HOPKINS, Effie Dot, long time Tucson teacher, died December 17, 1995. She was born December 8, 1908 in Pine, AZ. and was the sixth child of Nott and Lucy Hopkins, who homesteaded a cattle ranch in Strawberry in the late 1800's. They built a log cabin, raised food crops and cattle that ran mostly on public domain as was usual in the early days.
Upon the death of their father, Nott Hopkins, in 1909, the ranch was sold and the family moved to the Verde Valley where the mother operated a small hotel until 1913. When Effie’s mother married a U.S. Forest ranger the family moved to Beaver Creek Ranger Station. Later they acquired another ranch where the family lived in summer, moving back to Camp Verde during the school year.
Effie received her teaching diploma from Tempe Normal School in 1929, an A.B. in Education from Arizona State University in 1941 and a Master’s Degree from the University of Arizona in 1966. She taught in the Tucson schools for forty-five years before retiring in 1974. She began her career at Fort Lowell School in 1929 and moved to Davidson School in 1931, where she stayed for 34 years. Her last nine years before retiring were spent as a supervising teacher and reading specialist at various schools in the Tucson Unified School District.
Effie had a gift for motivating children to learn and, throughout the years, taught hundreds of students the skills so important to life-long enrichment and success. She was an extremely talented and respected teacher, as evidenced by this comment from one of her supervisors. “She is interested in helping each child to make the best adjustment to school living and to do the best work of which he is capable. Her classroom is a place where children are understood and respected and, therefore, happy.’
Effie was a Republican Precinct Committeewoman for many years and in 1977 received the Art Wales Award from the Pima County Republican Party for outstanding volunteer service. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church, P.E.O. and the Order of Eastern Star. She belonged to several professional organizations, including Delta Kappa Gamma, Arizona Education Association and the Retired Teachers’ Association. She was listed in several editions of “Who’s Who of American Women’ beginning in 1964.
Effie is survived by her brother, Dave Hopkins of Camp Verde, AZ; nieces, Mary Lyons, Lake Montezuma, AZ; Wanda Shattuck (Lemuel), Tucson; Marilyn Murray (George), Tucson; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Local arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 13, 1996 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 824 N. Second Ave.
