Henry Smith
LIVE OAK - No service is planned for Henry T. Smith, 86, of Live Oak, who died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at a local care facility.
Smith was born
July 12, 1914, in Hawaii.
He worked in the farming industry for 20 years.
Smith was a self-taught electrician. He enjoyed fishing and working on cars.
Survivors include a daughter, Bobbie Solesski of Corning; two sons, Herman of Live Oak and Henry of Los Angeles; and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Inurnment will at Live Oak Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gridley-Block Funeral Chapel.
Pearl Baker
OROVILLE - A memorial service for Pearl Agnes Baker is scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 8, in the chapel of Ramsey-Newton-Bracewell Funeral Directors, 1175 Robinson St. Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery on Lincoln Boulevard.
Mrs. Baker, 79, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in Oroville. She was born
June 20, 1922 in Barber, Idaho to Harry and Ora Stites.
She had been a Butte County resident for 40 years and also was a bartender 40 years. She also was an Oroville resident.
Mrs. Baker was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary for 30 years. She also enjoyed flower gardening and traveling to Reno and Mazatlan, Mexico.
She is survived by her husband, Earl Baker Sr. of Oroville and five children: Robert Kessinger of Colusa; Larry Kessinger of Oregon; Earl Baker Jr. of Oroville; Ricky Baker of Oceanside and Deborah Hall of Colorado.
Additional survivors include three sisters, Grace Lane and Arlene Mailise both of Idaho and Claudia Smith of Texas ;three brothers, Wayne Stites of Oregon, Jack Stites of Texas and Raymond Stites of Missouri; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family suggests contributions in Mrs. Baker's memory be made to the Butte Home Health and Hospice in care of Ramsey-Newton-Bracewell Funeral Directors, which is handling the arrangements.
Hank Borjas
ORLAND - A gathering of family and friends for Henry "Hank" Borjas, 78, of Orland, will be receiving guests from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 at the Borjas home, 821 Third Street in Orland.
He died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, of cancer at his home with his family by his side.
He was born
May 26, 1923, in San Francisco to Antonio and Mary Borjas. He moved to Glenn County in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army for two years in the South Pacific.
In 1948 he married his wife of 53 years, Nadine Ferry, in Reno, Nev.
Borjas worked on dairy farms in the area for many years. The Frank Simons Dairy in the Plaza area is most memorable to him and his family. He drove the Plaza school bus while in the Plaza area and then worked for and retired from Orland Water Users as a ditch tender.
He was a past Grad Knight in the Orland branch of the Knights of Columbus. He served as a 4-H leader for the Plaza 4-H Club, coached little league and was involved with the Boy Scouts. He was a member of the Orland Volunteer Fire Department.
Borjas enjoyed fishing for salmon on the Sacramento River, playing cards, going to bingo and having coffee with his friends. He loved and was proud of his family.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine of Orland; four sons, Steve, Rick and Randy Borjas all of Orland and David Borjas of Dillon, Mont.; a daughter, Diana Bronk of Corvalis, Mont.; nine grandchildren, a step-grandson and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society or Orland Volunteer Fire Department in care of F.D. Sweet and Son Mortuary in Orland, which is handling the arrangements.
Barbara Carlin
YUBA CITY - A service for Barbara Joan Carnahan Carlin, 64, of Yuba City, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Liberty Ward, in Gridley.
A reception will follow the service at the Gridley Moose Lodge.
Mrs. Carlin died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at a South Lake Tahoe hospital of sudden cardiac arrest.
She was born
Aug. 1, 1937, in Marysville to James Martin Carnahan and Imogene Elizabeth Chase Carnahan (Plantz). She was a 1955 graduate of Marysville High School, a 1957 graduate of Yuba College and 1966 graduate of Chico State University.
On April 5, 1957, she married Larry Clifford Carlin of Gridley. They lived in Sacramento for two years and moved to Gridley to raise their family.
She was a retired Gridley school teacher and supervisor for student teachers at Chico State. Joan Carlin belonged to Beta Sigma Phi, AAUW, Gridley Junior Women, past president of Gridley Teacher's Association, California Teachers Association, and National Education Association.
She was also a lifetime member of NEA-R and CTA-R; member of State Council CTA; vice chairman of Chico Service Center Council, CTA; board member of Yuba Sutter Oratorio Society; Sacramento Symphony; past honored queen and board member of International Order of Job's Daughters; Order of Rainbow for Girls; Genealogical Society; Mayflower Society, Massachusetts Chapter; Campfire Girls; and founder of the Gridley Chapter of California Junior State Scholarship Federation.
She was a 36-year resident of the Yuba-Sutter Area and 35-year resident of Gridley.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Larry of Yuba City; four daughters, Paulette Carlin Mariano of Pebble Beach, Lori Carlin Proctor of Danville, Melissa Carlin Ishida of Woodbridge and Meredith Carlin First of Elk Grove; a sister, Janese Carnahan Mitchum of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Dr. James Carnahan of Reno, Nev.; and nine grandchildren.
Private family burial will be in Gridley-Biggs Cemetery.

Rose Richmond
FRESNO - Private services were held for Rose G. Richmond, 89, of Fresno, a retired Chico State University food service employee.
She died on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002.
Survivors include a niece, Gloria Lopez.
Whitehurst Chapel of Fresno handled arrangements.
Thomas Woodward
OROVILLE - A memorial service for Oroville resident Thomas Ernest Woodward is set for 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 8, at Ramsey-Newton-Bracewell Funeral Directors on Robinson Street in Oroville.
Woodward, 85, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at an Oroville care home.
He was born
June 29, 1916 in Spokane, Wash. He moved to Montana at a young age.
During World War II, Woodward was a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, establishing radar systems. He moved to Oroville in 1962.
Woodward was a private businessman in Montana and California dealing in farm equipment, automobiles and mobile homes for more than 50 years. He was a dealer at Tom's Mobile Homes in Oroville for 25 years and retired in 1996. People will remember him for his "little Metro convertable."
He was preceded in death by his wife, "Dee" Woodward in 1997. Survivors include a daughter, Tommie Dee Rinehart of Oroville; a brother, James of Deer Lodge, Montana; two grandsons and two great-granddaughters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Butte County Chapter of the SPCA in care of the funeral home which is handling the arrangements.
