Wanda Lee Hernandez-Fischer
A funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Nadeau Family Funeral Home for Wanda Lee Hernandez-Fischer, 51, of Vacaville. Interment will follow in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
Mrs. Hernandez-Fischer died June 30, 2000, at her home in Vacaville after a brief illness.
She was born June 17, 1949, in Manila, the Philippines. She had been a project administrator, most recently employed with Hearn Construction in Vacaville. She also was in the Navy for a brief period of time. She enjoyed reading, research and traveling.
Survivors include her son, James Waldman of Vacaville; daughter, Samantha Lyn Waldman of Vacaville; fiance, Olaf Fischer of Vacaville; mother; Annie S. McCaughan of Vacaville; father and stepmother, Jess and Emma Hernandez of New Braunsfield, Texas; sisters, Sandra A. Crouch of Placerville, Linda J. Hernandez of Pittsburg, Brenda J. Smith of Dixon, Zenona J. Hernandez of Fairfield, Margaret R. Hartwell of El Sobrante, Anne V. Hernandez of Hercules, and Janice M. Hernandez of Redmond, Wash.; brother, Jesse S. Hernandez of Marina Del Rey and William R. Hernandez of San Francisco.
Barbara Jefferson
A funeral for Barbara Jefferson of Fairfield will be 11 a.m. Monday at True Love Baptist Church.
Pastor Mark Johnson of Flames of Fire Outreach Ministry will officiate. Interment will be at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
Mrs. Jefferson died June 28, 2000, in Fairfield after a short illness.
Born in Amite, La., she lived in Vacaville for 21 years. She was employed by Solano Works Services as a case manager for five years. She was a member of Flames of Fire Outreach Ministry. She enjoyed sewing, drawing and poetry.
Mrs. Jefferson is survived by her husband, Samuel of Vacaville; daughter, Ayanna of Vacaville; son and daughter-in-law, Savelle and Veronica of Vacaville; sisters, Sadie Gibson, Janie Diane Landrum and Donna Watson, all of New Orleans; brother, Huey Young of Naugatuck, Conn.; and grandchildren, Samara and Savelle Jr. of Vacaville and Brittaney of Fairfield.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at True Love Baptist Church.
Arrangements were handled by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
Amber Sue Leat
A memorial service for Amber Sue Leat, 18, of Dixon will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Davis. Glen Snyder will officiate. Inurnment will be at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
Ms. Leat died on June 30, 2000, in Sacramento.
Born on April 15, 1982, in Sacramento, she lived in Dixon all her life. She worked for the past two years at Solano Baking Co. in Dixon and had also worked at Chevy's Restaurant. She enjoyed music, shopping and just spending time with family and friends. She will be truly missed.
Ms. Leat is survived by her parents, David and Lynda of Dixon; grandparents, Mickey and Thelma of Yuba City; and grandmother, Clara Byer of Antioch. She also had numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Bruce Byer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that potential donors contact Dixon High School to contribute to a scholarship fund.
Olive Rose Peters
A memorial service for Olive Rose Peters, 99, of Fairfield, will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. Interment will be Friday in St. Stanislaus's Catholic Cemetery
in Modesto.
Mrs. Peters died June 29, 2000, in Laurel Creek Health Care Center after a short illness.
Born Sept. 22, 1900, in Manville, R.I., she lived in Fairfield for six months. Prior to that she lived in Modesto for 67 years.
She worked in the textile mills in Rhode Island, moved to San Francisco in 1928, and then moved to Modesto in 1932. She worked for Foremost Dairy in Modesto from 1945 to 1960 as a milk tester. She moved to Fairfield in January to be closer to her son.
Mrs. Peters is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Jean of Fairfield; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
Brian Thorpe
A memorial service for Brian Thorpe, 54, of Fairfield, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Fairfield Funeral Home. Inurnment will be private.
Mr. Thorpe died June 30, 2000, at his home after an illness.
Born Jan. 3, 1946, in Watsonville, he lived in Fairfield for 15 years. He served in the Marines during Vietnam, employed by Sterilizers Technical Specialists Inc.. He was an avid abalone diver.
Mr. Thorpe is survived by his wife, Mary of Fairfield; daughters, Theresa of Fairfield, Monique of San Francisco and Eden Ursin-Smith of Novato; sons, Patrich of Fairfield and Chance of Marin; grandson, Devin Ursin-Smith of Novato; and brothers, Harvey of Watsonville, John of Sacramento and James of Colorado.

Blanche Engle
A memorial service for Blanche Engle, 88, of Vacaville, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in McCune Garden Chapel. Inurnment will be private.
Mrs. Engle died June 30, 2000, in Vacaville.
Born Aug. 26, 1911, in Arkansas, she resided in Vacaville for 54 years. She worked in the Ammunition Factory during WWII, helped design the timer for the Manhatten Project; worked for the Vacaville Unified School District for 5 years as a physical education aide. She was a member of the Vacaville Art League.
Mrs. Engle is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald (Dan) and Mary of Vacaville; grandchildren, Donna Robinson of Vacaville, John Sisk of Kentucky and Tracy of Carlsbad; great-grandchildren, Troy Kennenberg of Galt, Misty Robinson of Vacaville and Kristopher Robinson of Lacey, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1985 and her daughter, Sally, in 1964.

Arie Jane Lyberg
No formal services will be held for Arie Jane Lyberg, 60, of Fairfield. Inurnment will be in Florida.
Born April 26, 1940, in Michigan, Ms. Lyberg died July 1, 2000, at home after a long illness.
She lived in Florida for several years before moving to Fairfield five years ago. She served in the United States Marines for several years and worked as a school bus driver in the Florida Keys School District.
Ms. Lyberg is survived by her brothers, Peter of Naples, Fla. and Matthew Lewis of Traverse City, Mich. and her longtime friend and caregiver, Cheryl Garnick of Fairfield.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Fairfield Funeral Home.
George Washington McCleese, Sr.
A funeral for George Washington McCleese, Sr. 70, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Colonial Chapels.
The Rev. Stanley Cornils will officiate. Burial will be in Sunrise Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. McCleese died July 1, 2000, in his home after a short illness.
Born April 17, 1930, in Kentucky, he had recently moved to Vacaville from Pollock Pines. He worked as an engineer for Pillsbury-Martinoni Engineering Co. for 15 years, retiring in 1979. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. McCleese is survived by his daughters, Michelle of Vacaville and Cindy Sergura of Esparto; sons, George Jr. of Woodland and John of Vacaville; son and daughter-in-law, Hardin and Linda of Iowa; mother, Hazel Bradford of Vacaville; sisters, Sophie Kellermand, Bonnie Wiskur and Linda Britt, all of Vacaville and Corrine Spencer of Vallejo; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m-9 p.m. Wednesday in Colonial Chapels.
Minnie Kathleen Schafer
A Catholic Prayer service for Minnie Kathleen Schafer, 75, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Nadeau Family Funeral Home. Father William Feeser will preside. Interment will be held Monday at 1:15 p.m. in the Paradise City Cemetery
in Paradise. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with a rosary at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Born July 10, 1924, in Mendocino, Mrs. Schafer died July 3, 2000, at NorthBay Medical Center after a long illness.
She worked as a food service employee for the Stockton Unified School District for 10 years.
Mrs. Schafer is survived by her daughters, Susan K. Meier of Vacaville and Debbie Walton of Victorville; son, Sonny of Stockton; sisters, Katherine Dutra of Martinez, Dolores Peters of Chico, and Louise Eanes of Grass Valley; brother, Tony Silva of Martinez; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Francis William Whitty
A Catholic Prayer Service for Francis William Whitty, 72, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Nadeau Family Funeral Home.
Father William Feeser of St. Mary's Catholic Church will officiate. Interment will be private in Fairmont Memorial Park.
Born on Dec. 4, 1927, in Boston, Mr. Whitty died at his home in Vacaville on July 1 after a long illness. He resided in Vacaville for the past 40 years.
Mr. Whitty had been a flight engineer with the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1967 with the rank of master sergeant after 23 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Margaret of Vacaville; daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Robert Smith of Suisun; daughter, Lindy Davis of Fairfield; and grandsons, Spencer and Colin Smith of Suisun, and Nick David of Fairfield.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Nadeau Family Funeral Home.
Lola DeVan
When hundreds at Vacaville's annual Sports Night fund-raiser in March gave Lola DeVan a standing ovation in honor of her 80th birthday, they had no idea it would be her grand send off.
Fittingly, the longtime Vacaville High School supporter wore an orange and black corsage that night, as the crowd rose and acknowledged her years of dedication to the school's athletics program.
On July 4, 2000, DeVan lost her short battle with colon cancer. She was 80.
Family members also found it fitting that she passed away on the Fourth of July, which was one of her favorite holidays.
"She went out with a bang," said Cheryle Apple, DeVan's oldest daughter.
Apple said her mother would have been decked out in her red, white and blue garb on Tuesday, but Wednesday would have again been donning the colors of her favorite school.
"Today, she'd be back in the orange and black," Apple said.
DeVan was one of the founding members of the Vacaville High School Quarterback Club, which is dedicated to raising funds for the football program.
"She was the Quarterback Club," said longtime friend Tom Mauldin, who attended Vacaville High School in the 1960s. "She really had an impact on a lot of us teen-aged boys back in the 60s. There's probably never been a bigger supporter of Vacaville High School athletics than Lola. I can't think of anyone who even comes close."
Longtime Vacaville High School football coach, Tom Zunino, said DeVan's presence will not be forgotten.
"Her presence was felt in all phases," Zunino said. "When I first got here she had some kids living with her because they needed a place to stay. She was just bigger than life. I never thought anything would happen to her."
While DeVan's death came quickly, Apple said the family is coping well with her passing.
"We wouldn't want her to not be able to just be living life to the fullest," Apple said. "Since that wasn't happening any longer, we're OK with this."
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 7. at McCune Garden Chapel. Pastor William Hausler will officiate. Interment will be at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
Born on March 15, 1920, in Almora, Minn., she lived in Vacaville for more than 50 years. She was co-owner of Vacaville Glass and Paint. She was also a member of the Soroptimist Club, Quarterback Club, Grange Club, Lions Club, Women of the Moose Lodge #134, and was an honorary member of the Isleton Fire Department. She loved bingo, bowling and Vacaville High School football.
DeVan is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryle and George Apple of Isleton, and Mary Jo and Bobby Trull of Modesto; son, Ralph of Vacaville; grandchildren, Regina Coe of Tracy, Hoot Apple of Isleton, Ryan Mauldin of Modesto, Kelly Ness of Modesto and Kyle and Dustin of Vacaville; and great-grandchildren, Ashley and Alexis Mauldin of Modesto, Kyle Coe of Tracy and Blake and Hunter Apple of Isleton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren, in 1989.
