Wilma Lillian Cursi
September 16, 1921 - November 21, 2019

Resided in Castroville, California
Wilma L. Cursi of Castroville, CA after a long life of 98 years died on Thursday November 21, 2019. Wilma was born September 16, 1921 in Salinas to Anselmo and Elvezia Pura of Ticino, Switzerland.
The family moved to Greenfield CA where Wilma attended grade school and graduated from King City High School in 1938. After graduation she moved back to Salinas and started working at the local bank. While working at the bank she met her future husband, Marino A. (Lefty) Cursi. They were married in April 1948 and settled in Castroville to raise their family. Through out her life Wilma worked various jobs in the artichoke packing sheds, as a teacher’s aid in Castroville Elementary, and her most rewarding job as a Library Assistant at Roosevelt School in Salinas. Wilma was very active in PTA, Italian Catholic Federation, and Altar Society. She enjoyed socializing with the Knit Wits, Castroville Dance Club, and Birthday Club. She enjoyed crafting, gardening, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Lefty in 2003 after 55 years of marriage.
Wilma is survived by her daughter, Candice Jansen (Edwin, deceased), Steven Cursi (Carol), grandchildren, Steven Jansen (Beatrice), Michael Jansen (Molly), Gianna Cursi, Jeremy Cursi, and 4 great grandchildren.
The Family of “Wilmie”would like to thank the Brookdale Clare Bridge staff and VNA Hospice for their wonderful care.
Funeral Mass and Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at 10:00am at Our Lady of Refuge at 11140 Preston Street, Castroville. A reception to follow at the Parish Hall.

Raymond Herbert Smith, Jr.
June 15, 1947 - January 1, 2020
Born in Salinas, California
Resided in Salinas, California
Raymond Herbert Smith, Jr. was born in Salinas on Father’s Day, 1947 and resided there his whole life before succumbing after a brief battle with recently diagnosed lung cancer, passing away peacefully on New Year’s Day, 2020 at age 72.
He grew up and lived in the Alisal area, attending Fremont School, Saint Mary’s grammar school, El Sausal Junior High, and Salinas High School. He graduated from Hartnell College in 1967 and achieved a degree of success there as an All-Coast Conference offensive tackle on the Lettuce Bowl championship team of 1966. He and teammate Richard Smith received honorable mention on the Junior College Grid Wire All-American roster.
Ray worked for approximately 20 years at the Spreckels Sugar Factory until its demise in the mid-80s. He particularly liked the physical aspects of the job and mastered all facets of the evaporation process, learning plumbing skills there that he applied as a general handyman later on. After Spreckels, he worked for Henry and Bill Locatelli’s gardening concern, and for himself as a gardener as well. He worked many years as a clerk at the Quality Liquors and Quality Market. After retiring, he enjoyed travelling with friends, visiting Major League Baseball ballparks as well as casinos across the country.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Herbert “Whitey” Smith and Rose Marie Smith (nee Yop), and by his sister Maureen, and his brother Tom.
He is survived by brothers, Tim Smith, of Monterey; Pat Smith (wife: Kim), of Napa; and Terry Smith (wife: Marge), of Duluth, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and -nephews. He was a life-long member of Saint Mary of the Nativity Parish.
Chapel Blessing will be held 10:00a.m. Monday, January 13, 2020 at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, Ca. 93907.

Nichole Ann Noroian
December 1, 1980 - December 25, 2019

Resided in Salinas, California
Nichole Ann Noroian passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 25th with her family by her side. Nichole was born to Chuck and Margaret Noroian on December 1, 1980 in Salinas, California. She was 39 years old. Nichole was unbelievably strong and gallantly battled cancer as a teenager and a traumatic brain injury the last twenty one months.
Before a cancerous brain tumor changed her life in 1995, Nichole was a champion baton twirler traveling the nation winning competition after competition. Her coach, Linda Aguilar, had a great influence on the young woman she became. She attended Natividad and El Gabilan Elementary Schools, Harden Middle School and graduated from North Salinas High School in 1998. She served as Class President all four years. She played volleyball, field hockey and swam for the Vikings. She remained an avid Lady Viking Basketball team “cheerleader” until her accident and was a huge Coach Jackson fan! After high school, Nichole attended Hartnell College, CSUMB and earned an Agriculture Communications degree at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
Nichole was very active around the community. She loved 4-H and was a nine year member of the Natividad 4-H Club. She served as a Monterey County 4-H All Star and a California State 4-H Diamond Star. After college, she became a 4-H leader. She was involved in other community organizations such as Relay for Life, California Women in Agriculture, Young Farmers and Ranchers and the Gonzales Young Farmers. Nichole loved to help others; it was her passion. She was a wonderful caretaker to both of her grandmothers taking them to their appointments, cooking and baking with them and going out to eat with them. Her greatest loves were her family, her grandmothers and her friends. Her time with them was memorable.
Nichole loved sports and she LOVED her teams! She followed the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, was an avid Lakers fans, and supported both the San Francisco Giants and 49’ers! And she had the “gear” to wear when those teams played!!
Nichole will be remembered for her warm heart, her smile that could light up a room, and her generous spirit. She always had a story to tell and a great sense of humor. Those who knew her had a friend for life!
On March 29, 2018, Nichole was involved in a single-car accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury that would eventually take her life. During her twenty one month hospitalization, Nichole was courageous in her battle and fought until her last breath.
Nichole is survived by her parents, Chuck and Margaret Noroian, her brother Nick (Ashlee) Noroian, her sister Noel Noroian, her uncle Stan Piffero, her niece Maelynn Noroian, several uncles, aunts and cousins and countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Sergio and Nancy Piffero and her paternal grandparents, Charlie and Hosana Noroian.
Visitation will be held 3:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. Monday, January 6, 2020 at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA., 93901.
Rosary will be held at 7:00p.m. Monday, January 6, 2020 at Struve and Laporte Chapel.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00a.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Madonna Del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Drive, Salinas, CA. 93906.
Burial to follow at Gonzales District Cemetery, 1000 US 101 South, Gonzales, CA. 93926.

Albert Clark Atnip
October 3, 1921 - December 27, 2019

Resided in Salinas, California
Albert Clark Atnip, aged 98, passed away Friday night. Albert (Al), originally from Gilroy, was a longtime Salinas and Monterey resident. He was employed with AT&T; and Pacific Bell in Salinas and Monterey for 35 years, retiring in 1983 as a construction supervisor. Al enlisted in the United States Marine Corp during World War II as an infantryman. He served with the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade and participated in the liberation of Pacific Islands (including the freeing of Guam) from Japanese occupation. After the war, Al returned home to Salinas and met the love of his life Doris. They were married for 47 years. Doris died in 1993. Al will be remembered as a humble, kind and considerate man with a good sense of humor who did not take himself too seriously. Semper Fi Al. RIP. (Al requested a private burial service. He will be laid to rest at Garden of Memories Memorial Park in Salinas, California).

Jeffery A. Daughenbaugh
January 22, 1949 - December 7, 2019
Born in Mundelein, Illinois
Resided in Monterey, California
Jeffery Daughenbaugh passed away in Salinas, with family at his bedside after a long illness. He was the third of six children born to Duffy and Marjorie Daughenbaugh. Much of his boyhood was spent in Mundelein, IL, where he attended Santa Maria del Popolo school and enjoyed many small town adventures with his brothers. In 1965, the family moved to Watsonville, where Jeff graduated from Mora High School. He went on to attend the University of San Diego and from there gained early admission to the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. While living and attending dental school in San Francisco, he met his wife of over 45 years, Cheryl. After several years practicing general dentistry, Jeff headed to Boston University and obtained his Masters of Science in Dentistry for Endodontics. Upon graduating, Jeff returned to California and opened his own practice in Salinas, which saw him provide treatment for root canals to patients for over 30 years. When he was not hard at work in his office, Jeff enjoyed home improvement projects, fly fishing and traveling. He became a proficient baker and was a connoisseur of good food and wine.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother Jay.
He is survived and remembered by his wife Cheryl, daughter Kristina (Gavin Owen), grandson Duncan, brothers John (Su Mei) & Joseph (Linda), sisters Jane & Jeane (Michael Daley), sister-in-law Joan (Gary Grant), numerous nieces and one nephew.
His life will be celebrated during a Mass at San Carlos Cathedral, 500 Church Street, Monterey, CA. 93940 on Friday, January 10, 2020 at 10:30am.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to either San Carlos Cathedral or the American Heart Association.

Ronald Dale Carpenter
July 21, 1946 - December 7, 2019

Resided in Nampa, Idaho
Ronald Dale Carpenter, age 73, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 7, 2019, surrounded by his family in Nampa, Idaho. He was born on July 21, 1946 in Kingsburg, California to Roy and Virginia Carpenter. He was raised on the family farm in Prunedale where they grew strawberries.
Ron attended Moss Landing Middle School, Watsonville High School and Hartnell College. In 1964, he joined the IBEW Apprentice Program, working with Salinas Valley Electricians JATC, and was employed by Collins Electric. In 1968, he completed the apprenticeship program and worked at the Firestone Plant, Moss Landing Power Plant and Central Coast Electric as a Journeyman Wireman, Foreman and General Foreman. On July 7, 1986, Ron became the Business Manager of IBEW Local 234 in Castroville. He held this position until his retirement in 2002. He served on the Health & Welfare Committee, Tri-County JATC Board, Labor Management Committee Council, Executive Board, and Council on Industrial Relations. He also served on the Central Labor Council Board, Monterey/Santa Cruz Building & Construction Trades, Monterey County Hazardous Waste Management Advisory Committee from 1994 to 2000. Ron took great pride and embedded the true meaning of Union in taking care of his members of his local, and went beyond the call of duty to help them. He was a proud Union representative to all his fellow brothers and sisters of any Union affiliation.
Ron was very involved in his community and in the activities of his children. He coached and was a past president of Atlantic Little League, was very active in the local trailer club and Dance & Twirl, as well as a long-time volunteer with the Castroville Artichoke Festival. Using his electrical expertise, he assisted with the building of Alisal High School, the IBEW Union Hall in Castroville, and worked to restore electricity to the city of Santa Cruz and helped rebuild the Catholic Church in Pajaro after the 1989 earthquake
He married his high school sweetheart, Charlyne, in 1965. Together, they raised three children and loved to travel. Ron enjoyed camping, adventures across the United States, and cruises to Hawaii.
Ron is survived by his wife of 54 years, Charlyne, of Nampa, Idaho, son, Brian (Kristen) Carpenter of Las Vegas, Nevada, son, Chris (Mindy) Carpenter of Salinas, California, daughter, Kerry (Freddie) Monize of Payette, Idaho, grandchildren William, Stephanie, Hunter, Joshua, Mari, Brandon, Francisco, Gabriel, Nathan, Michael, Zebekiah, Ava, Kawlijah, Daniel and Elijah, great-grandchildren Athena and Cameron, and brother, Roy, of Nampa, Idaho. He was preceded in death by grandaughter, Madison.
In keeping with the wishes of Ron, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to JDRF, 200 Vesey Street, 28th Floor, New York, NY 10281.

Brigida Coloma Taganas
October 1, 1926 - December 16, 2019

Resided in Salinas, California
Brigida Coloma Taganas, 93, passed away on December 16, 2019 at her home surrounded by family.
Brigida was born October 1, 1926 in Cabulalaan, Bacarra Illocos Norte, Philippines. She was the youngest of 6 children and the last surviving sibling. She was an active member of the Filipino American Association, the Laoaguenian Association, Angela’s Angels and the Madonna del Sasso Parrish.
Brigida married Alfredo Taganas on November 24, 1943. She was a military wife who raised 4 children while her husband was often at sea. In 1966, after 21 years of military service her husband retired from the U.S. Navy and they moved to Philippines. In 1968 they returned to the United States and made Salinas their permanent home.
Brigida was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her hobbies included early morning walks at El Dorado Park, gardening, Bingo and playing cards. She also enjoyed making Filipino desserts and ballroom dancing with her husband. Brigida cherished time with family, especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Brigida & Alfredo loved to travel. They vacationed to Hawaii, Philippines, Europe and enjoyed cruises to the Caribbean Islands.
Brigida is survived by daughter, Florence Lee (Steve), son, Danny Taganas, daughter, Nanci Hatter (Bill), daughter-in-law, Marcy Taganas (David);sister-in-law Jenny Ochale (Rudy); Grandchildren, Celina Duffy (Owen), Christina Bailey (Rich), Naomi Ansaldo (Bob), Aaron Lee (Marie) and Melissa Hager (Brett); Great-Grandchildren, Emily, Bridget, Natalie, Audrey, Annie and Sydney; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Alfredo Taganas, son Willie Taganas and parents Esteban & Francisca Coloma.
The Taganas family would like to acknowledge and thank Brigida’s caregivers, “Liza’s Angels”, especially Liza and Cathy. We appreciate all the help and loving care she received. A special thank you to Rose, a dear friend and home companion to Brigida. They loved “Nanay” very much and will always be a part of the Taganas family.
