HATHAWAY, Naomi Shoemaker, 99, a resident of Tucson since 1923, died at her residence in Villa Catalina condominiums on February 14, 1996. She was a rancher, teacher, artist, dietician, world traveler, keen observer of world affairs, and an avid grower of beautiful flowers. Naomi was born in northern Texas on June 25, 1896, a month after her family’s home was destroyed by a tornado. When she was six they moved to Oklahoma. Naomi became a registered dietician in 1918 after receiving a B.S. degree from what is now Texas Women’s University in Denton, and an internship at Philadelphia General Hospital. It was while on the staff at the National Sanitorium in Johnson City, TN that she met her future husband, patient Charles Howard Hathaway. He had contracted TB while in the Army Medical Corp. After he and Naomi were married, Army doctors arranged for them to move to Tucson in order to improve his health. Shortly after moving to Tucson, they joined two other families in homesteading a ranch five miles southwest of Rincon Peak. In spite of very poor lung capacity, Howard built an adobe house which was their pride and joy, and built up a herd of pure-bred Herefords as the centerpiece of the ranch operation. In a one-room school on the ranch Naomi taught the children of the area, including those of the Mexican employees. Though the work was hard, Naomi recounted many good times the families enjoyed. After her husband died in 1955 at age 59, Naomi returned to the city and became house director at one of the U of A sororities. She sold most of the ranch when land prices were favorable and embarked on a life of world travel and art study. Alaska, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Rome, the Holy Land, and trips throughout the U.S. were among her itineraries. When in her seventies she traveled to Istanbul, Greece, Spain, and Portugal. On most of those journeys she started out alone. In one of her most exciting trips she flew to South America’s west coast, visiting two jungle camps along the Amazon, riding in a speedboat in pouring rain. Machu Picchu, Lima, the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador and Columbia were also part of this itinerary. In later years bouts of uncertain health curtailed her traveling, yet she continued to paint, garden and remain active in her church. She was a gentle soul who always had a word of good cheer for all she encountered. Naomi is survived by two nieces, Margurette Shoemaker of CA and Junia Woodard of OK; and many friends and neighbors who loved and admired her and will miss her greatly. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 824 N. Second Avenue, 85705 on Tuesday, February 20 at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, Naomi requested that contributions be made to the Memorial Fund at the First Congregational Church.
