SWAN, David James, 43, of Tucson, died Saturday, January 13, 1996. Mr. Swan moved to Tucson 25 years ago from his birthplace in Battle Creek, MI. He graduated in 1975 from the University of Arizona, and settled in Tucson at that time. He was an employee of the United Parcel Service for 17 years. Mr. Swan is survived by his parents, Ruth and E. James Swan of Battle Creek, MI; a sister, Janis Buser of Rockford, IL; a brother, Edward T. Swan of Wilmette, IL; a niece, Melanie Buser; three nephews, David Buser, Eric Swan and Matt Swan. Mr. Swan was known by his family and friends as a very personable man, with an exceptional sense of humor and a generous nature. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway). WHITE, Rhoda Louise, 80, of Tucson, died Tuesday, January 16, 1996. She is survived by her children, Linda Scharman of Tucson, Robert L. White, Jr. of Pensacola, FL; granddaughter, Stephanie Weckler of Bland, MO; brothers, Elder Jones of Chattanooga, TN, Maj. Marvin Jones, USAF, Ret. of Tucson; sister, Edythe Hawkins of Chattanooga. Mrs. White, had a long career in Hotel Operations, including positions in Tennessee, Alabama and Arizona. Her last position was at the Santa Rita Hotel from which she retired in 1980. BAILEY, Evelyn E., 73, of Tucson, died January 16, 1996. She is survived by her children, Carrie Martin, Beverly Hall, and James Bailey; sisters, Lois Cobbs and Mary Zimmerman; and brothers, Lloyd Thornton, and Glenn Thornton; grandchildren, Peery Martin, David Martin, Lillie Martin, Thom Martin, Charles Hall, Patricia and Carolyn Hall; and Andy Waters; four great grandchildren also survive. MANN, Harry Lloyal, 89, of Tucson, died January 17, 1996. Born October 27, 1906, Phoenix, AZ. Survived by devoted wife, Bee of Tucson; sons, Loren Mann of Phoenix, Larry Mann of Ralls, TX; daughter, Barbara Ann Cade of Lindale, TX; brothers, Charles E. Mann, Kenneth A. Mann, Robert E. Mann, all of Phoenix; sisters, Lillian Gardner, Katherine Jones, both of Phoenix, Lois Rhodes of Redlands, CA; nine grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Mr. Mann was widely known in the Horseless Carriage Club and restored numerous antique cars. He was a life member of the Church of Christ, and was an accomplished Bible teacher. He assisted in the erection of the Country Club Road Church of Christ Building and served many years as an Elder. He retired as manager of Arizona Sash and Door Co. where he worked for many years. He was a pioneer of Arizona. Son of T. A. Mann and Lola Cartright Mann whose father came to Phoenix in 1874. Mr. Mann graduated from Phoenix Union High in 1924. MAZUR, Richard C., 63, formerly of Tucson, died January 16, 1996 in Cannon City, CO. He worked for AAA Auto Parts in Tucson and Green Valley for several years until he retired three years ago. He is survived by his father, Michael; three brothers, John, Bruce and Walter; sisters, Dorothy and Marian; adopted son, R. J.; and adopted daughter, Cassandra; also several nephews and nieces. MULLER, John Christopher. Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on January 22 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Mammoth. John passed away January 12, 1996. He was born December 16, 1961 in San Manuel, AZ. He graduated from San Manuel High School and has been working for Smith’s grocery store in Tucson for the last five years. He has lived in Mammoth since 1961. He enjoyed working for various charities including riding in bike-a-thons for St. Jude’s Hospital, Muscular Dystrophy, and others. He was a member at the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family.
He felt a deep desire to keep the roadways and parks around Mammoth clean of litter. By his leading example of the many volunteer hours he spent doing this, he encouraged those around him to do the same. Survived by his parents, Robert and Patsy Muller; brothers, Robert (Julie) Muller of Mesa, James (Sara) Muller of Guam; two sisters, Mary (Tony) Salaz of Tucson, and Judy (Ed) Redpath of Alamogordo, NM; his grandmother, Grace Tschirhart of Bisbee; three nieces and two nephews. She was an R.N. and worked for Dr.’s Heim and Shallenberger. She was a board member of L.A.R.C. for 19 years. She was a volunteer at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Clinic and instructed for the Red Cross Disaster Team for many years. She was a member of Pilot and Cholla Business and Professional Womens Club. SIMEK, Janet L., long-time Tucson educator, was born June 30, 1942, in Ellsworth, Kansas, died in Tucson November 30, 1995. Janet attended and graduated from high school at Cuba, Kansas, received a Bachelor of Science Education from Kansas State Teacher College of Emporia, and received two Master of Education degrees from the University of Arizona. After teaching in Bonner Springs, Kansas, for two years, she worked for Tucson United School District and Salpointe High School for a total of 25 years. Janet was listed in 1989-90 Who’s Who in American Education, served as president of Tucson Area Reading Council, Arizona State Reading Association, and Chapter 30 of the University of Arizona Phi Delta Kappa, was a member of International Reading Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and Order of the Eastern Star. She also served as an elder of St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church from 1984-90 and was on the governing board of House of Neighborly Service. Preceded in death by her father John Paul Simek and nephew John Wilkinson, she is survived by mother, Lorene Simek; sister, Judy (Jack) Beyer; and nephews, Jeff and Jason; sister, Kaye (Philip) Wilkinson; and niece, Jodi (Leon) Smith; and great-nephews, Blake and Morgan Wilkinson. Jan’s ideas and ideals, as well as her will to become an active and productive member of society, led her into the field of education and into a variety of leadership roles where her strong sense of responsibility and unique ability to innovate were apparent to all. There was no challenge too daunting for her, no mountain too high to conquer, and in all her efforts she demanded the best from herself and her colleagues. She will be missed. Memorial Services will be held January 20, 1996 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, 3809 E. Third Street, Tucson, Arizona. ZIPF, Franklin L., 77, a native Tucsonan, born September 17, 1918, died January 16, 1996. His maternal grandparents were George and Mathilda Pusch who homesteaded the Steampump Ranch and for whom Pusch Ridge and Pusch Peak are named.
A Navy Veteran and Southern Pacific Railroad engineer, he retired to Portland, OR. Surviving are his wife, Edna; a daughter, Barbara Crumpler; a brother, Henry; stepsons, Robert and David Simpson; and a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Services are private.
