SMITH, Jerome A., Sr., July 2, 1910 to January 14 1996. Predeceased by son, Jerome A. Smith, Jr. Survived by wife of 56 years, Mary; son, Thomas Smith and family; daughter, Doris Ann Mah and family; one brother; three sisters; and his canine friend, Bunny. A Celebration of his life at a future date.

THOMPSON, Rose Marie, passed away peacefully on January 19, 1996. Her 77 years were lived to the fullest and she was blessed by the presence of her entire family and many dear friends during her brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, in 1981. Her remaining family who will carry on her works of kindness and love, are her children and children-in-law, Patricia Thompson and Barry Coleman, Mark and Eileen Thompson and Rosemary and John Roybal; her sisters and brother-in-law, Mildred Mudie and Eleanor and Ray Schroff; and her eight grandchildren, all of Tucson. She also will be missed by her nieces and nephews who live both in Tucson and California. Originally from Chicago, Rose Marie was a Tucson resident since 1972, when she moved here with her family. She was a woman of action, giving generously of her time, organizational skills and wisdom to several worthwhile organizations which benefited greatly from her talents. Among her many activities, she was President of the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church Ladies Auxiliary; she was the friendly, helpful volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital information desk; she was Past President of the St. Mary’s Auxiliary; and she was an advocate and member of the Board of Directors for Youth On Their Own, a Tucson organization which helps homeless teenagers. Instead of flowers as a tribute, she suggested donations to Youth On Their Own (Pima County Homeless Teens) 3321 North First Avenue, 85719 or the Ladies of the Most Holy Trinity, 1300 North Greasewood, 85745 for the Casa Maria Lunch Program. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, January 22 at Most Holy Trinity Church, 1300 North Greasewood Road, with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23 at Most Holy Trinity, followed by services at Holy Hope Cemetery.

VERDUSCO, Ynez C., 85, died January 17, 1996. Father of Josie Alcaraz, Linda Soto, Angie Candelaria, Genevieve, Ynez, Richard, Michael and Frank Verdusco; brother of Paul Laguna; 30 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren also survive. Funeral Service 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 22 at BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, with Mr. Manuel Paderes officiating. Burial in Holy Hope Cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, January 21 at BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

WELSHANS, Katherine E., 48, of Jersey Shore, PA. died January 1, 1996 at home after lengthy complications of bladder cancer surgery. Survived by devoted husband of eight years, Nathan L. Welshans. Born December 31, 1947 in Tsingtao, China, she was a daughter of the late John E. Foster, Capt., USMC and Lucille Foster-Britz. Surviving besides her husband and mother of Tucson, AZ are a son, Kyle C. Welshans, serving in the Navy, a daughter, Bethany G. Welshans at home, and a sister Diane Foster Lomas of Tucson, AZ. A graduate of Palo Verde High School and the University of Arizona with a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education, she was previously employed by Shop Vac Corp., Williamsport, PA and the Postal Service. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. January 6, 1996 at Rearick Carpenter Funeral Home, Jersey Shore, PA with Rev. Ken Weiss, Pastor of the First Church of Christ Disciples, Williamsport officiating. Interment was in Oval Cemetery, Oval, PA.

ABRAHAMS, Bertram “Bert’, 86, of Tucson, died January 19, 1996. Survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sylvia; loving children, Arlyn DeWees of Boca Raton, FL, Hal Abrahams of Miami, FL, Lee (Carol) Abrahams of Tucson, Gary (Mary) Abrahams of Sierra Vista, Iris Underwood of San Diego, CA; sister, Jewel Fant of Cleveland, OH; 11 grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Predeceased by brothers, Richard, 1990 and William, 1965. Graveside services were held Sunday, 2:00 p.m. Knights of Pythias Section, Evergreen Cemetery, with Rabbi Joseph S. Weizenbaum officiating. BESSETT, Leota E., 83, of Tucson, died January 20, 1996. Wife of Wilber J. of Sahuarita; mother of Marilyn J. Peterson of Green Valley, AZ, Larry J. Bessett of Tucson, John N. Bessett of Green Valley, AZ, Hazel R. Ferguson of Showlow, AZ, Robert E. Bessett of Tucson; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren. Funeral Service will be held at L.D.S Sahuarita Ward, Wednesday, January 24, at 10:00 a.m. Internment South Lawn. BILBRO, Charles W. (Chuck), 39, died peacefully, January 20, 1996. He is survived by his parents, Charles E. and Lucyann Bilbro of Tucson; his brother, Michael Bilbro; and his sister, Diane Hart of Tucson, his sister, Cathi Codner of Mesa; his nieces and nephews, Dustin and Cara Codner of Mesa, Brittany, Nikki and Joey Hart of Tucson; his soulmate and companion, David Locke of Tucson; his grandfather, Ferdinand Mueller of Sun Sites, AZ; his great aunts, Marjorie Witzberger and Nan Garland; his many aunts, uncles and cousins of Tucson, Sun Sites and Phoenix; all of his many loving friends and people who have supported him throughout his illness. Preceded by his beloved friend, Rick Walker of WA, his grandparents, Inez Mueller, Florence and Ralph Kintner of Tucson. Chuck graduated from Sahuaro High School. He was a natural landscaper by trade. He had different jobs as a maintenance supervisor. Chuck will be remembered for by his humor, his love and companionship for all animals and nature. BOWMAN, Edna M., 79, died January 21, 1996. Survived by her husband, Donn Bowman; daughter, Penny McClain of Tucson; sister, Ruth Wetzstein of Tucson; aunt, Loretta Knapp of NY; and cousin, David Knapp of OH. Funeral Service 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 1996 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, with Pastor David Poedel officiating. GORDON, Evelyn Elizabeth, 83 years old, died Sunday, January 21, 1996 in Tucson. Survived by son, Hugh Wright of Cedar Falls, IA; sister, Helen Oster of Des Moines, IA; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 1996 at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway, with inurnment at a later date at Our Lady of the Desert in Tucson.

HARRIS, Christopher (Chris) Michael, 30, died in Beaumont, TX on Sunday, January 7, 1996. He was a resident of Tucson since 1969, recently relocating to Texas. Preceded in death by father, James W. Harris. Survived by daughters, Valerie Keller of Tucson and Nora Christine of CA; mother, Lorraine Harris; brothers, Craig and Colin; sisters, Cheryl Stone and Colleen Woodrum, all of Tucson, and Lucinda Harris of Many Farms, AZ; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. Family held private services on January 11 in Beaumont. In loving memory, a Memorial will be held at Reid Park Ramada #5 on Sunday, January 28 beginning at 11:00 a.m.

HELD, Dr. Harold W. D.D.S., 94 years old, died Sunday, January 21, 1996 in Tucson. Survived by close friends, Hubert and Jan DeJaynes of Tucson. Preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Doran held. Mass for Dr. Held will be said at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 1996 at San Xavier Mission, 1980 W. San Xavier Rd. Tucson, with burial to follow at South Lawn Cemetery. Friends of Dr. Held may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 1996 at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway, where Rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m.

HILL, Ira Lee, 96, of Tucson, died January 21, 1996. Born July 11, 1899 in Berryville, AR. He was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. Survived by a daughter-in-law, LaVonne Hill of El Paso, TX; brother, Ernest Hill of Berryville, AR; grandson, David Hawn of Albuquerque, NM; six great-grandchildren. Services Thursday 1:00 p.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY with Rev. Daniel Pann officiating. Interment to follow Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY and CEMETERY, N. Oracle and W. Miracle Mile. Memorial contributions may be made to Northwest Baptist Church, 5215 N. HINER, Harold Lyle, of Tucson, age 77, died January 19, 1996. Mr. Hiner was the general manager of Harold Hiner and Associates-Life, Health, and Accident Insurance (affiliated with Mutual of Omaha and United of Omaha), retired. Survivors include his wife, Carmen; his daughter, Christine Kasten of Albany, CA; and his son, Richard Hiner of Seattle, WA; his grandchildren, Zachary Kasten, Katie, Jimmy and Lizzie Hiner. He is also survived by his sister, Harriet and brother-in-law, Burt Johnson of Sun City West; and his brother, Jim and sister-in-law, Lillian Hiner of Mesa. He was preceded in death by sons, Jim and Robert Hiner. Harold was a staunch supporter of his community and state. He worked many years for candidates at the local, state and national level; including Barry Goldwater, Jack Williams, Paul Fannin, Lew Murphy and countless others. For the duration of World War II he served in combat with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific and Mediterranean. Aboard the USS Boise, a light cruiser, he was awarded the Navy Cross for his bravery during the 2nd battle of the Savo Sea. He was involved in the activities of his children, including serving as P.T.A. President of Peter Howell grade school. In addition to running his business, he was involved with the Marine Corp Reserve as V.T.U. instructor until his retirement as a Colonel, April 4, 1978. His volunteer service over the years included: President-Southern Arizona Life Underwriters, President-General Agents and Managers Assn. Tucson, President-Arizona AALU. Board of Chairman-Southern Arizona Heart Assn. and Arizona State Heart Assn., President-Big Brothers Tucson, Secretary-Arizona Boys Ranch. In addition, he served on the following Boards: Marshall Home for Men, Sertoma, Awareness House, GAMA, United Community Campaign, Skyline Improvement Assn. and as President Skyline Country Club. Primary interests were definitely his family and friends. He was a great lover of life and the beauty of the world and an avid outdoorsman; hunter, fisherman, hiker and camper. He took up golf at age 50 and nailed four holes-in-one. He was a voracious reader and great storyteller. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd., from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 24. Memorial Service 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 25, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 750 West Chapala Drive. IVINS, Ruth Elizabeth, 86, of Tucson, passed away January 21, 1996. Survived by children, Esteleen L. Maxwell of OK, Leon R. Price of KS, Clifford Price of AL, Archie Price of OK, Jerry Price of TX, Ronnie L. Price of CO, Warren (Linda) Ivins of IA and Larry Price of LA; also survived by several grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Ivins sang at different clubs, restaurants and nursing homes over the past 20 years under the name of “Ruthie with the Western Hat.’ ZMemorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 25, 1996 at ARIZONA MORTUARY, 7 E. University Blvd. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society Research. Arrangements by ARIZONA MORTUARY.

PARKS, Ruth Woods, 79, a lifetime resident of Tucson, passed away January 20, 1996. Born May 4, 1916 in Capitain, NM. She moved to Tucson at the age of one. She is survived by her son, George (Charlene) Parks; daughters, Katherine (Richard) McLain and Frances (Leon) Slusher; sons, Douglas Parks, Franklin (Gayle) Parks and Roger (Anna Soto Mayor) Parks; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 24, 1996 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave. Funeral Service 9:00 a.m. Thursday at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL. ROBINSON, Edrie B., 87, of Tucson, died January 21, 1996. Preceded in death by parents, Fred and Bertha Heiser. Survivors include: husband, Don Robinson of 57 years; sons, Stephen and Jeffery (Joyce); sisters, Olga and Ethel; brothers, Vern, James and Daryl, all of Mansfield, OH. Edrie was employed for a short time at TUSD and was an active member of Fountain of Life Lutheran Church on Kolb Road. SCHUNK, Evaline E., 83, of Tucson, died January 21, 1996. Preceded in death by husband, Russell J. and sister-in-law, Dorothy Brin. Survivors include: several cousins. Mrs. Schunk was a graduate of Wittenberg University and Reserve Library School. She worked in several libraries before coming to Tucson Public Library in 1963 where she worked with children until her retirement in 1977. Memorial Services will be at Streams of the Desert Lutheran Church, 5360 E. Pima St., 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 1996. Interment will be in Toledo, OH. SPONGBERG, Kenneth F., 70, of Tucson, passed away January 20, 1996. Survived by children, Deborah Laing of Tucson, Sharon (Gary) Rundle of TX, William Spongberg of CA, Christine Kane and Marjorie McCoy of NM; and 11 grandchildren. TESO, Frances G., 57, passed away on January 21, 1996. She is survived by her husband, Joe G. Teso; son, Anthony Teso; sisters, Carmen Cancjo, Gracie Bejarno, Gloria Valadez; brothers, Prospero Gonzales, Jesus Gonzales; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 24, 1996 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Holy Family Church with Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered at Holy Hope Family Church on Thursday, January 25, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery.
