Connie "Consuelo" Salas, 72, of Salinas, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born
in Del Rio, Texas, and lived in Salinas for 62 years. She was a trimmer with Artichoke Industries. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and cooking.

Survivors: Husband, Rafael Gregorio Salas of Salinas; daughters, Margie Ceja of Newport News, Va., Elizabeth Perez, Angie Ramos and Yolanda Martin, all of Salinas, and Belinda Pacheco of Sylmar; sons, David Rodriguez and Ralph Salas Jr., both of Salinas; sister, Herminia Morellon of San Jose; brothers, Frank Rodriguez and Rudy Rodriguez, both of Salinas; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Fred 'Freddie' Vosti Jr.
Fred "Freddie" Vosti Jr., 91, of Bon Wier, Texas, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at Jasper Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Texas, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Vosti was born
in Gonzales and lived there until he relocated to Texas in 1996. He was a self-employed dairyman and farmer who also worked for Bruce Church Co., Chicago Printed String Co. and as a maintenance man at Thor Electronics, the job he retired from.
He was actively involved in local sports organizations in the late '40s and early '50s, especially baseball and basketball. His hobbies included bowling and photography and he photographed many local people and events. He processed and developed his own prints. He also enjoyed spending time with family and his children.

Alexis Guadalupe Escobar, a Salinas infant, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at the Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.
He was born
July 17, 2001.
Survivors: Parents Alejandro and Aria Escobar of Salinas; sisters, Alma and Jo Anna Escobar of Salinas; brother, Alejandro Escobar Jr. of Salinas; grandparents Hector Buelna and Juana Morales, both of Mexico; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Ann E. Young
Ann E. Young, 53, of Seaside, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Hospice House in Monterey after a lengthy illness.
She was born
in Monterey and was a lifelong resident of the Monterey Peninsula. She was a florist and nursery worker. She attended local schools and graduated from University of California, Irvine. She enjoyed gardening and collecting antiques.
Survivors: Sons, Chris Young of Seaside and Noah Young of Pacific Grove.

Apolonia F. Ochoa
Apolonia F. Ochoa, 78, of Greenfield, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born
in Hacienda de la Luz, Michoacan, Mexico, and lived in Greenfield for 33 years. He was a retired labor foreman for McCarthy Farms.
He enjoyed gardening, building crafts and playing dominoes, his favorite game. He enjoyed spending time with family and had a special knack for picking nicknames for people. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jesus Ochoa, and a sister, Maria Ochoa.
Survivors: Wife, Carmel Ochoa of Greenfield; son, Andres Ochoa of King City; daughters, Guadalupe Madueno of San Bernardino, Guillermina Codova of Yuma, Ariz., Esther Diaz of King City, and Graciela Zarco, Carmen Ochoa, and Olivia Ochoa, all of Greenfield; brothers, Jose Ochoa of Tijuana, Mexico, and Salvador Ochoa; sister, Dolores Martinez of Mexicali, Mexico; 22 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Smithey
Kenneth Smithey, 78, of Butler, Mo., died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
He was born
in Worland, Mo., and lived in Butler. He worked in pharmacy sales with Tull's Rexall Drug Store and Rexall Chemical Co., and later worked in clothing sales for Levy's Mercantile Co. He was an avid gardener, taking great pride and care for his yard, plants and flowers. He was an admirable athlete in his early years, known for excelling in tennis as well as basketball and other sports. His father preceded him in death.
Military service: U.S. Navy during World War II.

Lydia Anna Staley
Lydia Anna Staley, 81, of King City, died at her home Thursday, May 24, 2001.
She was born
in The Grove, Texas. She was a resident of Porterville since 1943. She moved to King City in 1999 to be closer to her daughter. While in Porterville, Lydia and her husband owned and operated the Tea Pot Dome Café, a local favorite for a great meal, friendly fun and her famous Tea Pot salad dressing. She will be remembered as a loyal friend. She derived great joy from her grandchildren and great-granddaughters and was a fan of the Anaheim Angels.
Her husband, Leo, and two sons, Harold and Sam, preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her twin sister, Lily Story of Porterville, as well as 11 other brothers and sisters.
Memberships: Zion Lutheran Church in Terra Bella and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

Delphia 'Jean' Richards-McCain
Delphia "Jean" Richards-McCain, 73, of Chico, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at a Chico hospital.
She was born
in Jonesboro, Ark., was raised and educated in Tyronza, Ark., lived in Monterey County for many years and was a former Salinas resident. While in Salinas, she worked for J.C. Penney Co. Following her retirement in 1990, she moved to Chico. She married Eugene Richards in 1948. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and homemaking.
Survivors: Daughters, Debra Ottone of Salinas and Cynthia Ottone of Chico; son, Gary Richards of Ohio; sister, Gwen Williams of Red Bluff; and eight grandchildren.

Margarito Roman
Margarito Roman, 84, of Castroville, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at his home after an illness.
He was born
in Mexicali, Mexico, and lived in Castroville for 50 years. He was self-employed as a farm laborer. He was preceded in death by his sister, Femia Roman, and brothers, Blas and Martin Roman.
Memberships: Guadalupana Catholic Association, San Pablo de Colores in Watsonville and Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church.

Arnold B. Conley Sr.
Arnold B. Conley Sr., 92, of Sonora, died of natural causes Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Modesto.
He was born
in Hillsboro, Ore., and lived in Sonora for 21 years. He was a master mechanic with Spreckels Sugar Co. in Spreckels for 41 years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia, in 1963.
Survivors: Son, Arnold "Skip" Conley Jr. of Jamestown; grandchildren, Arnold Conley III of Degraff, Ohio, Carol Edwards of Sonora and Michael Arnold Sr. of Sacramento; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

John P. Felshaw
John P. Felshaw, 44, of Salinas, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in Salinas.
He was born
in Salinas and was a lifelong resident. He worked in the Salinas area as a truck loader and was a volunteer with Dorothy's Kitchen where he helped feed the homeless for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman. He was preceded in death by his father, William Felshaw, in 1978.

Kenneth 'Kenny' R. Wooten
Kenneth "Kenny" R. Wooten, 60, of Salinas, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001 at the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born
in Elko, Nev., and had lived in Salinas for 55 years. He was a graduate of Salinas High School and a self-employed carpet layer in the Salinas area for 38 years.
Survivors: Sons, Brad Wooten of Paso Robles and Chad Wooten of Salinas; grandchildren, Jake, Hannah, Monica, Natalie, Sierra, Madison and Hailey.
