Graveside services for Mary Fuentes Rodriguez will be held Thursday, October 10, 2002, 10:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday, 4-8 p.m., at Hillcrest Mortuary.
Mary was born on November 25, 1925 in Las Cruces, NM, to Ceilia Fuentes and Santiago Pena. She has resided in Bakersfield for the last 12 years and was a member of the Primer Iglesia Bautista. She was last employed at Modern Faucet as a machine operator.
She is predeceased by her parents Cecilia and Santiago. Mary is survived by her daughter, Geraldine Rodriguez of Nampa, Idaho; sons, Johnny Duarte of Tennessee and Miguel Portillo of Los Angeles; sisters, Sarah Beltran and Josephine Romero of Bakersfield; brother, Ramon F. Loya of Bakersfield; and nine grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be James Salazar, Mario Ambriz, Jr., Juan Sanchez, Jr., Rudy Ramirez, Edward Vega, Jr., Cipriano Hill, Jr.

Richard R. Blackhurst
1926 - 2002
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 11, at 10:00 a.m. for Richard R. Blackhurst, in the chapel at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary. Richard was born on November 27, 1926, in Los Angeles. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and fought for his country in WWII. He worked for Graybar Electric in Los Angeles after the Navy, where he met the love of his life, Patricia. Richard had a natural gift for music and became involved in barbershop quartet singing. He was a member of the quartet that won the Far Western States District Championship in 1952.
Richard and Patricia married in 1953 and moved to Bakersfield in 1958. Richard went to work for Kern County as an Auditor Appraiser for the Assessors office and was there for 25 years until his retirement in 1992.
Richard continued his involvement in barbershop quartet singing throughout his life. He also found time to act in local theater productions for the Melodrama and BCT where he showcased another natural gift, acting. His children came first though and he always made time for their activities. Richard had a love of the outdoors and family outings included regular forays to National Parks and the Sierra Nevada where he taught his children to fish and camp.
Richard continued to stay active after his retirement. He became a volunteer and worked at local elections, bound books for the Kern County Library and served at the information desk in the Kern County Administration Center. He joined the local Orchid Society. Richard was a regular at the school activities and sporting events of his grandchildren and regularly donated to local music and sports programs.
He lived a long full life. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; a daughter, Linda; and four sons, David, Paul, Peter and Timothy; daughter-in-law, Stephanie; grandchildren, Dawn, April, Jeremy, Tanya, Nia, Zachary, Whitney, Samuel; great-grandchildren, Jeffry, Kayla, Alex, Trinity, Dakota, Brandon and Cameron. They all miss him dearly.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the care provided by Dr. Vega and the nursing staff in ICU at San Joaquin Hospital. In lieu of flowers, Richard requested that donations be made to the Salvation Army.
No visitation is scheduled.

Brenda L. Stinson
May 21, 1962 - October 3, 2002
God chose to take one of His angels home to His eternal rose garden.
Church services will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at 11:00 a.m., at Columbus Street Baptist Church, 714 Columbus St. Graveside services will follow immediately at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Brenda was born in Fort Belvior, Virginia and passed away in Bakersfield, CA from a sudden heart attack. She was preceded in death by her mother, Linda Bearden in March 1988. She is survived by her husband, Timothy; daughter, Amber Dawn and son, Bryan Joseph. She is also survived by her father and stepmother, Donald and Pat Bearden, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
In her short life, Brenda touched the lives and hearts of many. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Ron E. Darapiza
Services: Thurs., Oct. 10, 10 a.m.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, at 10:00 a.m., at Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 928 17th St., for Ron E. Darapiza, who passed away October 7, 2002 in Bakersfield. A graveside service will follow at Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery.
Ron was born November 7, 1957, in Bakersfield, to parents Tommy and Betty Darapiza. He is survived by his wife, Diane, 42; children, Ty, 20, Adrienne, 19, Tanya, 17, and Jordan, 8; brothers, Thomas of Florida and Greg of Ventura; sisters, Barbara Wade of Ventura, Valerie Montes of Belton, MO, Lori Yap of Santa Maria and Norma Phlum of Oregon.
Visitation will be Wed., from 6-8 p.m., at Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara.

Edna Schafer Willems
3/1/1909 - 10/5/2002
Peters Funeral Home will conduct a Graveside service at Shafter Memorial Park on Thursday, October 10, at 10 a.m., followed by a Memorial service, at 11 a.m., at the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church in Shafter, for Edna Schafer Willems, age 93, who passed away October 5, 2002, in Bakersfield. Pastor Pat Coyle of the Mennonite Brethren Church will officiate at the services. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 9, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday, October 10, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Edna was born on March 1, 1909, to George and Johanna Schafer, in McClusky, North Dakota. Edna graduated in 1933 from Nurse Training at Bismarck, North Dakota. She earned her AA degree from Tabor College at Hillsboro, Kansas in 1937. Edna married Arthur Willems in Johns Lake Mennonite Brethren Church, North Dakota on August 16, 1942. The couple had 1 child, Judith Ann who lives in Bakersfield. Edna continued in her vocation of nursing, but only on a part-time basis after her marriage. She was also very active in her church as a Sunday school teacher and in the Shafter Community Bible Study.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, who passed away in 1987. She is survived by her daughter, Judith; brothers, Herman Schafer of Harvey, North Dakota, Ernest and wife, Elma Schafer of Bismarck, North Dakota; sisters, Laura and husband, Frank Martens of Shafter, Elsie and husband Ernest Friesen of Wichita, Kansas; sister-in-law, Ruby  Schmidt of Reedley, CA; and many other loving family members. Edna was an exceptional woman, who loved her family and had a very giving nature.

Gretta Jeanne Bynum Gobel
Aug. 27, 1935 - Oct. 5, 2002
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 10 at Garden of Memories, Hillcrest Memorial Park. Jeanne was born in Tishamingo, OK. And moved to California in 1937. She attended Beardsley Grammar School and Bakersfield High School. She worked as a waitress for many years and retired as a customer service representative from Aarons Home Center.
Jeanne is predeceased by her parents, Joe and Laura Bynum; her sisters, Leona Richards, Beatrice Minnick and Bena Leonard.
She is survived by her children: Kim  Johnson and husband, Larry, Anna Thomas, Kenneth Cox and wife, Delynn, Robert Gautney and wife, Deanna and her honorary daughter, Jody Barrie; her grandchildren: Chris Macom, Shelli Howard, Angela Musick, Nickolas Thomas, Karen Cox, Ricky and Krystal Swann-Johnson, Bryn and Nicklaus Gautney, Shantel, Stephan and Sydni Stovall; great-grandchildren: Michael, David and Hannah Musick, Devon, Austin and C.J. Macom, and Ashley Howard; sisters: Sharon Bynum Seaward, Gail Hawthorne and husband, Gene, Wanda Pierce and husband, Roy, Melba Van Winkle and husband, John and Lola Bynum; brothers: Art Bynum and wife, Brenda, Murle Bynum and wife, Becky, Ray Bynum and wife, Margaret; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Jeannes grand passion in life were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We will always remember you when we see flowers bloom, may you rest in peace in your beautiful new garden.

Curtis D. Moore
Memorial services will be held at Christs Church of the Valley, 13701 Stockdale Highway.
Curtis was born in Turkey,  Texas, on May 19, 1923. He passed from this life on October 6, 2002, at the age of 79. He was loved by his wife, Darline Moore, of 55 years; his children, Stephen Moore, Adina Somers, David Moore and their spouses; his 9 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. He leaves 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
Curtis lived in Bakersfield for the past 35 years and retired as Minister of the Ming Avenue Christian Church, in 1989, after 22 years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Prayer Garden at Christs Church, or to Optimal Hospice.

Thelma E. Young
11/6/1920 - 10/3/2002
Thelma passed away on October 3 at the age of 81 in Los Angeles. She was born on November 6, 1920 in Fremont, Missouri to Charles and Leona Legg. As a young girl she moved with her family to California, residing in Kern County for over 70 years. She graduated from Kern Union High School in 1938 and Lufkins Business College in 1939. Thelma worked for Brown Brothers Insurance Co. in the 1940s and was proud of the fact that she was the first female insurance adjuster in California.
Thelma married the love of her life, John Young, in 1946 and they shared 55 happy years together; he predeceased her in 2001. John owned and operated Valley Auto & Truck Wrecking for 35 years and they resided in Bakersfield for many years before retiring to Lake Isabella in 1976. She was a very special lady who will be remembered as a compassionate and loving woman whose life was devoted to her family and husband, John.
Thelma is survived by son Mark Young and his wife Georgia of Stockton; daughter Janis Hulsey and her husband Rick of Bakersfield; daughter Judie Sager and her husband Bill of Rosarito, Mexico; a very special niece, Candace DeFusco and her husband Ronnie of Las Vegas; grandchildren Craig Young, Amy DeGrandi, Ryan Young, Scott Hulsey, Chad Hulsey, Tammye Erdmann and Mark Russom; five great and two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Mary Legg; and nieces Debbie Bryson, Kye Mann and Randy Carrell. She was predeceased by her brother, Lawrence Legg.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no services. Cremation and interment will be at Greenlawn.

Fred J. Moore, SFC Ret
12/12/1928 - 10/5/2002
Fred J. Moore, born December 12, 1928, in Tulelake, CA and died in Bakersfield, CA, October 5, 2002, with his wife Ida and daughters by his side.
Fred is peceded in death by his mother and father, Josephine and Clyde Moore, brother, Robert Moore, sister, Marguerite Freed and his wife, Beebe N. Moore. He is survived by his wife, Ida Moore; son, Jim Moore and wife, Chris; daughters, Mary Provencio, Carolyn Vlahos and husband, Mike, and Kelli Navarre. Grandchildren, Sarah and Matthew Provencio, Jason and Joshua Alvidrez, Jordan, Justin, and John Vlahos, Katie and Shawn Moore. Also survived by one brother, Richard Moore and sister, Lillian Thompson; special friend who was like a son, Kenny DuBois; niece, Allison Ryan and sons, Declan, Ian, and Patrick Ryan.
Fred joined the U.S. Army in 1946 and retired after 23 years of service. He served in the Korean War in 2 campaigns and once in Vietnam. After retiring, he settled in Bakersfield with wife, Beebe and his 3 children. He returned to work 3 months later for Kern County Sheriffs Department. After a couple of years of retirement, Fred started his own business, Fred Moore Pilot Car Service, which he operated with his wife Ida Moore until his recent illness.
Fred was actively involved with the 82nd Airborne, proud member of Korean War Veterans Association, 2nd Infantry Division CA Branch, American Legion and various other military organizations. Fred was proud to have served his country for 23 years and would have served again if called upon to cook for the Troops.
He was loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed by the people whose lives he touched. Special thanks to Dr. Hemmal Kothary, Dr. Raj Patel, their staff and the staff of Optimal Hospice and the Nurses from MMHH.
Memorial services on Saturday, October 12, 2002, at 12:00, Autumn Oaks Funeral Home, 4030 Wible Rd. Military graveside rites will be held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella, CA.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 10 and Friday, October 11, noon to 8:00 p.m. at Autumn Oaks Funeral Home.
