James M. Porter

A graveside service was held Saturday afternoon at Lakewood Memorial Park for James Mack Porter, 77, of Ceres. He died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004 at his home.

Born Oct. 26, 1927, Mr. Porter was a native of Bradford, Ark., and lived in Ceres for 40 years. He was a molder operator with Hershey Foods for 20 years. Mr. Porter enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

Mr. Porter leaves behind his wife, Mabel Porter of Ceres; three children, Larry Porter of Ceres, Michael Porter of San Antonio and Zana Teaney of Avery; two brothers, William Porter of Lodi and Richmond Porter of New Mexico; his sister, Zana Looney of Groveland; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister.

Jim Cypert

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Lakewood Memorial Park for Jim Cypert, 42, of Modesto. He died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004 at a friend's home.

Eaton Family Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.

Born Aug. 8, 1962, Mr. Cypert was a native of Ceres, and lived in Modesto for 42 years. He was a truck driver, and enjoyed fishing and working on cars.

Mr. Cypert leaves behind his son, James L. Cypert Jr. of Hillsboro, Ore.; two brothers, Hal Cypert of Visalia and Andy Cypert of Oakdale; grandmother, Helen Cypert of Modesto; and one grandchild.

Remembrances may be sent to Gospel Rescue Mission, 1400 Yosemite Blvd., Modesto, CA 95354-2840.

John C. Whitaker

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Jan. 16 at First Parish Church in Kingston, Mass., for John Carleton Whitaker, 80, of Plymouth, Mass. He died Monday, Nov. 15, 2004 at the Mayflower Nursing Home.

Inurnment was private under the direction of Richard Davis Funeral Homes in Plymouth, Mass.

Born Sept. 12, 1924, Mr. Whitaker was a native of Chetek, Wisc., and lived in Modesto for 40 years prior to moving to Plymouth in 2000. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, in 1949 with a degree in journalism. Mr. Whitaker taught civics and American government at Modesto High School until 1989. He was treasurer of the Stanislaus Wildlife Care Center in Hughson.

He leaves behind three sisters, Carol Jacobson of Plymouth, Edith McKee of Austin, Texas, and Marian Rice of Katooma, Australia.

Remembrances may be sent to the Stanislaus Wildlife Care Center, P.O. Box 298, Hughson, CA 94326.

John C. Whitaker

John Frost

John Richard Frost, 63, of Kentucky, died Thursday, Nov. 18 at Parkview Care Center.

A native of Arkansas, he lived in Oakdale for 24 years prior to retiring in Puducah, Kentucky eight years ago. He spent a number of years as a truck driver. He was Scoutmaster for Troop #99 and Troop #10. He enjoyed the outdoors and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Pennie Harrison of Modesto, John A. Frost and wife Carol of Kentucky, James Frost and his wife Rachel of Oakdale, Dolan Frost and his wife Heather A. of Stockton and Ben Frost and wife Janice of Utah; sisters, Evadean Jones of Riverbank, Lulabell McGuire, Vivian Beard and Julie Hisaw, all of Missouri; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dolan and Tennie (Hays) Frost.

Services were held on Monday, Nov. 22 at Milner and Orr Funeral Homes of Puducah. Graveside services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Dogwood Cemetery, East Prairie, Missouri.

Bernadette Long

Bernadette Carole Long, 70, of Oakdale died Thursday, Dec. 2 in Oakdale.

A native of Tulare, she lived in Oakdale for four years. She was a housekeeper at Orangeburg Convalescent Hospital for six years. She was a member of Oak Valley Church.

She is survived by her children, James Allen Long, Jr. of Oakdale, Patricia Coonfield and Monica Gregory, both of North Carolina; sisters, Charlotte Ponte of Oakdale, Andrea Sozinho of Clovis, Magdaline Furnare of Stockton; brother, Anthony Fernandes of San Jose; and six grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 1 p.m. at Oak Valley Church. No visitation.

Manuel G. Arvizo

The Ceres Chapel of Franklin & Downs was in charge of arrangements for Manuel G. Arvizo, 81, of Modesto. He died of natural causes at his home on Nov. 28, 2004.

Burial was at the Ceres Memorial Park on Friday. A mass was held Friday morning at St. Jude's Catholic Church.

Born April 6, 1923, Mr. Arvizo was a native of Mexico and lived in Modesto for 35 years. He worked on farms and ranches for 60 years. Mr. Arvizo was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church.

He leaves behind his son, Jorge Arvizo of Modesto; four brothers, Sylvester Arvizo, Rosario Arvizo, Safiro Arvizo and Rafael Arvizo, all of Mexico; two sisters, Aurora Arvizo and Rosa Arvizo, both of Mexico; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catalina Arvizo.

Maunella E. Zaragoza

A funeral was held Friday at Second Baptist Church in Modesto for Maunella Elizabeth Zaragoza, 19, of Ceres. She died on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004 at Doctor's Medical Center in Modesto.

A Mass was also held at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Ceres.

Burial was at Ceres Memorial Park under the direction of Evins Funeral Home.

Born Jan. 3, 1985, Miss Zaragoza was a native and lifelong resident of the Ceres-Modesto area. She worked at Chuck E Cheese's in Bakersfield for two months. Maunella attended St. Jude's Catholic Church. She enjoyed music and clothes.

She leaves behind her mother, Eliza Castaneda of Modesto; her father, Jose Zaragoza of Modesto; four brothers, Victor Zaragoza and Jaime Zaragoza, both of Modesto, and Miguel Zaragoza and Oscar Zaragoza, both of Ceres; her sister, Lilliana Zaragoza of Modesto; and her grandparents, Socorro Castaneda of Winnemucca, Nev., and Tomas Zaragoza of Mexico.

Rosa Loconte

A Mass was held Tuesday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church for Rosa Dattomo Loconte, 94, of Hughson. She died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

Burial was at St. Stanislaus cemetery Mausoleum in Modesto under the direction of the McHenry Chapel of Franklin & Downs.

Born Sept. 8, 1910, Mrs. Loconte was a native of Bitritto, Italy, and had lived in Hughson since 1965. She previously resided in Modesto for 18 years. Mrs. Loconte was a homemaker for 72 years and a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Italian Catholic Federation Branch 316 and Maria S. di Constantinopoli Club.

She leaves behind her daughter, Portia Bavaro of Hughson; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guiseppe Vito Loconte; one brother; and four sisters.

Remembrances may be sent to Boy's Town of Italy, 250 E. 63rd St., New York, NY 10021; or to St. Anthony's Catholic Church, P.O. Box 909, Hughson 95326.

Icle M. Coburn

A graveside service was held Thursday at Lakewood Memorial Park for Icle "Billie" Marie Coburn, 89, of Hughson. She died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004 at Samaritan Village in Hughson.

Lakewood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born Jan. 30, 1915, Mrs. Coburn was a native of Tuscumbia, Mo., and had lived in Hughson since 1942. She was a silk finisher for 20 years, and a member of First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Coburn leaves behind her brother, Mozell McGowen of Eldon, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Uel Coburn; her son, James Coburn; and a sister.

Joseph R. Ogden

A graveside service will be at 1p.m. today at Lakewood Memorial Park for Joseph R. Ogden, 81, of Modesto. He died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center.

A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Valley View Church of the Nazarene at Whitmore Avenue and Faith Home Road.

Born Jan. 5, 1923, Mr. Ogden was a native of California and lived in Modesto for 10 years. He was a retired bus driver. Mr. Ogden enjoyed RV traveling, camping and reading. He belonged to Valley View Church of the Nazarene.

He leaves behind his wife, Caroyl N. Ogden of Modesto; two sons, Robert Ogden of Modesto and Thomas Ogden of Redmond, Ore.; his brother, Richard Ogden of Conway, Ark.; two sisters, Elizabeth Ogden of Littleton, Colo., and Rosemary Jensen of Conway, Ark.; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Remembrances may be sent to Valley View Church of the Nazarene, 3901 E. Whitmore Ave., Ceres, CA 95307.
