Joyce W. Olson
Joyce W. Olson, 82, of Salinas, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born
Oct. 8, 1919, in Madera and lived in Salinas for 60 years. She was a homemaker. She graduated from Watsonville High School and Hartnell College.
She was a volunteer at John Steinbeck House on Central Avenue in Salinas and enjoyed doing needlepoint. She also was a volunteer at the YWCA in Watsonville.
Memberships: Salinas Valley Cow Bells, Valley Guild, and charter member of National Steinbeck Center.
Survivors: Husband of 60 years, Everett Olson of Salinas; son, Kevin Olson of Prunedale; sister, Wilma Cozzehs of Watsonville; and grandsons, Nicholas Olson and Parker Olson, both of Prunedale.
Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 11, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the mortuary.
Burial: Following at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park in Watsonville.

Evelyn Bessie Walsh
Evelyn Bessie Walsh, 85, of Modesto, died of natural causes Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Vintage Faire Nursing Home in Modesto.
She was born
in Murray County, Okla., and lived in Modesto for 30 years. She was a homemaker for 65 years.
Survivors: Sons, Norman Walsh and Denton Walsh, both of Salinas, and David Walsh of Modesto; brother, Lavern Loyd of Dinuba; sister, Margie Bostic of Porterville; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m., today, Dec. 11, at Whitehurst, Norton and Dias, Turlock.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the mortuary.
Burial: Turlock Memorial Park.
Adelaide Delores Mello
Adelaide Delores Mello, 87, of Watsonville, died May 17, 2001, in Watsonville.
She was born
in New Bedford, Mass., and moved to the Santa Cruz area in 1948. She and her business partner owned and operated Sil Mel Bridal Fashions on Mission Street in Santa Cruz for 25 years. She lived in Palm Springs for a time and moved back to the Watsonville/Aromas area to be near her son and daughter.
Her family will forever recall her love for the outdoors. She was quite skilled at fishing and enjoyed annual fishing trips to Trinity Alps.
A talented shuffleboard player, she won the California State Seniors Shuffleboard Championship.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Mello.
Survivors: Daughter, Betty Bakich Righello of Salinas; son, John Mello of Aptos; sisters, Zelda Marquez of Modesto and Mary Pinheiro of Atwater; brother, Charlie Lemos of Capitola; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services: A private committal will take place at Hills Ferry Cemetery in Newman, where she will be buried next to her husband, John Mello.
Arrangements: Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel in Santa Cruz.
Memorials: Preferred to the Cardiac Department of the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.
Robert 'Bob' Leslie Grainger
Robert "Bob" Leslie Grainger, 77, of Salinas, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born
in Lincoln, Neb., and lived in Salinas for 67 years. He was a farmer and produce grower. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1941 and was a member of the champion Cowboy football team. He attended Stanford University and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He returned to Salinas after the war in 1945 and entered the farming business with his late uncle, W.B. Grainger. He later started his own farming business, Grainger Farmers Inc., and retired in 1994. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and duck hunting with his Labrador retriever.
Military Service: He was a B-29 pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He flew 27 missions in the South Pacific and held the rank of first lieutenant. He received the Air Medal and three Oak Leaf Clusters.
Memberships: Past president of the Salinas Gun Club, past president of the California Rodeo Association, past exalted ruler of Elks Lodge No. 614 in Salinas, charter member of the Corral de Tierra Country Club, head of Boy Scout and Eagle Board of Review, member of First Presbyterian Church in Salinas, chairman of Grower-Shipper Vegetable Association, chairman of the board of Western Growers Association, board member of United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association.
Survivors: wife of 54 years, Sally Grainger; sons, William L. Grainger of Salinas, Joseph C. Grainger of Salinas and John R. Grainger of Carmel; sisters, Olive Bundgard of Salinas and Lesley Browne of Lincoln, Neb.; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Services: Memorial services 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 11, at First Presbyterian Church, 830 Padre Drive, Salinas.
Burial: Private family burial at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Soon Ye Song
Soon Ye Song, 95, of Seaside, died of natural causes Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at Hospice House.
She was born
in Seoul, South Korea, and lived in Seaside for 46 years.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, watching videos, sewing, playing cards and taking trips to Reno, Nev. Her husband, Bong Song, preceded her in death in 1979.

James David Emberson
James David Emberson, 61, of Willits, died following a lengthy illness Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at the Sun Ridge Care Center Convalescent Home in Willits.
He was born
in Salinas, but had lived in Willits for more than 25 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Myrtle Emberson, and a brother, Mylo Emberson.
Survivors: Sons Roy and Jim Emberson, both of Yerington, Nev., and Robert Emberson of Lodi; sister Virginia Alexander of Salinas; brother Kenneth Emberson of Arroyo Seco; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Johnie Ray Haynes
Johnie Ray Haynes, 82, of Salinas, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Hospice House in Monterey after a brief illness.
He was born
in Iredell, Texas, and lived in Salinas for 40 years. He was the retired owner/operator of Johnies In and Out restaurant in Seaside for 17 years. and was employed with Cinderella Carpets for the last 20 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also was an active boxer during his Navy career.
Military service: U.S. Navy during World War II and was a chief commissary officer.
Memberships: Salinas Moose Lodge Chapter 658 and Salinas American Legion Post 31.

Rex C. Martin
Rex C. Martin, 70, of Salinas and Marina, died of natural causes Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care Center in Salinas.
He was born
in Oklahoma and lived in Salinas for most of his life. He also lived in Marina for a time. He was a printer setter with The Californian and Monterey Herald.
His sister, Ann Eaton, preceded him in death.
Memberships: Madonna Del Sasso Catholic Church.
Survivors: Jennie (Gene) Blakeman of Salinas; son, Wayne Martin of Arizona; sister, Virginia Moss of Arkansas; granddaughter, Janene Benny of Salinas; and one great-grandson.

James Sheldon Peckham
James Sheldon Peckham, 66, of Watsonville, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Santa Cruz Health Care Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born
in Watsonville and was a lifelong resident. He farmed in Watsonville for 40 years on his Peckham Road ranch. He was a member of the pioneer Peckham family who arrived in Pajaro Valley in 1840. He was a graduate of Watsonville High School where he was president of the Future Farmers of America for two years. He attended California State University, Fresno, for two years before joining the Army.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Pat Firebaugh.
Military service: U.S. Army.

Rolando 'Oly' Aguilar Valero
Rolando "Oly" Aguilar Valero, 64, of Marina, died of pneumonia Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center.
He was born
in Rosario Cavite, Philippines, lived in Monterey County for 31 years and in Marina for 28 years. He was a cook with Old Capitol Club in Monterey for seven years. He enjoyed watching baseball, boxing and various sports, horse races at the Monterey Fairgrounds, fishing and gardening and watching his grandchildren grow.
Military service: Retired U.S. Coast Guard after 20 years of service.
Survivors: Wife of 43 years, Elisa Valero of Marina; children, Cecilia V. Gonzales of Sacramento and Christina V. Rondez and Eddie S. Valero, both of Marina; siblings, Ernesto Valero of Las Vegas, Mayumi DeCastro of National City, Luciano Valero Jr., Norma V. Nocon, Leonida V. Ernestine F. Aviles
Ernestine F. Aviles, 59, of Salinas, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at her home.
She was born
in Tucson, Ariz., and lived in Salinas for 59 years. She was a housekeeper and nurse's aide with Casa Serena Convalescent Hospital for seven years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Heraclio Aviles, who died Dec. 3, 2000.
Memberships: Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors: Sons, Ralph Freilinger and Harry Gamotan, both of Salinas; sisters, Margaret Di Giancomo of Fontana and Gloria Mijkives of Cypress; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
