Roscoe M. Smith
Cottonwood resident Roscoe Smith died Aug. 15, 1999.
He was born Aug. 3, 1909 in Selma, Iowa.
Mr. Smith was 90 years old.
He was a machinist specializing in the repair of farm equipment.
Mr. Smith and his wife Myra moved to Arizona in 1951 from Iowa. They lived in Buckeye for many years before coming to Cottonwood in 1995.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Myra G. Smith; a son, Robert D. Smith of Texas; a daughter, Judy A. Hatch of Cottonwood; three grandsons, David and Steve Smith of Tennessee and Craig Nichols of Washington; two granddaughters, Tawni Lauer of West Virginia and Cheri Brown of Texas; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Private family services were held.
Minnie Octavia (Burrow) Heart
Cottonwood resident Minnie Heart died Aug. 15, 1999.
She was born in Blackwell, Texas Aug. 6, 1914.
Mrs. Heart was a graduate of a business school in Oklahoma.
She worked as a librarian in the Murphy and Longview Schools.
Mrs. Heart was a lifetime member of the Phoenix Jaycee's. She was honored in 1997 for her 40 years of service with the rodeo.
Survivors include a son, Frank C. Heart of Cornville; a daughter, Darlene Calvert-Smith of Cottonwood; four grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Heart.
Funeral services will be held Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. at the East Resthaven Mortuary followed by a burial service at East Resthaven Memorial Park.
George Blomgren
Private family services were held for George Blomgren of Cottonwood.
Mr. Blomgren died Aug. 13, 1999.
He was born Aug. 15, 1908 in Mitchell, Mont., the son of Simon and Kerstin (Soldin) Blomgren,
In 1974, Mr. Blomgren and his wife moved to the Verde Valley from Columbia Falls, Mont. While living in Montana, he worked as a foreman for the Anaconda Aluminum Company in the machine shop until his retirement in 1970.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Cottonwood, the Scottish Rite of Missoula, Mont. and the Royal Neighbors.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years Evelyn, three sisters, Ruth Bannes of Montana, Mildred Glidden and June Blunton of California and many nieces and nephews.
William Egbert Bullock
Funeral services for William Bullock are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Verde Valley Evangelical Free Church in Cottonwood.
Mr. Bullock died Aug. 13, 1999.
He was 66 years old.
Mr. Bullock was born in Cass City, Mich. Aug. 22, 1932.
He resided in Cottonwood and Dolores, Colo.
A retired building contractor, Mr. Bullock formerly worked with C&B Custom Homes and Gazelle Construction.
He was a charter member of the Verde Valley Evangelical Free Church.
Mr. Bullock was a life member of the North American Hunt Club and a member of the National Rifle Association.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and collected many trophies that will be donated to Young Life Lost Canyon Ranch Camp in Williams.
Mr. Bullock loved his family, building houses, watching basketball and riding his horse.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Beverly; a son, William Bert Bullock of Cottonwood; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Bullock of Cottonwood; a daughter, Janet Layfield of Cornville; his mother, Lila Bullock Noller; two sisters, Virginia Freeland and Elnora Redmond of Michigan; two grandsons, Jack Olson of Glendale and Patrick Bullock of Salt Lake City; two granddaughters, Angela Olson of Maricopa and Jennifer Bullock of Phoenix; three great-grandchildren, Melissa, Amber and Tasselhoff Olson and one step great-grandchild, Kaitlynd Bullock.

Ida Louise Scarcella
Cottonwood resident Ida Scarcella died Aug. 10, 1999.
Funeral services are scheduled for today at 9 a.m. in the Westcott Funeral Home followed by a burial at Valley View Cemetery.
Mrs. Scarcella was 80 years old.
She was born March 19,1919 in Enterprise, W.Va.
Mrs. Scarcella was a former school teacher.
She moved with her husband to Arizona six years ago from West Virginia.
Survivors include four sons, Richard Scarcella of Flagstaff, David Scarcella of Colorado, John Scarcella of Jerome and Mike Scarcella of Dallas; a brother, Melvin Colebank of California; a sister, Esther Book of Tennessee and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Scarcella was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Scarcella who died in 1997.
Opal Dee Rambo
A memorial service for Opal Dee Rambo of Clarkdale is scheduled for Aug. 21 at 11 a.m. in the Westcott Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rambo died Aug. 8, 1999 at the age of 80.
She was born in Knox County, Texas Oct. 23, 1918 to George and Blanche Murry.
Mrs. Rambo was raised on a farm and went to grade school in a three-room school house that served as a church on Sundays.
She was a graduate of Brownfield High School and was also a business school graduate.
During World War II Opal and her husband, Bob moved to California where she worked on aircraft as a "Rosie the Riveter."
During her 25 years in California she was a singer in the church choir, fiction writer, apartment and rooming house manager. She was also active in Girl Scouts, Little League and PTA.
An exceptional athlete, Mrs. Rambo was chosen for the U.S. Women's Volleyball Team for the Pan American Games. She was also a pitcher on a women's softball team.
Mrs. Rambo was a wonderful homemaker and an avid needle crafter.
While living in Cottonwood, she was well known as a western dance teacher. She was a good friend to many good people of the Verde Valley.
Mrs. Rambo was spiritually strong and used meditation for peace and greater understanding.
Mrs. Rambo was the loving wife to Bob Rambo for over 50 years.
Survivors include a son, Randall W. Rambo of California; a daughter, Susan L. Gallegos of California; two grandsons, Cruz A. and Raphael J. Gallegos of California; her mother, Blanche Murry of Texas and two brothers, Bud and Jay Murry of California.
Donations in Mrs. Rambo's name may be made to a favorite local charity.
John H. Beck
Camp Verde resident John Beck died May 31, 1999.
A memorial gathering will be held for family and friends at the Beck home, 2877 Salt Mine Road in Camp Verde, Saturday at 5 p.m.
Mr. Beck was born in Maplewood, Mo. April 15, 1916.
He was 83 years old.
Mr. Beck was a saddle maker and an iron worker.
He lived in Arizona for over 63 years and for 26 years Mr. Beck has resided in Camp Verde.
Mr. Beck was preceded in death by his son, Charles John Beck.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian Beck; six daughters, Billie Meador, Virginia Harvey, Donna Hetzel and Carolyn Beck of Arizona, Joy Wilson of Oklahoma and Cheryl Hoffman of California; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Beatriz R. Garcia
A funeral mass will be held Friday for Beatriz Garcia at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cottonwood at 11 a.m.. Father Bud Pelletier will be the celebrant and burial will follow in the Cottonwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Garcia died Aug. 6, 1999.
She was a native Arizonan born July 10, 1921.
Mrs. Garcia worked as a seamstress and enjoyed reading, knitting and cooking.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church.
Mrs. Garcia was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Contrerez Garcia.
Survivors include two sisters, Alicia R. de Cedano and Emerita R. de Placencia, both of Guadelajara, Mexico; seven nieces and one nephew.
Bradley Burr Lorton
Cottonwood resident Bradley Lorton died Aug. 6, 1999.
He was born Dec. 11, 1917 in Lacross, Wis.
Mr. Lorton served in the Army Air Corp. where he was an airplane mechanic. He was a recipient of the America Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was a former ranch surveyor.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Edith Lorton; a son, Mr. Kenneth M. Lorton of Flagstaff; two granddaughters, Shannon Chacon and Lynette Lorton of Flagstaff and a sister, Harlene Zemmer of Kingman.
Private services are pending.
John Kuenzli Crawford
Tucson resident John Kuenzli Crawford, 68, died July 25, 1999 while returning home by train from a summer trip.
He is survived by his wife Roberta; a sister, Barbara Myers; a sister-in-law, Lois Lewis; one aunt, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Crawford was preceded in death by his parents, Dean and Betty Crawford of Benson.
A graduate of Clarkdale High School, Mr. Crawford also attended the University of Arizona where he received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and a master of arts degree in urban planning. He attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He worked for the Los Angeles and Maricopa County Planning Departments before joining the City of Tucson Planning Department.
Mr. Crawford was a member of the American Planning Association and the American Institute of Certified Planners. He was a member and served on the board of directors of the Arizona Preservation Foundation. He also was a member of the Arizona Historical Society, the Jerome Historical Society, the Adobe Corral of Westerners International, the National Association of Rail Passengers, and the Arizona Rail Passengers Association.
Mr. Crawford was a prize-winning photographer, published poet and an amateur astronomer. He served as an Air Force navigator, stationed at Charleston, S.C.
He was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Tucson.
Memorial services were held Aug. 2 in the Chapel of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Tucson.
