Rose Marie Johnson
1928-2004
Funeral services will be held at the Independence Cemetery
on Saturday, July 10 under the direction of Owens Valley Mortuary for Rose Marie Johnson, who died on July 6, 2004 in San Andreas following a long illness. She was 76 years old.
Born May 12, 1928 in Independence, she attended school in the Owens Valley. From the 1950s through the 1970s she and her husband, former county Supervisor Vernon E. "Johnny" Johnson, owned and operated several restaurants in the Owens Valley. Most notable among them was the Pines Café in Independence, which they owned from 1960-1974.
She resided in Independence until 2002, when she moved to Angels Camp to be closer to family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1986.
She is survived by three sons, Don Nichols of Lone Pine, Kim Johnson of Paradise and Verne Johnson of Angels Camp; a daughter, Carol Nichols-Kagamaster of Irvine; a brother, Larry Bell of Lone Pine; and her granddaughters, Katherine Rose Johnson and Molly Frances Johnson of Angels Camp.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pioneer Memorial United Methodist Church of Independence.
Rachel ‘Haworth' Page
1942-2004
A celebration of life will be held at the Lee Vining Presbyterian Church on Sunday, July 12 at 2 p.m. for Rachel "Haworth" Page, who died on June 27, 2004 in Boise, Idaho. The Order of the Eastern Star will officiate the celebration, which will be followed by a funeral service in Reno, Nev. at the Masonic Hall on Monday, July 12 at 1 p.m.
Rachel was born in Long Beach on Oct. 15, 1942.
A well-known local pianist, Rachel loved to "tickle the ivories" to all music. The piano was her favorite, but she was also very accomplished on the accordion. She livened up many parties and gatherings with her musical talents. She was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star and was the organist for the organization for many years.
Rachel grew up in Lee Vining and graduated from Lee Vining High School. She then attended a music program in Hawaii and soon after her return home she married and started her family. She tried many occupations in her life, but in the end found her calling as a web page designer. Her web site is very inspirational and is enjoyed by millions. She is survived by her step-father, Augie Hess of Bishop; brother and sister-in-law, Delbert and Linda Haworth of Bakersfield; sister, Vineca Hess of Lee Vining; sister and brother-in-law, Heidi and Floyd Griffin of Wellington, Nev.; son, Ernest Snider of Utah; daughter and son-in-law, Audra and Henry Gerdin of Reno, Nev.; eight grandchildren; three nephews; one great-niece; and one great-grandchild on the way.
Sandra Jeanette Allen
1943-2004
A funeral service will be held at the Brune & Buck Mortuary Chapel on Saturday, July 10 at 10 a.m. for Sandra Jeanette Allen who died in July 8, 2004. Pastor Billy Daugherty of Grace Community Church will officiate the service. Interment will be at the East Line Street Cemetery
in Bishop.
Sandra was born in Salem, Ind. on Jan. 5, 1943. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and companion. She spent her whole live loving and tending to her family. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and cooking. She was a Bishop resident for the past year.
She is survived by her longtime companion and best friend, Bob Russell of California City; children, Cindy Allen of Bishop; Kari Brandt of California City; Diane Allen of Mammoth Lakes; Teri Berner of Mammoth Lakes and Ronald Allen of West Hills; grandchildren, Danny Plasse; Austin Brandt; Sean Brandt; Sara Brandt; Francesca Spaccia; Jessica Spaccia; Geordie Spaccia; Noah Allen; Grant Berner; Russell Allen and Trevor Allen as well as her sisters, Pat Powers of Lake Forest; Sharon Frost of Lake Havasu, Ariz. and Susan Brown of Lake Havasu, Ariz.
Pearl Laird
1906-2004
A graveside funeral service will be held at the East Line Street Cemetery
in Bishop on Tuesday, July 13 at 10 a.m. for Pearl Laird who died on July, 5 2004. George Rye will officiate the service. Interment will be at the East Line Street Cemetery.
Pearl was born on Aug. 17, 1906 in Murillo, Ark. and was a Bishop resident for 59 years. She was 97 years old.
She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Chance of Bishop; granddaughter, Laura Gleason of Bishop; great-granddaughter, Lindsey Gleason of Bishop as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Carl Raymond Muth
1924-2004
A funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Bishop on Tuesday, July 13 at 10 a.m. for Carl Raymond Muth, who died on July 9, 2004 in Bishop. Fr. John Gracey will officiate the service. After the service everyone in attendance will be invited to a luncheon at the Parish Hall behind the church. Interment will be private.
Carl was born in Crow Agency, Mont. on Dec. 8, 1924. He lived in Bishop for 55 years. He was 79 years old.
Carl was active in many civic and charitable organizations. During his life in the Owens Valley he served for more than 50 years as an optometrist in both Bishop and Mammoth Lakes. He was also a World War II veteran.
Carl is survived by his wife, Wilma Muth of Bishop; son and daughter-in-law, Shelley and Joan Muth of Bellevue, Wash.; son, Bill Muth of Kirkland, Wash.; one daughter, Carla Muth of Boulder, Colo; two grandchildren, Christopher and Andrew Muth; one sister, Anna Hertz of Canyon Lake; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Norman Louis Hardcastle
1931-2004
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25 at the East Line Street Cemetery
in Bishop for Norman Louis Hardcastle. Fred Weatherly will officiate. Additional, there will be public viewing at Brune & Buck Mortuary on Monday, May 24 from 6-8 p.m.
Norman died on May 19, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nev. following heart surgery. He was 72.
Norman was born on Aug. 3 1931 in Selma. He graduated from Whittier High School where he excelled in the varsity wrestling program. He served for four years in the U.S. Air Force, and after his discharge he worked for GTE for 30 years, retiring as an administrator in 1984. He served as president of the Alpine Water Co. in Aspendell, where he lived for 13 years. Norman was also a member of the Bishop First Southern Baptist Church. Due to failing health, in 2002 he and his wife Diane moved to Arizona, which he loved. Diane and Norman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 10, 2004.
Norman was an active outdoorsman and a devoted father and grandfather. His favorite activities included hunting and fishing with his grandchildren. He will be sorely missed for the loving and generous family man that he was.
Norman is survived by his wife, Diane of Bullhead City, Ariz.; his son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Kim Hardcastle of Bishop; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Larry Downey of Pinion Hills; grandchildren, Emily and Alexandra Downey, and Sean and Brent Hardcastle; brothers, Gene Hardcastle of Florida, and Dennis and Douglas Hardcastle of Palmdale; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Ronald Chilwell (Sandy) Kemp
1923-2004
A private funeral service will be held on Saturday May 22 at Mount Whitney Cemetery
in Lone Pine for longtime Owens Valley resident Ronald Chilwell (Sandy) Kemp. A "celebration of life" will later be held at 5 p.m. on May 22 at the Lone Pine Pheasant Club.
Sandy died at Loma Linda University Hospital in Southern California on Wednesday, May 19 following complications from pneumonia. He was 81.
Sandy was born in San Bernardino on Feb. 16, 1923, the eldest son of Trevor and Nell Kemp. He spent his childhood on the family ranch in San Diego, and in his early 20s met his wife to be n and the true love of his life n Carol Mohaupt. After a short courtship they were married in September 1949 and a year later their eldest son, Scott, was born. This was followed by the birth of their eldest daughter, Victoria (Vicky), in 1953, second son Bill in 1955 and their two youngest daughters Elizabeth (Liz) in 1962 and Katherine (Katie) in 1964. Carol died unexpectedly in 1971.
Sandy was a much-loved and respected father and grandfather. His eldest son Scott has three sons, Matthew, Scott and Peter. Vicky has three daughters, Dawn, Brandi and Kim. Liz has three boys, Austin, Trevor and Will, and Sandy's youngest daughter Katie has two children, James and Emily.
In 1965 Sandy and his young family moved from San Diego to Lone Pine, in the Owens Valley. Here he was responsible for creating and developing the Rancho Samataguma lease holdings, which also included many private land holdings throughout the valley. The lease holdings were in excess of 100,000 acres and at their peak sustained the raising of more than 4,000 head of cattle. Sandy's keen eye for business management enabled him to create a lease system that to this day provides some of the most economical and efficient cattle raising in the whole of the state.
In addition to his work shaping and creating the leases, Sandy also became manager of the Catherine Spencer holdings and was responsible for the management of an additional six ranches with more than 1,500 head of cattle. The Rancho Samataguma was split into three parcels in 1984, and Sandy acquired the southernmost section n land that he had managed alongside his son Scott for the last 20 years.
Sandy Kemp was one of California's most respected and innovative cattlemen. He pioneered and developed many of the cattle management techniques used by ranchers today. He was one of the first ever to employ pregnancy testing as a management policy, and as far back as 1955 began using this diagnostic as a method of deciding which cows to keep and which to cull. Today preg testing is a standard cattleman's tool and its roots can be traced to the pioneering work done by Sandy in San Diego. Sandy was also passionate and informed about the broader health issues of raising cattle, and blazed a trail in the use of supplements. By seeking out and trying new supplemental combinations, Sandy established benchmarks that are widely used by today's cattle industry.
Another characteristic of Sandy's management style was the close relationship he forged with the Department of Water and Power throughout his career.
He always viewed the department as a cattleman's best ally, and worked hard to keep his liaison with them productive, positive and mutually beneficial.
Sandy was a well-known and much respected member of the Owens Valley community. Over the years he had extensive business interests in Lone Pine and Bishop, and had been responsible for employment and sponsorship of many of the towns' residents.
