Shelby L. Carroll

A funeral for Shelby L. Carroll, 66, of Reno, will be 1 p.m. Friday at McCune Garden Chapel. Burial will follow at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mr. Carroll died Dec. 21, 2000, in Reno, after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 10, 1934, in Broken Arrow, Okla., he lived in Allendale for the past 45 years before moving to Reno two years ago. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force and 32 years in civil service as an aircraft mechanic and crew chief. He was active in real estate development, an avid fisherman, and he enjoyed collecting and restoring classic cars. He was loved and respected by numerous friends and family.

Mr. Carroll is survived by his mother, Ethel of Porterville; wife, Ila of Weaverville; son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Sally of Allendale; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Steve Freeman of Red Bluff; granddaughter, Stephanie Freeman of Red Bluff; great-granddaughter, Alexis Freeman of Red Bluff; brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Teddi of Porterville; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Rev. Richard Russell of Warner Robins, Ga.; and sister, Pauline Mayo of Concord. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert, in 1977, his brother, Mack, in 1994, and his sister, Margie Mayo, in 1987.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1652 W. Texas St., Suite 110, Fairfield, 94533.

Helene Marguerite-Hankins LaPlante

A Memorial Mass for Helene Marguerite-Hankins LaPlante, 80, of Suisun will be 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield. Disposition will be private.

Mrs. LaPlante died Dec. 21, 2000, at NorthBay Medical Center.

Born Jan. 18, 1920, in Great Falls, Mont., she lived in the Fairfield and Suisun area since 1957. A descendent of two Oregon pioneering families, she attended schools in Portland and Klamath Falls, Ore. She attended Gonzaga University and graduated from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Spokane, Wash. During World War II, she worked at the Naval Shipyards in Portland. She was a registered nurse since 1946. She moved to Fairfield in 1957 and worked at Intercommunity Hospital and for the Travis Unified School District. She was also a private duty nurse for local families. She was an adult leader for Girls Scouts and Catholic Youth Organization. She was a loving wife of 53 years, and loving mother and grandmother.

Mrs. LaPlante is survived by her husband of 53 years, Frank LaPlante of Suisun; daughters and sons-in-law Kathleen LaPlante and Jay Johnstone of Fairfield, Maureen and Ian McLean of Letham Grange, Angus, Scotland, Shannon and Collin King of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and Mollie and Christer Lovmark of Suisun; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Joan Hooper of Albany; grandchildren Sherna and Carmen Perez of Oakland, Megan of Suisun, Emily Johnstone of Fairfield, Karina and Rachel McLean of Letham Grange, Rose and Lily Hooper of Albany, Joshua King of Brisbane; great-grandchild, Carmen Perez of Oakland; and brothers Ken Hankins of Oregon and Mike Hankins of Costa Rica.

Donations may be made to the donor's charity of choice, or Child Haven in Fairfield.

Arrangements are being handled by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Michael Wayne Spadorcio

A funeral for Michael Wayne Spadorcio, 38, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Friday at Vaca Hills Chapel. Burial will be at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

Mr. Spadorcio died Dec. 23, 2000, at his home in Vacaville after a sudden illness.

Born Sept. 27, 1962, in Anaheim, he moved to the area 25 years ago. He worked as a truck driver. He loved fishing, coaching Little League and spending time with his family.

Mr. Spadorcio is survived by his wife, Cynthia of Vacaville; sons, Michael of Vacaville, and Jonathan of Napa; daughter, Ana of Vacaville; parents, Jerry of Vacaville and Evelyn Gross of Fairfield; and brothers, Danny of Vacaville and Guy of Fairfield.

Francis A. Darrell

A memorial service for Francis A. Darrell, also known as "Uncle Frank," will be 6 p.m. Friday at Fairfield Funeral Home.

Mr. Darrell died Dec. 25, 2000, from heart failure at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo.

Born Sept. 15, 1922, in Whitestone, N.Y., he lived in Fairfield for the past 32 years. He was a sheet metal technician at Alameda Naval Air Station before pursuing his favorite pastime of golf. He retired from the California Department of Corrections after 13 years of service and had also retired from the U.S. Air Force as a technical sergeant after serving in World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Darrell is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan of Fairfield; daughter, Valerie of Redlands; daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and David Leister of Vacaville and Jill and Steve Kadin of Rohnert Park; and grandchildren, Alan and Cristina, both of Long Beach, Mark Leister of Virginia, Michael Leister of Vacaville, and Jessica, Jeffrey and Lyndsey Kadin, all of Rohnert Park. He also has numerous niece, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the SPCA Haven of Solano County.

Cleo Anderson Fowler

A Mass of Christian Burial for Cleo Anderson Fowler, 87, of Fairfield will be noon Friday at Solano Valley Mortuary. The Rev. Michael Downey will officiate. Burial will be at Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon before the services at the mortuary.

Mrs. Fowler died Dec. 24, 2000, at her home in Fairfield after a long illness.

Born Jan. 21, 1913, in Greenville, Miss., she lived in Fairfield for the past 13 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Mrs. Fowler is survived by her daughter-in-law, Wilda R. Robinson-Fowler of Fairfield; son, Lester Fowler Jr. of Fairfield; brother, Charles L. Anderson of Vicksburg, Miss.; grandchildren, Sharon Menefee of Sacramento and Jason E. Fowler of Tampa, Fla.; and great-grandchildren, Michael and Maya Menefee, both of Sacramento.

Larry Leroy Owen

A memorial service for Larry Leroy Owen, 52, of Woodland will be 10 a.m. Friday at Kraft Bros. Chapel in Woodland.

Mr. Owen died Dec. 26, 2000.

Born March 20, 1948, in Vallejo, he attended school in Vallejo, but graduated from Tooele High School in Tooele, Utah. He worked for 15 years as a cashier in a canned-food warehouse.

Mr. Owen is survived by his wife, Tina Ann Mohr of Woodland; children, Mary Ann of Dixon, Alice of Cody, Wyo., and Larry Lee, who is in the U.S. Army; father, Theodore of Vacaville; and brothers, Robert of Grand Terrace, and Daniel of Vacaville. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice M. Smith Owen.

Cristian Trujillo Perez

A funeral mass for Cristian Trujillo Perez, an infant, of Fairfield will be 2 p.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The Rev. Umberto Penunuri will officiate. Interment will be at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. today at the church, with a rosary to be recited at 6 p.m.

Cristian died Dec. 24, 2000, in Fairfield after a short illness.

Born Dec. 5, 2000, in Fairfield, he lived 19 days.

Cristian is survived by his parents, Jesus Trujillo and Maria Perez, both of Fairfield; sisters, Isabel, Jessica and Teresa, all of Fairfield; maternal grandmother, Esperanza Aredondo of Michoacan, Mexico; and paternal grandfather, Jesus Trujillo of Michoacan.

Laura Anne Stirnitzke

A memorial service for Laura Anne Stirnitzke, 45, of Vacaville will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Vaca Hills Chapel. Pastor Eric Skovgaard will officiate. Inurnment will be in Bellevue, Neb.

Mrs. Stirnitzke died Dec. 23, 2000, at her home in Vacaville after a long illness.

Born Oct. 15, 1955, on Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., she lived in Vacaville for the past seven years. She worked as an administrator for Wal-Mart. She was a member of the "Bosom Buddies" at David Grant Medical Center.

Mrs. Stirnitzke is survived by her husband, Thomas of Vacaville; daughter, Julie of Tucson, Ariz.; son, Patrick of North Carolina; mother, Shirley Juber, of South Dakota; grandmother, Margaret Juber of Norwalk; sisters, Diana Berger of Bellevue, Christine McLean of Vacaville, Pamela Jacobsen of Iowa, and Bonnie Sanchez of Bellevue; and brothers, Brian Juber of Bellevue and Daryll Juber of Lincoln, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her father, Duane Juber of South Dakota.

Mary Atkins Clayton

A memorial service for Mary Atkins Clayton, 86, of Vacaville will be held at a later date. Inurnment was private.

Mrs. Clayton died Dec. 24, 2000, at Vaca Valley Hospital after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 2, 1914, in San Francisco, she moved to Leisure Town two years ago. She was a former city planner for the city of Redwood City. She was a member for 20 years of the California Women for Agriculture, and the Farm Bureau. She was also a docent for Ano Nuevo State Park.

Mrs. Clayton is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Skip and Trisha of Vacaville; sisters, Dorothy Hudson of Redwood Valley, Susan deFremery of Santa Rosa, Anne Robinson of Redwood City and Ruth Osborn of Davis; brother, Arthur Atkins of Monterey Park; grandchildren, Jennifer Kim and Lara Lawrence, both of Marina and Tom of Oakland and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be sent to South Coast Childrens Services, Inc., 356 Stage Rd., Pescadero, 94060.

Arrangements were handled by Vaca Hills Chapel.

Henry Nicholas Van-Assen

A memorial service for Henry Nicholas Van-Assen, 71, of Fairfield will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 6, in Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Fairmont Memorial Park.

Mr. Van-Assen died Dec. 16, 2000, in Fairfield after a short illness.

Born Aug. 23, 1929, in Ripon, he lived in Fairfield for 10 years. He completed 12 years of education, worked 50 years in the printing business for F.P. Label Company, and was a sergeant in the Air Force from 1947 to 1951. He was a member of the American Legion and the Native Sons of California.

Mr. Van-Assen is survived by his stepchildren, Anne Marie Pacheco of Fairfield, Joanne Pacheco of Virginia, Edward Lebrocquy of Suisun, Michael Pacheco of Sacramento and James Pacheco of Boston, Ma.; brothers, Gerrit of Turlock and William of Ripon; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; a brother, John, and sister, Geraldine Curry.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Society of Solano County, 817 Missouri St., No. 4, Fairfield, 94533.

Ernest Joseph Arnold

A private memorial service was held for Ernest Joseph Arnold, USN (Ret) 86, of Vacaville. His ashes will be scattered at sea.

Mr. Arnold died Nov. 17, 2000, quietly.

Born Oct. 31, 1914, in Keota, Okla., he resided in Vacaville since 1953. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a chief warrant officer in 1953. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater aboard various warships, spent two years in American Samoa as a medical officer, and during WWII participated in the invasion of Okinawa. His younger brother was killed aboard the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor. He completed a 20-year career as a medical technician with the California Medical Facility. He enjoyed fishing for salmon off the coast of Fort Bragg and Bodega Bay and in Southeastern Alaska he once landed a 165-pound halibut. He lost his wife, Ruby, to cancer in 1969.

Mr. Arnold is survived by his wife of 27 years, Blanche; daughters, Jewell Archuleta of Sacramento and Judy Dewey of the Bahamas; stepdaughters, (by Ruby), Joyce Ison of Blackfoot, Idaho and Ardella Nevins of Spokane, Wash.; granddaughter, SanDee Sausville of Newport, Wash.; stepchildren (by Blanche) Marian Takken Skoog of Vacaville, Robert Takken of San Luis Obispo, Martha Takken McQueary of Lexington, Ky. and Laurel Love of Roseville. In addition, he is survived by granddaughter, Tami McKay of Boulder City, Nev.; great-granddaughter Skylar McKay, and several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren from both Ruby's and Blanche's families.

The family invites anyone wishing to honor his memory to make a donation in his name to the National World War II Memorial, 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Suite 501, Arlington, Va. 22201.

Crystal Deane Shake Burns

A funeral service for Crystal Deane Shake Burns, 93, of Vacaville will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in McCune Garden Chapel.

Pastor Ted Parks will preside. Interment will follow at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mrs. Burns died Dec. 26, 2000 in Vacaville.

Born Feb. 12, 1907 in Monrovia, Ind., she resided in Vacaville since 1976. She married Parker B. Burns, Sr. in Indiana in 1926 where they lived until moving to Texas and later to Albuquerque, N.M. She worked for the City of Albuquerque in the Water Department until her retirement. She and her husband moved to Vacaville in 1976 where she was active in the Church of Christ and the Senior Center. She found great joy in spending time with her family.

Mrs. Burns is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Keeling of Albuquerque; sons and daughters-in-law, Parker and Peggy and David and Margie, all of Vacaville; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Ivalene Sherrill of Denton, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Parker, in 1985.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in McCune Garden Chapel.

Contributions may be made to Mrs. Burn's memory to: Albuquerque Christian Children's Home, 5700 Winter Haven Road, NW; Albuquerque, N.M. 87120 or to the donor's favorite charity.

Barbara 'Darlene' Duran

A memorial service for Barbara "Darlene" Duran, 55, of Vacaville will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Church of Christ.

Rudy Rogers will officiate.

Mrs. Duran died Dec. 26, 2000, in her home after a sudden illness.

Born Dec. 13, 1945, in San Rafael, she moved to the area 13 years ago. She was a homemaker and a home health-care provider. She loved spending time with family and friends, and loved music. She had a great sense of humor and was the most generous person anyone knew.

Mrs. Duran is survived by her husband, Roland; children, Rowlanda Marin and Jessie Linda Roberto; grandchildren, Jordan and Jasmine; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends from the Bay Area.

Memorial contributions may be made to Church of Christ.
