Esther V. Stanley
Camp Verde resident Esther Stanley died July 13, 1999 at the age of 72.
Mrs. Stanley was born March 26, 1927 in Maywood, Ill.
She came to Arizona 20 years ago from Michigan with her husband Charles D. Stanley.
She is survived by her husband, Charles D. Stanley; a daughter, Janet Brown of Michigan; a son in law, Arthur Brown; a brother, Donald E. Kessel of California; two grandchildren, Charles and Tony Cummins of Michigan; five great-grandchildren, and two nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Wanda Montgomery.
Private family services were held.
Charles Vernon (Mac) McCarty
A visitation will be held for Cottonwood resident Charles McCarty today at Westcott Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m.
Mr. McCarty died July 15, 1999.
A Wake will be held at the family home at 841 Calle Medina in Clarkdale on Friday at 8 p.m. A funeral service at Westcott Funeral Home will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. followed by graveside services at Clarkdale Cemetery.
Mr. McCarty was born Jan. 14, 1927 in Hammond, Ind. to Marshall Jewell McCarty and Luberta Virginia Johnson of Illinois.
Mr. McCarty grew up on a farm in southern Illinois and moved to Phoenix in 1942. He attended North Phoenix High School and served in the Civil Air Patrol. He later served in the Navy in the South Pacific as a fire controlman and later as ashore patrolman in Manila during World War II.
Mr. McCarty was a member of the Methodist Church where he sang lead tenor in the choir. He was a popular square dance caller.
Mr. McCarty worked as a shipbuilder in San Diego and was a member of the International Association of Ironworkers Local 75 in Phoenix until 1978.
He worked for Cottonwood Oak Creek Elementary School in the Maintenance Department until his retirement in 1992.
An artist, Mr. McCarty was a sculptor in clay and iron, on canvas in oils, a writer and published poet. One of his sculptures was the focal point of the lobby at Carefree First Interstate Bank.
Mr. McCarty was a pilot and enjoyed stunt flying. He was also a rock collector and built his own passive solar house in Clarkdale.
He was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks and the International Order of Foresters. He also sponsored a child through Save the Children.
He was married to Audrey Claire Hentzell in 1949. She preceded him in death in 1998.
Survivors include two children, Marshall and Jennifer McCarty and six grandchildren, David, Amanda, and Katie McCarty, and Patricia, Bonny and Jeremy Hanan.
Many children and teens in the Cottonwood and Clarkdale area knew Mac as granddad. He was a friend to all of them.
Josephine N. Howard
Private services were held for Cottonwood resident and homemaker Josephine Howard.
Mrs. Howard died July 18, 1999 at the age of 82.
She was born in Seymour, Texas Dec. 3, 1916.
Survivors include a son, N.W. (Bud) Howard of Vermont; a daughter, Nancy Shoemaker of Flagstaff; a brother, J.D. Nichols of New Mexico; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Jack R. Kirschner
Cottonwood resident Jack Kirschner died June 29, 1999.
He was 75 years old.
Mr. Kirschner was born May 10, 1924 in St. Joseph, Mo.
He was employed with Quaker Oats as a miller for 40 years before retiring in 1976.
Mr. Kirschner formerly lived in Neosho, Mo. before he began his residency in Cottonwood in 1996.
During World War II he served in the United States Army, serving at Omaha Beach on D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Kirschner was a member of the Methodist Faith, Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, American Legion Post in Arizona and was a former member of the Pony Express Post #359.
He was married to Betty L. Tibbetts on Oct. 23, 1983.
Mr. Kirschner was preceded in death by his first wife, Katherine Smith; a brother, Sylvester "Buzzy" Kirschner and his parents, Sylvester and Blanch Romine Kirschner.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Tom and Roger Kirschner of Missouri; a step-son, Alan Martin of California; two step-daughters, Nancy Gore and Tracy McLaughlin of Missouri; a brother, Henry Kirschner of Illinois; one sister, Kathleen Hill of Missouri; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at the Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care in St. Joseph, Mo. Interment will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery.
Military services at the grave site will be under the auspices of Pony Express Post #359, and the American Legion.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care.
Memorial gifts may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Joyce Ann Garcia
Cottonwood resident Joyce Garcia died Aug. 18, 1999.
She was born April 26, 1947 in Kirksville, Mo.
Mrs. Garcia was a 40 year resident of Chino Valley and the Verde Valley Area where she worked as a home health aide.
Survivors include her sons, Ken Blankenship of Louisiana and Robert and David Blankenship of Cottonwood, Doug Blankenship of California, Tom Blankenship of Texas and Tony Garcia of Cottonwood; a daughter, Amanda Garcia of Cottonwood; two sisters, Janice Borin of Cottonwood and Jesse Moreno of Clarkdale; a brother, Johnny Shultz and four grandchildren.
Private family services were held.
Gloria Rosalie Osborn
Services are scheduled Saturday for Cornville resident Gloria Osborn at the Verde Valley Christian Church in Cottonwood at 2 p.m.
Ms. Osborn died Aug. 18, 1999 in Mesa.
She was 22 years old.
Ms. Osborn was born in Inssbruck, Austria, April 18, 1977.
She attended Oak Creek School in Cornville and Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood. She enjoyed traveling, writing, art and music. Her passion was spending time with her friends.
Survivors include her parents, David and Zenita Osborn of Cornville; a son, Jason; five brothers, Geoff Osborn of Flatgstaff, Chris Osborn of Cottonwood, Harley, Lenny and Raymond Conoboy of Cottonwood; one sister, Stephanie Osborn of Flagstaff; two grandmothers, Violet Ridgley of Cottonwood and Mae Osborn of Chino Valley, and grandfather, Ralph Osborn of Chino Valley.
Robert F. Owens
Veteran and Cottonwood resident Robert Owens died Aug. 18, 1999.
He was born March 7, 1924 in Fort Collins, Colo. to Arthur and Mary (Ayers) Owens.
Mr. Owens served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a longtime resident of Bellingham, Wash. He retired to Arizona in 1972.
At the conclusion of the war Mr. Owens worked as a logger, a millwright and a longshoreman. He also worked as a general building contractor in Whatcom and Skagit Counties.
Mr. Owens was a member of Carpenters Local 756.
While living in Washington, Mr. Owens enjoyed many years of hunting, camping and fishing. He spent his retirement years in Arizona pursuing his love of being a "rockhound" and exploring the remote areas of the Verde Valley.
Mr. Owens was a founding member of the Verde Village Home Owners Association in Cottonwood.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jenkins of Cottonwood; a brother, Loren Owens of Washington; a sister, Rosemary Smith of Washington; two daughters, June Darlene Russell of Washington and Paula P. Arbuckle of Washington; a son, David W. Owens of Washington; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his six brothers, Don, Harold, Ted, Bill, Russel and Louis Owens.
Private family services were held. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.
Eleanor Madeline Glendenning
A memorial service for Cottonwood resident Eleanor Glendenning is scheduled for Friday, 2 p.m. at the Westcott Funeral Home.
Mrs. Glendenning died Aug. 21, 1999 at the age of 84.
She was born Nov. 20, 1914 in Hartsdale, N.Y.
A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Glendenning and her husband, Kenneth also operated several businesses in New York. Together the couple operated the Scarsdale Business Service, the Public Stenographers Office in Scarsdale, N.Y and a summer resort called Fisherman's Haven. While living in Clayton, N.Y., Mrs. Glendenning also worked as a secretary.
She was a member of the Daughters of the Eastern Star and the 1st Beloved Queen-Joan of Arc Triangle Eastern Star in White Plains, N.Y..
Mrs. Glendenning was a past "Noble Grand" of the Thousand Island Rebecca Chapter in Clayton, N.Y.
In 1973 the Glendennings moved to Douglas where Eleanor was employed as an administrative secretary at the local hospital. In 1992, they moved to Cottonwood and Mrs. Glendenning served as a Red Cross Volunteer at the Verde Valley Medical Center.
She was dedicated to supporting her family and enjoyed gardening, baking, crocheting, knitting, sewing, socializing and homemaking. Mrs. Glendenning's hand crafts were recognized at many county and state fairs where she won many awards and ribbons.
She will be dearly missed by her family and all those who knew her.
Mrs. Glendenning was preceded in death last January by her husband of 64 years, Kenneth S. Glendenning.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth B. Glendenning of New York; Frederick S. Glendenning of Glendale and David L. Glendenning of Cottonwood; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Stroke Survivors Support Group at Verde Valley Medical Center, 201 S. Willard Street, Cottonwood 86326.
Louise K. Justus Hubbs
A funeral service for Cottonwood resident Louise Hubbs is scheduled for today at 2 p.m. at Westcott Funeral Home The Rev. John Davis will conduct the services. A visitation will precede the service at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at the Valley View Cemetery
in Clarkdale.
Mrs. Hubbs died Aug. 21, 1999 at the age of 76.
She was born Feb. 8, 1923 in Clinton, Okla. to Charles and Izola (Adkins) Justus.
A homemaker, Mrs. Hubbs loved flowers and gardening.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Eugene V. Hubbs; a son, Clinton Hubbs of Alabama; two daughters, Patricia Wright of Mesa and Shirley Rennie of Clarkdale; two sisters, Bonnie DeLucia of Hawaii and Pauline Hightower of Oklahoma; a brother, Bob Justus of Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Vallie G. Benson
Homemaker and Cottonwood resident Vallie (Val) Benson died Aug. 17, 1999.
She was 74 years old.
A visitation will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. with funeral services scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood. Rev. Bib Girard will conduct the service with burial following in the Valley View Cemetery
in Clarkdale.
Mrs. Benson had lived in Arizona for 24 years.
She was born July 2, 1925 in Clebit, Okla., the daughter of William Wesley and Sarah Edna (Reeves) Clark.
Her family and especially her husband, John were her life. She enjoyed hunting, camping, flowers, birds and all wildlife. Both Mrs. Benson and her husband loved working in their garden and canning all the vegetables that they grew. They loved picking wild raspberries in the mountains and according to her family, Mrs. Benson made the best raspberry jelly in the world.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, John I. Benson; two daughters, Phyllis Yates of Texas and Sue Schoonmaker of Cottonwood; two sons-in-law, Tom Yates and Gene Schoonmaker; grandchildren, Chris and Don George of Texas, Greg and Mona Yates of Texas, Jeff and Joan Schoonmaker of Scottsdale and Laurie and Jeff Campbell of Cottonwood; great-grandchildren, Cory, Devon and Colton George of Texas and Brittany Campbell of Cottonwood; a brother, Henry Clark of Oklahoma; a niece Barbara Piatz and her husband John, and their children Tammy and John Piatz of California.
Donations may be made in Mrs. Benson's name to a favorite charity.
