BALLARD, Elliott G. “Al’, 62, of Tucson, died January 18, 1996. Survived by wife, Patricia Ballard; daughters, Cynthia Ballard of Houston, TX, Carol (Tim) Meighen of Mason, MI, Patricia Ballard of Bath, MI, Elizabeth (Dr. James) Megna of Syracuse, NY; son, Peter Koenig of Rochester, NY; granddaughter, Katrina Cadieux; mother, Rosa Ballard of Spring Arbor, MI; brother, Henry D. Ballard, Jr. of Houston, TX. Mr. Ballard received a Bachelor and Master’s degree from Michigan State University. He held a position with Michigan Civil Service and Division of Budget and later served as the staff analyst for the Michigan House of Representatives. He served in the dual position of assistant to the President of Michigan State University and Secretary to the MSU Board of Trustees until he joined the staff of State University of NY as Deputy to the Chancellor in 1980. Mr. Ballard was an avid golfer and was a member of numerous clubs. He was a US Army veteran during the Korean Conflict. Friends may call Sunday 10:00 a.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY. BARBER, Ofelia Coca, 86, of Sallisaw, OK, died Sunday, January 7, 1996 in a Fort Smith, AK hospital. She was a homemaker. Graveside Services were held January 8 at Cottonwood Cemetery, south of Muldrow, OK. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Barber. She is survived by five daughters, Betty Gray of OK, Resauda Wymer, Caroline Mezzapelle and Pat Barber, all of Tucson, AZ and Rose Freeman of Green Valley, AZ; three sons, Jerry Raught and James Barber of Seattle and George Barber, Jr. of TX; two sisters, Rose Lopez and Alice Lardizabal, both of Tucson; 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, January 22 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Ambrose Church, 300 S. Tucson Blvd.
CENTO, John, 90, of Tucson, died January 17, 1996. Survived by loving wife, Josephine; and beloved daughter, Josephine. COOPER, Virginia Clarke, 80, died January 18, 1996. Born December 3, 1915 in Nogales to Philip and Gypsy Clarke, a pioneer ranching/banking family, who preceded her in death. Also preceded in death by beloved daughter, Gypsy Cooper and three brothers, Philip, Dan and Mike. She is survived by son, Clarke Cooper of CA; two grandsons, Melvin and Jesse; two sisters, Patsy (George) Grove of OR and Nancy Rice of Tucson; many nieces, nephews and loving friends. Virginia graduated from Tucson High, attended the U of A, did volunteer work for the Assistance League in Green Valley, played bridge and did needlepoint. Virginia loved gardening, speaking Spanish, traveling. She always had a smile on her face and loved laughter and a good joke. HAMMOND, Elberta Belle, 75, of Tucson, died January 17, 1996. Preceded in death by husband, Clarence in 1991, children Alvin in 1984 and Janie in 1995. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Loebe; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She loved fishing and camping and was well thought of as an excellent homemaker. HARRIS, William F., 69, of Tucson, died January 16, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons, William L. Harris and David (Jo Anne) Woolwine; daughter, Frankie Croft; step-children, Vicky, Gary and Randy; grandchildren, Stephanie, William, Carolyn, Jimmy, Teri, Michael, Beau, Tracey, Teresa, Shannon and Christi; one great-grandchild, Savannah also survives. MANN, Harry Lloyal, 89, of Tucson, died January 17, 1996. Born October 27, 1906, Phoenix, AZ. Survived by devoted wife, Bee of Tucson; sons, Loren Mann of Phoenix, Larry Mann of Ralls, TX; daughter, Barbara Ann Cade of Lindale, TX; brothers, Charles E. Mann, Kenneth A. Mann, Robert E. Mann, all of Phoenix; sisters, Lillian Gardner, Katherine Jones, both of Phoenix, Lois Rhodes of Redlands, CA; nine grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Mr. Mann was widely known in the Horseless Carriage Club and restored numerous antique cars. He was a life member of the Church of Christ, and was an accomplished Bible teacher. He assisted in the erection of the Country Club Road Church of Christ Building and served many years as an Elder. He retired as manager of Arizona Sash and Door Co. where he worked for many years. He was a pioneer of Arizona. Son of T. A. Mann and Lola Cartright Mann whose father came to Phoenix in 1874. Mr. Mann graduated from Phoenix Union High in 1924. RAMIREZ, George M. (Chochie), age 69, passed away on January 17, 1996. Predeceased by mother, Susana Martinez, brother, Alex Perez and sister, Mary Alvarez. Survived by daughters, Susie, Gloria and Georgette; nine grandchildren; also sisters, Lupe (Fred) Caroll, Sally (Bladie) Soza, Lolly (Frank) Cuestas, Rosa (Manuel) Natividad. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. George was born in Tucson, AZ. He was enlisted in the Marines at age 17 and served in the Pacific during World War II. Services will be held in Los Angeles, CA.
TEGUNS, Therese Fay Abigal, 54, died January 17, 1996. Sister of Penny (Bill) Martin of Tucson. Aunt of Carla (Brian) Farrar of Tucson. HUMPHREYS, Violet B., age 102, died January 18, 1996. She is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Charles R. Humphreys. Her survivors include daughter, Ruth (Norman) Pehrson; son, William (Marjorie) Humphreys; grandchildren, Norma (George) Stewart, Nancy P. Spencer, Bruce (Karen) Pehrson, Ross (Susan) Humphreys, Douglas (Jacque) Humphreys, Robert (Judi) Humphreys, James Humphreys, Scott (Debbie) Humphreys; and 17 great grandchildren. Vi grew up in Onset, MA, spending most of her adult life in New Bedford and Mattapoisett, MA. She and her husband were very active in the Methodist Church, particularly in New Bedford and Mattapoisett. Moving to Tucson in 1970 at age 76, Vi enjoyed playing the piano and telling stories of the past. Shortly after her 100th birthday she responded to a request to make a video tape about the origin of the “Wigwam, ’ a charitable religious undertaking in 1894 for Indians of Narraganset Bay. In recent years she has fascinated family and friends by tales of life before telephone, radio, automobile, and airplanes. Her dignified manner and salty wit will be missed. JENKINS, Helen Ramona (Mona), 76, passed away January 16, 1996 after suffering from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) for several years. Mona was born January 22, 1919 at Lerna, IL the second child of Rev. Dr. Philip R. Coen and Helen Buchanan Coen. She is survived by two children, Jean Diane (Pete) Johnson and John W. Erickson, both of Tucson; three grandsons; and one great granddaughter. She is also survived by her only sister, Mary C. (William B.) Esslinger of Tucson and a brother, Rev. Philip R. (Lucille) Coen of Kerrville, TX. Her parents and one brother, John Frederick (Betty) Coen predeceased Mona. Mrs. Jenkins taught elementary school for many years. She attended public schools in Illinois and Indiana, attended Millikin University and Central Illinois University where she earned a teaching certificate. Her first teaching position was in a country school where she taught all eight grades with an enrollment of 16 pupils. Mona also taught in the Clinton, Illinois public school system before moving to Tucson in 1957. She then graduated from the University of Arizona with a BA in Education in 1958, and also later earned her Masters degree at the U of A. From 1958 to 1981 (23 years) she taught in the Tucson Unified School District. Mona was a member of Pi Lambda and Theta and National Honor and Professional Association for Women in Education. She was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and played the piano, violin and was a choir member in the churches where her father was the minister. She was, until her health prevented, a member of the El Presidio Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. At Mona’s request, there will be no public service; the family will hold a private memorial service with her brother, Rev. Philip R. Coen and her nephew, Rev. William C. Esslinger officiating. POTTS, Mary K., 75, died Wednesday, January 17, 1996. Survived by son, Douglas Lee Potts of Tucson; sister, Martha Terry; and brother, Bob Klabau, both of KS; nephews, Richard Terry of Tucson, Ron Gilchrist of KS and Larry Gilchrist of NV; nieces, Susan Melton of CO and Nancy Maher of KS. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, J. Lee Potts and her sister, Verna Gilchrist (Klabau) of KS. Mary was a resident of Tucson for 44 years and employed as an administrative secretary for various departments of Pima Country for over 20 years.
