Mae Theresa Deen
May 14, 1923 - January 30, 2012
Resided in Salinas, CA
Mae Theresa Deen, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2012 after a brief illness, in Salinas, CA.
She was born on May 14, 1923, in Salinas, CA. She graduated from Salinas High School in 1941 married Harry Allen Deen in 1943.
Together they built a home and raised a family of six children on a then very rural street.
The same street she was born on. In 1979 she completed her Associates degree at Hartnell College.
She worked out of the home as a bookkeeper and as an Enrolled Agent for more than fifty years.
She also worked as the bookkeeper for the Young Trucking Systems in the 1970's.
In later years she enjoyed traveling and camping throughout California.
She took immense pride and joy in her family's long farming heritage.
She became active in city politics when it came to protecting the unique identity of her home street neighborhood.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Madonna Del Sasso Parish.
She was a member of the Mission Society of Enrolled Agents and the Society of California Accountants – Monterey Bay Chapter.
She was also a lifetime member of Weight Watchers.
She is preceded in death by her parents Carlo and Palmina Massolo, her husband, Harry Allen Deen, brothers and sisters Joe Massolo, Charlie Massolo, Attilio Massolo, Dominic Massolo, Louie Massolo, Corrine Thiesen, and Dante Massolo, daughters, Catherine Elizabeth Deen, Barbara Rose Deen, and grandson, Paul Phillip Johnson.
She is survived by her sons, Charles Allen (Susan) Deen, Harold Louis Deen, Kenneth Rollin Deen, and Mathew Robert Lloyd Deen, numerous Nieces and Nephews.
Visitation will be held. Wednesday, February 15, 2012, from 1:00p.m.to 5:00p.m at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St. Salinas, CA 93901
Rosary will be Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 7:00p.m. at Struve and Laporte Chapel.
Funeral Mass will be Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 10:00a.m. at Madonna Del Sasso Church, 320 East Laurel Drive, Salinas, CA 93906
Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery, 850 Abbott Street, Salinas, CA. 93901.
The family is especially grateful to the caring and dedicated staff at Eden Valley Care Center.
Memorials may be made in our mother's name to the Eden Valley Care Center, 612 Main Street, Soledad, CA. 93960.

James E. Laporte
January 8, 1936 - September 26, 2005
Resided in Salinas, CA
James E. Laporte, 69 of Salinas, California, passed away at home on Monday, September 26, 2005 after a short battle with lung cancer.
Jim was born January 8, 1936 in Salinas, California. He was a graduate of Salinas High School class of 1953 and received his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Nevada Reno in 1958.
Jim was co-owner of Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, joining the family business after graduating from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in 1960. Jim, along with his father, E.O. "Bill" Laporte and Jim's son, William Laporte have been serving the Salinas Valley at their time of need for 77 years.
Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He formerly coached little league baseball; Jim was a great 'sports dad'. Jim was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed every minute with his family.
MEMBERSHIPS: Salinas Elks Lodge #614, Salinas Golf and Country Club, the Knights of Columbus, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, former Boy Scouts Leader, Salinas Jaycees.

Daughter, Cathleen (William) Warren of Missoula, MT
Son, William (Callie) Laporte of Salinas
Grandchildren: Anastasia, Matthew and Mariel Warren of Missoula, MT
Landon, Makenzi and Hayden Laporte of Salinas
Sister: Diane (Warren) Tibbs of Salinas, CA
Brother-in-Law: John (Joyce) Morton of Cal Pine, CA
Nephews: Steven Tibbs, Thomas Morton and Clifford Morton
Niece: Susan Anderson

Nancy Diers Gullion
June 25, 1951 - January 14, 2013
Resided in Salinas, CA
Nancy Diers Gullion, 61, passed away on January 14, 2013 at Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA, from complications caused by her twelve year battle with Leukemia.
Nancy was born on June 25, 1951 in Salinas, CA and had lived in Salinas all of her life.
She attended Hartnell Community College and Santa Clara University, and she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and English from Santa Clara.
Nancy met Paul, her husband of 40 years, while they were attending Hartnell Community College.
For the past twenty years, she worked as the manager of her husband's law office.
Nancy was very active at First Presbyterian Church in Salinas, CA and enjoyed reading, gardening, and being with her family.
She will always be remembered for her smile, her laughter, her positive attitude, her love of God, and her love for her family and friends.
She made an impact on everyone she met.
Nancy was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Johnson Diers, and her father in law, Eugene "Gene" Gullion.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Paul D Gullion, her son, Matthew P Gullion, her daughter, Shelley C Escobar, her son in law, Nick Escobar, her granddaughter, Grace Escobar, and her grandson, Troy Escobar, her father, Herman "Lucky" Diers, and her mother in law, Wanda Gullion.
We would like to thank all of the nurses and doctors at Pacific Cancer Care, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital and Stanford Medical Center, and Dr. Aziz of Salinas and Dr. Coutre of Stanford for their outstanding care, thoughtfulness and compassion. You are all truly special people!
A private family graveside service was held at Garden of Memories in Salinas, CA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Nancy's honor may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 830 Padre Drive, Salinas, CA 93901.

Winifred Francis Crews
July 5, 1914 - January 6, 2011
Resided in Salinas, CA
Winifred Crews passed away quietly at her home after a long illness on January 6, 2011. Her daughter Meredith Crews was by her side.
She was 96 years old and lived a fulfilling life having 6 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren who admired and loved her.
She was born July 5, 1914 in Leslie Canada and her Family moved to California in 1924, living in Salinas and Spreckles for periods of time before settling in Gonzales where she attended Gonzales High School and graduated there in 1934.
After Graduation she moved back to Salinas and began her working life at the Salinas Laundry. Later she worked at the American Laundry until they closed on Abbott St.
Until her death she maintained a close relationship with her school friends from Gonzales and was blessed with their friendship.
She married the love of her life Clyde W. Crews in 1939 and they shared a happy relationship until his untimely death in 1980.
Their two daughters Meredith Crews and Wendy (Crews) Lawson provided her with many memorable times during the growth of their Families.
Meredith's children, Amy Steiner Rhoads and Aaron Lee Steiner live in Texas and Indiana respectively.
Wendy has 4 children, Belinda (Vince) McIntyre, of Australia, Kerry (Stephen) White, of Colorado, Jodie Claeys (Berten) Lawson, of Germany, and Gavin engaged to Becky, of Australia and her three Great Grandchildren Alice McIntyre, Timo Claeys and Calen White.
Winnie, as she was known, was active at St. Paul's Episcopal Church during the early years of her family and then for many more years was involved at St. George's Episcopal Church in North Salinas being a part of the Holy Rollers and maintaining a close relationship with the Church and it's Parishioners.
She was involved with the Active Seniors until her health prevented her from driving.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred Stemson and Florence Stemson, her husband, Clyde Crews and her sister, Dorothy Anderson.
She is survived by her Daughters, Meredith Crews, of Salinas and Wendy Lawson, of Australia as well as her 6 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren.
A memorial to honor her Life will be held at St. George's Episcopal Church, 98 Kip Drive, Salinas Ca., 93906 on January 22, 2011 at 11:30 AM with a Pot Luck Lunch to follow in the Parish Hall.
Donations can be sent to St. George's Episcopal Church at 98 Kip Drive, Salinas Ca., 93906.
A special thanks to her Pallative Care nurse, Jackie Chain and to all the wonderful people at Hospice and to her loving and caring doctor, Dr. Leslie Foote who has attended her since 2008.

Mervin J. Sarmento
July 30, 1926 - January 22, 2015
Resided in Castroville, CA
Mervin J. Sarmento, 88 of Castroville, CA passed away at home on January 22, 2015. He was born in Castroville, CA on July 30, 1926.
He was a retired Machinist.
Mervin was a member of Machinists Union and Castroville Water District Board
He was preceded in death by his parents Enos and Rosie Sarmento, sister Dorothy (at age 6), brother Edward, sisters Rosaline Bolcao and Marie Chini, and son-in-law Leonard Sims.
He is survived by his wife Glenna "Lovelle" Sarmento of Pacific Coast Care Center, daughters Carolyn Sims, Marilyn Pereira and LaVonne Ginn, all of Salinas; four grandchildren Jennifer (Mike) Maestri, Ryan (Barbara) Pereira, Carrie (Scott) Pearce, Leslie (J.J.) Lakey; six great-grandchildren Jacob and Travis Maestri, Christopher and Caitlyn Pearce, and Emma and Lauren Lakey; his brother Kenneth; and his little dog Cindy.
Mervin Sarmento was born July 30, 1926 and passed away on January 22, 2015 at home.
He was born in the family home at the corner of Geil and Poole Streets and attended Castroville Elementary School where he met his childhood sweetheart and future wife, Lovelle Shaw, whom he married on June 7, 1947.
In 1955, he moved his family into the home he built on his father's former dairy land, on the opposite corner of the block from where he was born--there he lived his next 59 years.
Mervin was a 1944 graduate of Salinas High School and served on the class reunion committees for many years.
He was also a lifelong member of the Machinists Union and served for many years on the Castroville Water District Board.
He had a strong work ethic beginning as a very young boy as he worked on his father's dairy where he continued until after he was married.
He then worked as a temporary foreman at the P.G.& E. power plant in Moss Landing, CA for a couple years during its construction until he took a permanent position in 1952 with Kaiser Refractories.
After 37 years of service with Kaiser, he retired as a machinist in 1989.
Mervin was an extremely hard worker and skilled in wood and all types of metal work.
Until recent years, he performed most of his own automotive repairs and home maintenance.
Besides spending time with his family, Mervin loved music and enjoyed playing his accordion until his health no longer allowed.
During his younger years, he also enjoyed playing horseshoes and was quite good.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA 93901

James Shelby Pepper Sr.
February 24, 1943 - November 12, 2014
Resided in Salinas, CA
James Shelby Pepper Sr. 71 of Salinas passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 12, 2014. He was born February 24, 1943 in Salinas, CA. Where he was a life-long resident.
He was a kind and generous man who loved the outdoors, camping, gardening, and cooking a big breakfast. He especially enjoyed caring for his beloved pets. His family, extended family, and close friends will deeply miss him.
He was a Truck Driver for 45 years.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Pepper of Salinas, daughters, Lucinda Plummer of Spreckels, CA. Melissa James of Lodi, CA., sons, Justin Pepper of Los Banos, CA, James Pepper Jr. of Lake Tahoe, CA., 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren..
Private family services will be held at a later date.
