Tony Yuichi Miyanaga, 53, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula with his family by his side. He was born on July 13, 1963 in Salinas to Joe Hideo Miyanaga and Kazuko Miyanaga.
Well known for his barbeque cooking skills from his experience in the restaurant business in his early years, he held positions with various agricultural related firms, was a commercial painter and more recently caregiver for his mother before becoming ill.
He attended local schools and resided in Salinas most of his life. An avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed football and was a loyal Green Bay Packers fan collecting memorabilia. He had many hobbies and loved fishing, tennis, biking and more recently building, repairing and racing RC cars.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Hideo Miyanaga.
Surviving family members are his mother, Kazuko Miyanaga, sisters, Machiko Miyanaga and Yukie Miyanaga and feline companion, “Boots” all of Salinas.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Jerry Rubin, the nurses, nurse’s aids and staff of Terrace West at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for the care provided.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Buddhist Temple of Salinas, 14 California Street, Salinas, California 93901.

Sandra June Abrams
May 30, 1940 - June 16, 2017

Resided in Salinas, CA
Sandra (Sandy) June Abrams, 77 of Prunedale Calif. passed away from complications of an illness on Friday June 16, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was born Sandra June Hill, in Corona, Ca. on May 30, 1940.
Though she traveled halfway around the world with her Husband of 59 years during his career in the Air Force, she had been a Monterey County resident for the last 46 years.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 42 years, and cared deeply for the friends she made though the Order. She loved to travel and it really didn’t matter if she was traveling to see family, going on a cruise, or going camping, she was always ready to go. She always had a book and a bag of sunflower seeds nearby. She spent many of her days caring for her grandchildren and then her great-grandchildren. She was a loving and caring person, saying “there is always room at our table for one more.”
Sandy is survived by her: Husband Cecil (Abe) F Abrams Sr.
Children: Teresa (Terry) Gentry, Cecil (Abe) Abrams Jr., Dorothy (Dori) Horn and Robin Abrams
9 Grandchildren and 18 Great-Grandchildren, Sister’s Mickey, Jeanean, Toni and Debbie and many nieces, nephews and an innumerable number of friends.
She was preceded in death by her Grandson, Adam II and son-in-law Pedro
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 9, 2017, from 1:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the Eastern Star Service at 2:00pm, in the home she loved so very much. Please call 831-663-4932 for address information.

Peggy Jane Black
March 30, 1935 - July 1, 2017

Resided in Salinas, CA
Peggy Jane Black, 82, passed away July 1, 2017 in Salinas.
She was born March 30, 1935 in Eakly, Oklahoma and lived in Salinas since the age of 9.
Survivors: daughters, Lyn (Brandt) Burghall, Brandi Faro, Step-son, Rocky (Naomi) Black, grandchildren, Brittany Burghall, Courtney Amanda Burghall, Nicholas Faro, Leah Faro, Amber Black, four great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Vonnie Matlock, brother-in-law, Martin Bazabal, along with several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by mother, Elsie Young, husband, Therman “Bud” Black, daughter, Sandee Cooper and brother, Johnny Patterson.
Graveside Services to be held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella, CA on Monday July 10th at 10:30a.m.

Mario Mauro Meza
March 25, 1959 - June 14, 2017
Born in Soledad, CA
Resided in Salinas, CA
Our brother Mario was born in Salinas, CA on March 25th of 1959 and passed away at the age of 58 in Salinas where he resided for the past 8 years. Mario spent most of his youth and adulthood in Soledad in the care of his loving parents, now deceased, Frank and Rose Meza.
Our brother, in spite of his developmental disability, enjoyed a full life owing to his parents' determination to provide him a sense of self-worth. They accomplished this by enrolling him in many tailored work programs, social activities, scout sponsored events along with many yearly Special Olympics events where he medaled many a time.
We all will sorely miss him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Frank Meza and Rose Meza, sisters Olivia Greco(George) and Rosemarie Flores (Pete).
He is survived by his siblings, Hortencia Morales, Al Meza, Frank Meza (Julia), and Gus Meza (Lupe).
Visitation will be held from 1:30pm to 5:00pm Monday, June 19, 2017 at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 West San Luis Street, Salinas, CA 93901.
Mass will be held 10:00am Tuesday June 20, 2017 at Our Lady of Solitude Church, 235 Main Street, Soledad, CA 93960.
Burial to follow at Soledad Cemetery, 1711 Metz Road, Soledad, CA 93960

Josefina Vallar Sabado
March 20, 1950 - June 12, 2017
Born in Manila P.I.
Resided in Salinas, CA
Josefina V. Sabado passed on June 12, 2017, at the age of 67. Josefina, better known to her relatives and friends as Josie, Nene, and Um-ma, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
She was born on March 20, 1950 in Manila, Philippines, where after graduating from college, she became a Lab Technician and worked for a physician's private practice until she immigrated to the United States. In 1976, she married the love of her life, Melvin, and they were happily married for 41 years. Josie was an employee with the United States Postal Service (San Jose Branch) as a Mail Processing Clerk for 31 years and retired in 2015.
She was a strong believer in God who prayed the rosary daily and was a devout member of Madonna Del Sasso Church. Her favorite pastimes were spending time with her first grandchild, Sean; watching basketball, especially her favorite team, the Warriors; spending time with family and friends; traveling; and cooking. She was famous for her delicious lasagna, eggplant omelets, ukoy, and binangkal that everyone enjoyed.
Josie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She never forgot any family and friends' birthdays or anniversaries. She was generous, gracious, thoughtful, giving, kind, loving, selfless, humble, gentle, strong, and hardworking.
She is preceded in death by her parents Gavino and Mercedes Vallar; and her brothers Alberto Vallar, Marcelino Vallar, and Manuel Vallar.
She is survived by her husband Melvin Sabado, son Christopher Sabado, twin daughters Valerie Johnson (Mark) and Jennilee Sabado; grandson Sean Swim; siblings Lucia Vallar Lasdoce (Bonifacio), Gavino Vallar, Jr., Jesus Vallar, Ramon Vallar, Rosario Vallar Yamamoto (Emil), Evelyn Vallar Cepe (Bodie), Edgar Vallar (Penny), Teresa Vallar (Walter); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 20, 2017 from 1:00pm to 7:00opm at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 West San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901.
Rosary will be held Tuesday, June 20, 2017 7:00pm at Struve and Laporte Chapel.
Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 10:00am at Madonna Del Sasso Church, 320 East Laurel Drive, Salinas, CA 93906.
Entombment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, CA 93907.

Dominic Emma
April 17, 1931 - June 19, 2017

Resided in Salinas, CA
Dominic Emma, Dad, Grandpa, Pop, passed peacefully at his home on Monday June 19, 2017.
He was born April 17, 1931.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Connie, in 2015.
He is survived by his daughter, Joanne (Bill) Hellwig of Prunedale, Rita Emma of San Jose, and Linda (Abundio) Rivas of San Jose and his two grand-daughters, Gia and Danielle.
Visitation will be held from 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m.Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA. 93901.
Funeral Service will be held at 4:00p.m. Friday, June 23, 2017 at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA. 93901.
Entombment will be at Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto, CA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Central Coast VNA & Hospice of Monterey County to whom they are extremely grateful.

George Toru Higashi
June 17, 1925 - May 17, 2017
Born in Inglewood, CA.
Resided in Salinas, CO
George Toru Higashi, 91, of Salinas passed away on May 17, 2017. He was born on June 17, 1925 in Inglewood, California to Iso and Gozaemon Higashi.
Son of Japanese immigrants, George began a long career in the agricultural business in Inglewood, California. Under Executive Order 9066, the family moved to Brighton, Colorado where they continued farming during World War II. In 1949, the family set roots in the Salinas Valley where they began farming 38 acres on Carr Lake, George's final residence. George spent over 70 years in the agricultural business, farming in Inglewood California, Brighton Colorado, the San Joaquin Valley, and throughout the Salinas Valley. In 2001, he was recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture for his contributions to American Agriculture.
George enjoyed travelling all over the world--often visiting places more than once, growing his own summer garden, and spending time with his grandchildren. George was a board member of the Salinas Valley Japanese American Citizens League and Yamato Cemetery. He was a supporter of many organizations including the Japanese American National Museum, National Japanese American Memorial Foundation, Lincoln Avenue Presbyterian Church, Chartwell School and the Salinas Buddhist Temple. He was a founding member of the UC Davis Chancellor's Club.
George was preceded in death by his daughter, Carolyn Higashi; parents, Iso and Gozaemon Higashi; his sister, Kazuko Fushimi; and his brothers, Noburo Higashi and Shiro Higashi.
He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Janice Higashi, sons, Gary Higashi and Kenneth Higashi (Lyn); daughter, Shari Higashi; and grandchildren, Megan Higashi, Gregory Higashi, and Douglas Higashi, as well as numerous family members.
Memorials may be made to Salinas Valley Japanese American Citizens League and/or Yamato Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on June 24, 2017 at the Buddhist Temple of Salinas, 14 California Street, Salinas CA 93901.
