He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Jane Leal of Tucson; three daughters, Diane Early, Alice Loth and Cecilia Johnson; sister, Teresa Valenzuela; three nieces, two nephews and four grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held this Friday, January 5, 1996 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, 801 N. Grande Ave., Tucson.

PEARSON, Edward C. Sr., died December 31, 1995 in Tucson. Survived by wife, Ann Pearson of Tucson, AZ; three sons, Edward Pearson Jr. of Midlothian, TX, John Charles Pearson and Robert Louis Pearson, both of Tucson, AZ; one daughter, Cynthia Niebel of Albuquerque, NM; one sister Charlene Rains of Garland, TX; and four granddaughters. Friends may call WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 1996. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL. PONCHETTI, Harley G., 62, of Tucson, died December 30, 1995. Survived by loving wife, Ruth Lamar; daughters, Debra (Mark) Adams of TX, Robin (Craig) Miles of Tucson, Paula (Larry) Reilly of NV; nine grandchildren and his mother Margie A. Williams. Harley was a member of the USGA, Industrial Golf League, and the American Legion. Family requests memorial contributions be made to Children’s Clinic for Rehabilitative Services, 2600 N. THOEN, Mary Maxine, 54, died December 27, 1995. Mother of Michael C. Thoen of Tucson; sister of Shirley Wadsworth of NV, Beverly Hiller of OR, Patty Leerssen of MN and Jim Conway of AK. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Memorial Service 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 5 at St. Joseph’s Hospital Chapel, 350 N. Wilmot. Inurnment will be in Montana in the summer. Carmen Bernal Trejo 93, our beloved mother, dear grandmother and best friend, was carried into the glorious land by our Lord Jesus Christ on December 31, 1995. She was preceded by her husband of 34 years, Florencio Trejo and never remarried. Carmen will always be treasured and deeply loved by her survivors; daughters, Rose T. (Jesus) Leon, Connie Maricella (Tom) Tovarez, Christina (Guero) Alvarez, Sally A. (Armando) Rodriguez; grandchildren, Ralph T. Leon, David E. (Debi) Leon, Alex Leon, Francis De Leon, Rosella (Michael) Loya, Justin Tovarez, Vivian Tovarez, Melissa Burruel, Michelle Burruel, Peter Rodriguez, Lisa Rodriguez, Mary Carmen Rodriguez and Michael Rodriguez; brother, Armando (Hortencia) Bernal; nieces and nephews, Alma D. Porras, Armando Bernal Jr., Molly Urrea and George Bernal; 12 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and many many close friends. VARGAS, Felix R., 48 years old, died Monday, January 1, 1996. Survivors include wife, Anita; daughter, Patricia (Jorge) Torres; son, Jose Armando; son, Felix Jr. (Monica); daughter, Yolanda; brother, Pietro Vargas; brother, John Escudero; sister, Gloria (Ken) Archambault; five grandchildren, all of Tucson; mother, Eusebia Rios of El Paso. Mr. Vargas worked 18 years at Learjet. He coached Little League for 11 years. He spent 17 years in the military, some of which was during Vietnam; some in the Marine Reserve. Visitation will be Thursday, January 4, 1996 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave. Funeral will be Friday, January 5, 1996, 11:00 a.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL.

WALTERS, Joseph E., 62, died December 31, 1995. Husband of Sue M. Haslam; father of Tamra (John) Lebbs and Kevin (Kathy) Haslam; beloved grandfather of Jake and Adam Lebbs. Fabian Alexander loving husband of Susan Alexander, born April 5, 1919 in Naples, Italy, died January 1, 1996 in Tucson. Son of Count Victor Emmanuel D’Alessandro of Pescolanciano, the family emigrated to the Untied States in 1921. Survived by his wife Susan; sister, Flora Krisman (Stanley) of Long Island, NY; brother, Raymond Alexander (Marguerite) of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; and brother-in-law, David Stewart of Sunrise, FL; and by son, Alfred M. Benson (Kathleen) of Tucson; grandson, Jonathan P. Benson (Wendy) of Portland, OR; granddaughters, Jennifer K. Benson of El Paso, TX and Eileen B. Benson of Cork, Ireland; great granddaughter, Emma Benson of Portland. Preceded in death by his father Victor Emmanuel, his mother Cira, sister Sylvia (Alexander) Stewart and brother Herbert (Rosemarie). Fabian served four years in the 240th Engineer Battalion of the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre in WWII as a master sergeant. Following the war, he joined with his brother Raymond and their father in the building business in Long Island, NY, where they built housing subdivisions and commercial buildings. Fabian was twice president of the Huntington New York Rotary Club. Fabian and Raymond were also partners in a venture capital firm until his retirement to Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Tucson in 1976. Visitation will be at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd., Thursday, January 4 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. There will be a Funeral Mass for Fabian at St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 5150 N. Valley View Road at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, January 5.

Gerald T. Archer 86, of Tucson, died January 2, 1996. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beatrice; son, Charles Archer, Tucson; daughter, Betty (Bill) Roberts, Houston; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In 1944 Mr. Archer moved to Tucson from Blytheville, AR and was founder and owner of Super Exterminating Co. He served on the Board of Directors of the Alano Club for 20 years and nine years at the Recovery Halfway House. Donations may be sent to the Alano Club. Memorial Services will be held at Pima Street Baptist Church, 5056 E. Pima on Friday, January 5, 1996 at 10:30 a.m. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

CARREON, Joe Y., 64, a lifelong resident of Tucson, died Tuesday, January 2, 1996. Survived by brother, Felix (Dorothy) Carreon of Tucson; sister, Beatrice Mejorado of Sacramento, CA; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Private services at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY.

CARRIZOSA, Elena R. (Tongelele), 58 years old passed away Tuesday, January 2, 1996. She is survived by son, Frank (Sarah) Rivera of Phoenix, son, John (Veronica) Paz, son, Ruben Paz; daughter, Patricia Pas (Russell Froleih), daughter, Leticia (Frank) Hernandez, daughter, Maribel Enriquez; brother, David Rivera, brother, Roberto (Irene) Rivera; sister, Virginia Vildusea; mother, Eliserta M. Rivera, all of Tucson; brother, Martin (Ilene) Rivera of CA; eight grandchildren. Her father, Juan L. Rivera preceded her in death. Visitation will be Friday, January 5, 1996 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave. Funeral Mass will be 1:00 p.m. at St. Monica’s Catholic Church on Saturday, January 6, 1996 with burial at South Lawn Cemetery.

DEVAULT, Robert Martin, 83, died Friday, December 29, 1995 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife, Muriel Sutherland DeVault; his son, Dennis (Robyn) Robert DeVault of Bismarck, ND; daughter-in-law, Linda DeVault of Scottsdale; grandchildren, Brian Douglass DeVault of Flagstaff, AZ, Donald Martin DeVault of Mesa, AZ, Kimberly Jo DeVault of Tucson, and Aaron Vincent DeVault of Scottsdale, AZ. He was born in Kansas City, MO, August 17, 1912. Was preceded in death by his son, Bruce Martin DeVault and parents, Harry DeVault and Inez C. Wilson DeVault. He graduated from the University of Arizona where he was a charter member of Alpha Kappa Psi honorary fraternity, and a member of Delta Chi fraternity. He was in business in Craig, CO before serving in the US Army in WWII. After the war he worked with Eagle Picher Mining and was associated with several accounting firms. He was a life long member of the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants and retired from Elmer Fox Westheimer and Co. The Memorial Service will be held January 4, at 3:00 p.m. at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Boys and Girls Club or the American Diabetes Society.

GEORGE, Bonita Maxine, 80, died Wednesday, January 3, 1996. Survived by husband, James J. George; son, William C. (Diane) George; daughters, Leigh Ann (Mark) Jennings and Sarah B. George; brother, Clyde Hunt; and sister, Lois Hunt; nine grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 5, 1996 at St. James United Methodist Church 3255 N. Refugio S. Gutierrez 87, of Tucson, passed away on January 2, 1996. Preceded in death by husband Manuel Gutierrez. She was a resident of Arizona for 72 years, 54 years in Tucson. Survived by daughters, Emma Hernandez, Delia (Joe) Romero, Esther Vidal, Gloria (Marcos) Ronquillo, Carmen (Paul) Garcia, Lydia (Elio) Leon, Adelina (Carlos) Lopez, Marylou (Manny) Daniels, Silvia (Oscar) Islas, Grace (Johnny) Rico, Sara (Raul) Moraga; sons, Manny (Socorro), and Robert (Ramona) Gutierrez; 51 grandchildren; 75 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will held on Friday, January 5, 1996 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Santa Cruz Church. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by TUCSON MORTUARY, INC.

Clair V. Hughes “Jim’ was born May 24, 1903 near Salem, MO and went to be with the Lord on December 31, 1995. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Zenia Mae; and a brother, Burton of Dallas, TX. His sister, Mildred preceded him in death. Jim and Zenia owned and operated the Arizona Sunshine School on the corner of Pima and Craycroft. The school taught children from nursery age through the 8th grade. Mr. Hughes served as Secretary of the Southern Arizona Independent Schools Association and was a past President of the Independent Schools Association of Arizona. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of Westerner International, an organization of clubs interested in the history of the American West. Jim was a past President of the Tucson Stamp Club and the Catalina Rotary, where he had 32 consecutive years of perfect attendance. He was also an active member of the B.P.O.E. C.V. Hughes was a long time member of the Tucson Reformed Church, serving as Elder and Clerk of the Consistory. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway), Thursday, January 4, 1996 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Graveside Services will be held at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Rd., Friday, January 5, 1996 at 10:00 a.m. A Memorial Service will be held at the Tucson Reformed Church, 5005 E. Winsett, Sunday, January 7 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tucson Reformed Church Memorial Fund.

LABARE, Wayne N., 80, of Tucson, died Tuesday, January 2, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; children, Richard Labare, Lorraine Smyser, Dianne French, all of Tucson; brother, Norman Labare; sisters, Harriett Bates, Ramona Lyons, all of VT; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 5, 1996 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. LIEFER, Richard W., 51, of Tucson, died Tuesday, January 2, 1996. Survived by his children, Richard Liefer, Gary Liefer, Lauria Liefer, Saundra Liefer; grandchildren, Ashley, Kayla, Chris, Dylan; parents, William and Elizabeth Liefer; sister, Pamela. He is also survived by Patricia Liefer and Constance Liefer. Mr. Liefer was employed by Hughes Aircraft. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 1996 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Interment will follow at East Lawn Palms Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mortuary, Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Arizona Cancer Center, 1501 N. Campbell, Tucson 85719. Mr. Liefer’s family would especially like to thank the men and women of St. Joseph’s Hospice for all their care and concern.

MENDIVIL, Gil V., 79, of Tucson, passed away January 1, 1996. He is survived by daughter, Nellie Mendivil; son, Frank Mendivil; sister, Mary Mendivil; and brothers, Ernest, Richard and Onorfe Mendivil, all of Tucson. Gil retired in 1978 after 26 years of service in the Civil Service Commission at Davis Monthan Air Force Base. He was a WWII Vet honored with a Purple Heart, and a longtime member of the Bushmasters and the Latin American Club. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 5 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral. Interment to follow at South Lawn Cemetery. MEYER, Gretchen, age 57, of Tucson, died December 31, 1995. She is survived by four children, Kimberly Johnson, Scott Flexman, Kevin Flexman and Erik Flexman; and five grandchildren, Joshua, Juliann and Racheal Flexman and Victoria and Richard Johnson.
