LINTHICUM, Seth H., Jr., passed away peacefully on January 8, 1996. His seventy-five years had been lived to the fullest, and in his final days he felt blessed as always by the presence of his beloved wife of fifty years and to be able, once again, to grace all their four children and their families with his great presence of mind, his humor and his love. He was a gentleman and a scholar, an astute businessman and challenging teacher, a loyal friend and lively companion whose will, from earliest youth, was to know the world and his fellow human beings well. Chemistry was field when he graduated from Johns Hopkins University at 19, but it was in Education that he completed his doctorate after retiring as a Colonel from the Army’s Medical Service Corps – a career that had taken him to Peru and Germany, to Texas and back to Maryland, his home state, and brought him finally to Arizona and his second home, in Tucson. His many travels began as a teen-ager, when he signed on as a cabin-boy on a freighter bound for the Orient, and he served his country in North Africa and Italy during World War II, but his penultimate journey, undertaken just this last year, carried him back to China again, as if he knew it was time to come full circle. Neither his curiosity nor his presence of mind deserted him when he realized that his final journey was upon him; from his great reservoirs of love and dignity he drew the strength to call his closest friends and relatives and let them know how very much they had meant to him, and he called each of his children to him to say his farewells and express his abiding love for them. Taking leave of his wife, his life’s longest and closest companion, proved to be the most difficult task he had ever set himself, and he only found the strength to accomplish it at the very last. Yet one can be sure that, had he not believed in Salvation, part of this extraordinary man would have set off on the journey happily, anyway, intent upon discovering the truth about life after death.
The Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 13 at Catalina United Methodist Church, 2700 E. Speedway in Tucson, and followed by a reception at the Linthicum home. Interment will be at the family cemetery in Linthicum Heights, Maryland at a later date. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in his memory to the Carondelet Hospice at St. Joseph’s Hospital, 350 N. Wilmot Rd., Tucson, AZ 85711, which helped him and his loved ones to come to peace with his passing.
