Nick LaSorella

Part-time Sedona resident Nicholas Sorella died Oct. 23, 1999.

For the past 42 years Mr. Sorella made his home in both Sedona and Pebble Beach, Calif.

He was born in Chicago July 17, 1917 the eldest of four sons and one sister born to James and Louise LaSorella.

Mr. LaSorella was an investor and entrepreneur.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years Phyllis; a son, Brett; a brother, Vince of Montana and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the United States.

A memorial service is pending in Pebble Beach.

Contributions may be made to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula Cardiac Wellness Department, PO Box HH, Monterey, Calif. 93942.

Martha J. Vancely

Graveside services are scheduled for today at 2 p.m. in the Clear Creek Cemetery for Camp Verde resident Martha Vancely.

A family visitation is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. today at Westcott Funeral Home in Camp Verde.

Mrs. Vancely died Oct. 22, 1999 at the age of 58.

She was born Sept. 15, 1941.

Mrs. Vancely lived for many years in Oklahoma but moved to Camp Verde seven months ago.

She enjoyed crochet, art and painted landscapes.

Survivors include three daughters, Mildred Johnson Greenrock, Shirley May Place and Kay Taylor; three sons, Danny, Johnnie and Eddie Northern; a sister, Debra Porter; two brothers, Jerry and Donald Vancely; a niece, Hazel Durkey; 15 grandchildren and her good friend, Dora Graves.

Vincent Leo VanHorn

Arizona native and Camp Verde resident Vincent VanHorn died Oct. 22, 1999.

Memorial services have been held.

Mr. VanHorn was born Dec. 25, 1951, in Phoenix.

He was 47 years old.

Mr. VanHorn was a Verde River guide for 20 years and worked as a cement finisher.

He graduated from Tolleson High School and was a member of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include his wife Margaret, a sister, Toni VanHorn of Camp Verde and a brother, Bud Holland of Phoenix.

Mary Frances Mottos

A memorial mass is scheduled for today at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Cottonwood resident Mary Mottos. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Clarkdale.

Mrs. Mottos died Oct. 22, 1999 at the age of 69.

She was born in Montebello, Calif., but moved to Arizona when she was 8 years old.

Mrs. Mottos was a member of the Verde Valley Moose Lodge #1449.

She was a member of the congregation of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband Caesar Mattos; seven sisters; two brothers and many nieces and nephews.

Lauretta O'Connor

Cottonwood resident Lauretta O'Connor died Oct. 20, 1999.

A memorial service is scheduled for today at 10 a.m. in the Rio Verde Nursing Home.

Mrs. O'Connor was born Oct. 12, 1924 in Chicago, Ill.

She was 75 years old.

Mrs. O'Connor enjoyed macramé and other crafts.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard J. O'Connor; two daughters, Barbara Funseth of Wisconsin and Betty Dish of Washington; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Henry Dish Jr.

Louise M. Fincher

Longtime Cornville resident Louise M. Fincher died Oct. 22, 1999 in Flagstaff.

Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday in the Sedona Church of Christ with Charles Burke officiating the service.

Mrs. Fincher was born May 8, 1917 in Florence, Ala.

She was 82 years old.

An Arizona resident for more than 57 years, she lived with her family in Ajo for more than 40 years before moving to Cornville in 1984.

Mrs. Fincher worked for Consolidated Air and Phelps Dodge but was a homemaker most of her adult life.

She was a member of the Sedona Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jodie C. Fincher in 1998.

Survivors include two sons, Rodney M. Smith of Cottonwood and Ralph Michael Fincher of Mesa; a daughter, Cynthia Ann Rabe of Flagstaff; seven grandchildren, Robert Michael Fincher, William Michael Fincher, Jennifer Leanne Gray, Nicholas Ian Rabe, Myka Lynne Fincher, Matthew Epperly and Marissa Adeline Rabe and one-great-granddaughter, Kaylee Michaela Gray.

Donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2424 East. Lakin, Suite 9, Flagstaff 86001.

William E. Walker

Memorial services were held for Camp Verde resident William Walker.

Mr. Walker died Oct. 20, 1999 at the age of 42.

He was born March 4, 1957 in Aberdeen, Miss.

Mr. Walker was a retired automotive mechanic.

He moved to Arizona from Mississippi 32 years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Leslie; a daughter, Michelle Harrison of Camp Verde; two sons, Mat Harrison and Jerald Barnhart of Camp Verde; parents, Johnnie Menees and Charles Walker; three sisters, Lois Walker of Cottonwood, Donna Acosta of Florida and Janie Powers of Kansas City; two brothers, Michael Walker of Camp Verde and Chuck Walker of Cottonwood; his grandmother, Sara Killebrew and one grandchild.

Paul Dean Rice

A memorial mass is scheduled for Paul Rice of Lake Montezuma on Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Parish in Prescott.

Mr. Rice died Oct. 21, 1999 at the age of 67.

He worked as corporate secretary for the Salt River Project.

Mr. Rice graduated from the University of Arizona.

He was a past president of the Tempe Arts Center Board, the Tempe Community Council and the Salt River Project Employees Recreation Association. Mr. Rice served on the board of the Lake Montezuma Homeowners Association.

Mr. Rice was an avid amateur photographer and enjoyed golf and model railroads.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Whitney Rice; two daughters, Paula Jensen and Ann Rice of Phoenix; two sons, Joseph Rice of Phoenix and Christopher Rice of Prescott Valley; a sister, Una Powers of Mesa; five grandchildren, Whitney and Erik Jensen of Phoenix, Cole Armstrong and Brian and Teddy Rice of Chandler.

Donations may be made to the Arizona Sunset Care, c/o Adele Summer, 830 S. Main St., Suite 1B Cottonwood.

Irene Dillon

Cottonwood resident Irene Dillon died Oct. 22, 1999.

She was born June 30, 1917 in Whiting Ind.

Mrs. Dillon was 82 years old.

She retired as a chief operator for the former Mountain State Telephone Company.

Mrs. Dillon was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Her hobbies included sewing. She was well known for her quilting.

Survivors include two brothers, Roy Smith of Sun City and Bob Smith of Oregon; a sister, Nancy Lee of Buckeye; a son, Joseph Dillon of Phoenix; two daughters, Elizabeth Dillon of Tucson and Patricia Dillon of Cottonwood; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Westcott Funeral Home.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Northern Arizona Food Bank, PO Box 1399 Cottonwood 86326.

Edwin C. Johnson

Private family services are scheduled at the Westcott Funeral Home on Sunday for Cottonwood resident and World War II veteran Edwin Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was born in Brady, Mont., March 14, 1918.

He was 81 years old. He died October 16, 1999.

Mr. Johnson worked as a civil engineer. He moved from California to Arizona eight years ago.

Mr. Johnson was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion.

He enjoyed outdoor recreation including golf, fishing and camping.

Mr. Johnson and his wife, Anne, spent many years in the couple's cabin in California.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Anne; a son, Tim C. Johnson of Cottonwood; five sisters, Gudrun Oien and Viola Stokes of Montana; Wilma Pauli of Cornville, Gladys Keller of Oregon and Rachel Derr of Washington; two brothers, Melvin Johnson of Washington and Lenard Johnson of Montana and numerous nieces and nephews.

Audrey P. Muller

Cottonwood resident and homemaker Audrey Muller died Oct. 17, 1999 at the age of 92.

She was born in La Juane, Colo. June 28, 1907.

Graveside services were held yesterday at Mayer Cemetery.

Mrs. Muller moved to Mayer when she was just three months old and continued to reside in the community until 1996. She moved to Camp Verde three years ago to live with her daughter.

Mrs. Muller was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, John Emil Muller.

Survivors include her daughter, Babetta Bowman of Camp Verde; a son, James Muller of Camp Verde; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Syble V. Smith

Former Sedona resident Syble Smith died Oct. 16, 1999 in Oregon.

She was born in Haskell, Texas.

For many years, Mrs. Smith was an active member of the Humane Society of Sedona and several other animal welfare organizations.

Her husband, Clyde, preceded Mrs. Smith in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Harwood of Cottonwood.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cupig Acres, Inc., PO Box 194 Sedona 86339.

Private arrangements were held in Oregon.
