesday for Robert L. Benson of Elk Grove who died Aug. 10, 2006 in Sacramento.
Mr. Benson, 78, was a native of Long Beach. He was the head inspector for numerous California state buildings and the Area II supervisor and advisor for the Office of the California State Architect, retiring after 35 years.
He was a member of the California Inspection Association and the C.S.E.A.
Mr. Benson is survived by his wife of 54 years Faye Benson; sons Robert Benson of Elk Grove and Bill Benson of San Pablo; and granddaughter Rebecca Benson of Stockton.
He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law Christine Benson.
Today’s services begin at 10 a.m. in the chapel of South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd. Remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Arthur Camacho
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 17 for Arthur R. Camacho of Elk Grove who died Aug. 10, 2006 at the age of 63.
Mr. Camacho was born in Huntington Park and had lived in Elk Grove for the past 27 years. He was preceded in death by brothers Joe and Ray Camacho.
Mr. Camacho is survived by his wife of 40 years Evelyn Camacho; children Tiffany Koroush, Artie Camacho and Gina Camacho-Ziomek; and grandchildren Kayla, Ryan and Felicia.
He was the son of Arturo Camacho and wife Carmen and Lucy Alvarez and husband Jess; and brother of Josie Caravayo, Richard Camacho, Alice Camacho, Patty Miller, Danny Alvarez, Bobby Camacho and Ruben Camacho.
Visitation is today (Wednesday) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd., with the vigil beginning at 6:30 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Road.
Thursday’s Mass begins at 11 a.m. in the church followed by interment in Elk Grove Cemetery.
Ron Rader
Ron Rader, a 23-year resident of Wilton, died at his home Aug. 16, 2006 after a short battle with cancer.
Mr. Rader was born Feb. 2, 1948 in Yakima, Wash. to Raymond and Betty Rader. The family moved to Sacramento when Ron was 14 and he attended Elk Grove High School where he played football, ran track and was a member of the swim team. He lived in Elk Grove for about 12 years before moving to Wilton.
A member of the Quapaw tribe of Oklahoma, Mr. Rader took great pride in his Native American ancestry. His sons participated in the Title IV program for Native American children, and as a part of the program he taught the children to make powwow regalia and the etiquette to participate in the dances. From 1989 to 2002 he worked evenings after his regular job with Sacramento Urban Indian Health Project Incorporate in their youth alcohol and drug abuse prevention program.
After leaving SUIHPI in 2002, he continued his work with the children. His family said one of his greatest sources of pride was the southern powwow drum, Southern Brothers, which is composed of children and adults with whom he worked.
A traditional Northern style dancer, Mr. Rader was called upon to be headman, arena director and master of ceremonies for local powwows. Part of his tradition included erecting an Inipi sweat lodge (church) for the people on his ranch.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Phil, who was killed in action in Vietnam in May 1970.
Mr. Rader is survived by his wife of 35 years Pam (Drewes) Rader of Wilton; sons Joseph Rader and wife Dominique Facile of Cambridge, Mass., and David Rader and wife Erin of Wilton; and grandson Micheal Rader of Wilton.
He was the brother of John of Quapaw, Okla., and Marie of Sacramento.

Bonnie Gray
Memorial services are being held this morning (Friday) for Bonnie Jean Gray, a former longtime resident of Elk Grove who died Aug. 28, 2006 following a six-year illness.
Mrs. Gray was born Jan. 19, 1931 in Great Falls, Mont. to Clarence and Verna Weaver. She grew up there and in Elk Grove, graduating from Elk Grove High School. She then attended Sacramento City College and graduated from Federico Beauty College.
Mrs. Gray volunteered for many community activities, including Brownies, 4-H, Boy Scout leader, Job’s Daughters and the Elk Grove Democratic Club. She was a volunteer driver for the Elk Grove Unified School District’s special education children, and, known for her paintings, belonged to several art clubs.
For several years she operated her own beauty shop on Elk Grove Boulevard that her husband built for her. However, arthritis and other health problems ended her career as a beautician, and she and her husband retired to northern Oregon where they spent 15 years helping to raise their grandchildren Shannon and Ryan.
Mrs. Gray was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Boyd; son Dale; and her parents.
She is survived by her daughter Robin of Placerville with whom she lived for the last four years, and oldest son Danny; oldest sister Shirley, twin sister Betty, sister Mary Joyce and brother Robert.
Today’s services begin at 10 a.m. at Memorial Chapel, 675 Bee Street, Placerville.
Keith Taft
Memorial services will be held Monday, Sept. 4 for Keith G. Taft of Elk Grove who died Aug. 28, 2006 at the age of 72.
Mr. Taft was born in Montana and had lived in Elk Grove for the past 16 years.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Taft; children Marty Taft and wife Rosie, Renee Meloche and husband Tom and Jody Cunningham and husband Scott; grandchildren Keith and wife Lisa, Amber, Dana, Alex, Nicholas, Laura Jane and Bethany.
Mr. Taft was the brother of Ted Taft and wife Myrna.
Monday’s services begin at 10 a.m. in Vintage Park Church, 8220 Elk Grove-Florin Road. Interment is private.
Arrangements are by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.
Robert Haberern
Graveside services will take place Saturday, Sept. 23 for Robert W. Haberern who died Sept. 15, 2006 in Rancho Murieta at the age of 61.
Mr. Haberern was born in Stamford, Conn. to John and Marguerite Haberern. He served in the U.S. Army and was a computer consultant for 30 years until ill health forced his retirement. His interests included golf, ham radios and computers.
Mr. Haberern is survived by his wife of 21 years, Teresa Haberern. He was the father of Kade Haberern and brother of Michael Haberern of southern California, Elizabeth Haberern of Connecticut and John Haberern and wife Denise of South Carolina. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Visitation is Friday, Sept. 22 from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 23 from 9 to 10:45 a.m. in South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in South East Lawn Memorial Park.
Jack Costa
Jack Howells Costa, a longtime resident of Wilton, died Sept. 13, 2006 at the age of 71.
Mr. Costa was born in Colorado Springs, Colo. and had lived in Wilton for the past 50 years. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, the Masonic Lodge and the S.E.S.
He is survived by his wife Mary Costa of Wilton; and daughter Jeri Barnes, husband Randy and daughter Kaci all of Herald.
Mr. Costa was the uncle of Dawn Costella, Tony Costella and Curtis and Kyle Costella all of Galt.
Services were held Monday in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel. Inurnment was private.
Col. E.H. Wolff
Retired Col. E.H. (Manny) Wolff, a former longtime resident of Elk Grove, died Oct. 12, 2006 at Paradise Valley Estates in Fairfield. The Air Force aviator flew in three wars, earning 23 decorations, 17 in combat.
Col. Wolff was awarded the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, the Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service, Air Force and Army Commendation Medals, plus numerous campaign ribbons during his 33 years of service.
He was born Jan. 29, 1917 in Forbes, N.D. and grew up there and in Sacramento.
Col. Wolff flew B-25s in the Pacific during World War II. He also served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He was an instructor at the U.S. Air Force Academy as part of the initial cadre and also served as liaison officer to the United Nations Command in Korea.
Following retirement, he moved to Elk Grove in 1973 where he was associated with a foothills winery, served as the Elk Grove Adult Education Community Garden coordinator, and was a member of the Rhoads School board.
He belonged to the Air Force Association, Retired Officers Association, Quiet Birdmen, Disabled American Veterans and the Elk Grove Historical Society.
Col. Wolff was preceded in death by his wife, Ita.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Wolff of San Diego; son Brigadier General Terry A. Wolff and granddaughter Maria Winkler Wolff of McLean, Va.; and granddaughter Erin Winkler Wolff of Washington, D.C.
Col. Wolff was the brother of Leah Schmidt, Edna Schmidt and Leona Utterback all of Northern California, and Esther Clouse of Louisiana.
