William H. West

We are saddened to announce the passing of our dear William "Bill" West. He was at home surrounded by family when he succumbed to metastatic cancer. Finally at peace, Bill will be remembered for his kind and friendly nature.
Bill was born in Modesto and raised in Ceres California. After graduating Turlock High, Bill spent 4 years in Europe with the U.S. Army as a decryption specialist. He then worked in L.A., San Francisco and Lompoc before moving to Salinas. His business career settled in gaming sales, where he gained the nickname "Bingo Bill". He was later owner and operator of West Promotions. His businesses included the Broadway Star Café and The Bingo Shoppe located in Broadway Bingo for the past 24 years.
Bill was always excited to travel. Happily, over the years, he was able to visit much of the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Middle East, S. America and China.
He was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Edna West, and his brother Jerry.
Bill is survived by his wife Jill Ann (nee McNair), his son Xavier, daughter Michelle and grandson Ethan all of Salinas. His daughter by marriage Wendi (Dan) Post of Springfield, Oregon. Bill also leaves his sister Johanna (Victor) Morrison of Ceres and brother Alan (Betty) of Modesto.
The placement of his ashes will take place at 12:30p on Monday, October 12, 2015 at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas. Friends are invited to a remembrance gathering at 1:30p to be held at Broadway Bingo, 19 W. Bernal Dr., Salinas.

Sonya K. Swick
November 28, 1940 - September 27, 2015

Sonya K. Swick age 74 of Salinas passed away Sunday, September 27, 2015, in her home following her illness with cancer. She was born November 28, 1940 in Shelbyville, Indiana. Her father was Willard R. Swick and her mother Rosamond F. Handly.
She attended at Coulston Elementary School. She traveled around with her military father and settled in Salinas California in 1956. Sonya graduated from Salinas High School Class of 1959 and received her Bachelor's degree from San Jose State University in 1969.
She was a teacher's aide at El Gabilan Elementary School for 20 years working with special education classes. She was member of AAUW (American Association University Women), United Methodist Women, and held various positions for her church. She was part of Women's club, Monterey Reads program, delivering food for Meals on Wheels, visiting home bound members of her church and feeding people at Dorothy' place.
She was an active member and volunteer of AFS (American Field Service Intercultural Programs) and hosted various international students from Asia in her home. Years after, her AFS family expanded with 3 grandchildren. They remember her as: strong, loving, encouraging, a fighter, independent, impressive, steadfast, benevolent, caring, and determined. Her family will miss Sonya but they take comfort knowing she is at peace and reunited with her parents and grandma once more.
Over the years she was able to travel with friends and Cousin Nancy to Africa, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong and went on 2 missions to Philippines in 2009 and 2011 for her church.
Sonya was preceded in death by grandmother Nellie Swick, mother, Rosamond Swick, Aunt Billie Swick and father, Willard Swick.
She is survived by cousins, Nancy and Rosie of Indiana, AFS daughters Woon Kam Chan of Hong Kong and Alison Wee Garcia of San Jose, and 3 grandchildren.
Family would like to thank the Mary Seaborne, Always Best Care, and VNA Hospice for their loving care at the end of her life.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2015 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 404 Lincoln Avenue, Salinas, CA.
Reception will follow in church social hall hosted by the United Methodist Women
Burial will take place Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Garden of Memories Cemetery, 850 Abbott St., Salinas, CA 93901.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Guide dogs for the Blind or a charity of your choice in Sonya's name.
Marianne Cynthia Hunt
June 11, 1947 - October 11, 2015

Marianne Cynthia Hunt, a longtime resident of Westchester, CA, passed away on October 11, 2015 at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital in Salinas, California from a stroke she suffered on October 4th.
Born in Salinas to Charley and Aileen Breschini Hunt on June 11, 1947, Marianne was a graduate of Fremont Elementary, El Sausal Junior High School, and Salinas High School in 1965. She attended Hartnell College, and the University of Southern California where she received her undergraduate degree in 1969, and teaching credential shortly thereafter.
Marianne started her teaching career at King Junior High where she found her "King Family" of lifelong friends. After teaching at various Los Angeles middle schools, she completed her Masters in English and Psychology. She became a middle school counselor, and in 1991 a high school counselor. Marianne finished her teaching career at Huntington Park High School.
Marianne was instrumental in helping numerous students receive collegiate scholarships, many of whom became first generation college students. She was extremely proud of this, and during her time as a high school counselor received awards for her work. She retired from the Los Angeles School District in 2009 after 40+ years of dedicated service. Never married, teaching and counseling her students was her passion.
She was an avid USC supporter (football, basketball, volleyball, tennis and baseball) and attended men and women's sporting events, both home and away, on a regular basis. She became "Aunt Marianne" to many of the USC student athletes and their families. Upon retirement, she continued her life's passion by helping students and volunteering countless hours in the USC Athletics Department from 2009-2013. Marianne was a member of the Trojan Club, the Women of Troy, and a Galen Founder.
She recently attended her Salinas High's 50th class reunion, and was so happy to see and reconnect with former classmates. She was an avid reader, enjoyed conversing, and had never met a stranger. She was a caring and generous woman who is loved by many, and will be fondly remembered.
She is survived by her mother Aileen now living in Denver, CO; brother, Loran and his wife Kathleen Becker Hunt of Denver, CO; nephew, Bryan and his wife Mary O'Toole Hunt and their children, Anna and Bennett of Southlake, TX; nephew Sean Hunt of New York, NY; 1st cousins, Joan Hicks Baron of King City; Clair and Linda McElhany Hicks; Lloyd and Jayleen Hicks Appling all of Salinas; Tom and Jerilynn Hicks Beck of Arcadia, CA.
Rosary Service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015, 11:00a.m. at Struve and Laporte, 41 W. San Luis St. Salinas, Ca. 93901.

Deborah Ann Dozier
April 11, 1956 - October 2, 2015

Deborah Ann Dozier (Debbie) passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a brief illness.
Debbie was a Salinas High School graduate. She lived her life with passion and a desire for all to be happy. She was a lover of music of all types and even saw Elvis Presley perform live. She was passionate about chocolate and all epicurean delights. Her Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts, prepared alongside her sister Cathy, are legendary amongst the family. She was a lover and supporter of the local sports teams, especially the San Francisco 49ers, San Jose Sharks and San Francisco Giants.
Debbie is preceded in death by her father Robert Dozier, Sr.
She is survived by her mother Schirle (McGinn) Dozier and her siblings Robert (Allison), Michael (Kimberly), Kenneth (Gracie) and Catherine (Mitch Wilder). She is also survived by her niece, Kristy, and nephews Travis, Elliott, Trent, Samuel, Bryce, Kyle and Quinn as well as one great nephew, Kasen.
She was buried alongside her father in a private service at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life party will be held on November 1st, 2015 at 1p.m. You are encouraged to wear purple, Debbie's favorite color. Please RSVP to (831) 424-2202.

Kara Elizabeth Finney
September 27, 1991 - August 25, 2015

Kara Elizabeth Finney, 23, of San Jose passed away peacefully after a brief illness Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Kaiser Permanente Santa Teresa Medical Center in San Jose. Kara was born September 27, 1991 at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas.
She was a student at A.B. Ingham School for many years.
Kara's favorite things included her Grandparents, Cal and Vera Johnson of Illinois, her sister Amy, Amy's friends, music, Disneyland, horseback riding and swimming.
She is survived by her parents, Jane and James Finney of Illinois, and her sister, Amy of San Francisco.
A Memorial Service will be held 5:00p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Living Hope Church of the Nazarene on 1375 Josselyn Canyon Road, Monterey, CA.
Her family wishes to thank her wonderful teachers at A.B. Ingham School, the Star Riders horseback riding program for disabled children, her favorite doctor and advocate, Dr. W. Reid Giedt of Salinas, the caring staff at Natividad Medical Center, and her wonderful caregiver of the last two-and-a-half years, Romarie Aquino of San Jose.

Paul "Poli" Carranza
July 29, 1955 - September 15, 2015

Paul Carranza 60, a lifelong resident of Salinas, CA passed away on Tuesday September 15, 2015 and entered the kingdom of heaven.
He worked in agriculture, and he enjoyed reading and listing to music, especially those oldies but goodies. Also, he was an original San Francisco 49er and Giants fan. Poli had a heart of gold, in his infinite ways he genuinely demonstrated his acts of kindness and love towards his entire family and friends. We will miss him dearly but continue to celebrate his love for life.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents James and Placida Carranza and by his siblings; Joseph and Johnny Martinez, Richard, Steven, Rosie, and Patricia Carranza.
He is survived by his siblings; Tony and Esther Martinez, and Mary Noriega, Anita, Bonita, Marcie, David, Edward, and Michael Carranza, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 4:00.m. to 7:00p.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA. 93901.
