HENDRY, James E., 47, of St. David and formerly of Tucson, passed away December 23, 1995. Survived by son, Jason Hendry; daughter, Samantha Hendry, grandchildren, Aaron and Kyle Hendry, all of Leeds, England; father, Elmer J. Hendry and his wife Edith; mother, Linda N. Hendry; sister, Nancy Heckmaster of NE; grandparents, Nancy and Lynn Hodgson of Tucson. Visitation Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave., with Funeral Service and burial to follow.

JACOBS, Kenneth Wayne, 56, of Tucson, died December 22, 1995. Survived by daughters, Jennifer and Georgia Jacobs; parents, Wayne and Veda Jacobs; brother, David (Anna Sue) Jacobs; sister, Karen (Haskell) Deaver-Dighton. Private services were held Tuesday, December 26, 1995. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

JONES, Laura Charlotte Traweek, died of respiratory complications on December 26, 1995. Charlotte was born February 13, 1927 in Evanston, IL, the daughter of Rev. William Sihon Traweek and Jessie Laura McGaughey Traweek. Charlotte grew up in the Montana, and graduated from Lewistown High School. She attended Depaw University and the Birmingham Conservatory of Music, and graduated from Sacramento State University in 1952. Charlotte had a long and varied career in education, from a one room school in Bearpaw, MT to 36 years teaching mathematics in the schools of Sacramento. She also wrote a crossword puzzle series and designed children’s toys. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, University Women, the Sacramento Camelia Symphony, the Birmingham Southern Symphony, and the Methodist Church. Charlotte is survived by her husband, Ernie; and daughter, Constance of Tucson, AZ; and her son Stephen; daughter-in-law, Elisa; and grandsons, Sihon and Stuart of Kahaluu, HI. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 30, 1995, in the Chapel at First Methodist Church, 915 E. Fourth Street, Tucson. The family requests that no flowers be sent; donations may be made to one’s charity of choice.

JUAREZ, Manuel Roman, 17, a lifetime resident of Tucson, passed away December 23, 1995. Preceded in death by grandparents, Alberto and Mary Soto. Survived by father, Manuel Juarez; mother, Matilda Soto (Manuel Morales); brothers, Freddy (Kathy) and Rene (Karen); Eddie Leyvas, Jr. was considered one of his brothers; two nephews and two nieces; uncles, Joe (cousins, Mark, Anthony and Damian), Albert (Belen) (cousins) Albert, Jr., Steve, (Madi), Art (Kathy) (cousins, Freddy, Valerie, Dennis); aunts, Lamar (Eddie) (cousins, Eddie Jr. (Nora)), Joann (Spookey) (cousin, Roxanne), Sylvia (Alex) (cousins, Alex Jr., Elizabeth, Alexis). Also survived by other family members and many friends. Roman was a lovable young man and he will be in our hearts and thoughts forever. He will be missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. with rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. in SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave. Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 29 at St. Johns Catholic Church, 12th and Ajo. Burial in Holy Hope Cemetery.

KAHL, Vera L., 75, died December 25, 1995. Survived by her husband, John Kahl; sister-in-law, Henrietta Cantone of CA; niece, Madelyn Stemper of CA; many friends also survive. Mrs. Kahl is a member of the Pantano Congregation of Jehovah Witness Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cardiac Center at St. Joseph’s Hospital, 310 N. Wilmot, Tucson. Memorial service 7:30 p.m., Friday, December 29 at Pantano Congregation of Jehovah Witness, 8311 E. Stella with Brother Charles Bright officiating. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. KANE, Robert “Rob’ James, Jr., went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, December 27, 1995. Rob was born on February 12, 1964 in MN. He is survived by his parents, Bob and Judy Kane; sisters, Peggy (Doug) Porter, Jeanie (David) Schimke, Penny (Scott) Bolander, Mary Kane, all of Tucson, Patty (Kent) McMullen of Wenatchee, WA; brother, David (Anne) Kane of Gilbert, AZ; grandmothers, Mabel Hanson of Tucson, Margaret Kane of Hasting, MN; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. Rob’s family was very important to him, and the memories we share of his life will be cherished in our hearts forever. He was a dear son, loving brother and a Hall of Fame Uncle. He loved Golf, his work, music and life. Rob had been an employee at Rainbo Baking Co. for over ten years, where he held a number of positions in the sales department. Rob was diagnosed with a brain tumor in November, 1987. It was a long hard battle, but Rob was the victor. Jesus was the Light of Rob’s life and through his illness, God was glorified. Many people’s lives were touched as a result of Rob’s testimony. Memorial Services will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 29, 1995 at Casas Adobes Baptist Church, 2131 W. Ina Rd. KOHL, Anna K., 95, of Tucson, passed away December 26, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Harold Kohl Sr. She is survived by son, Dr. Harold (Rose Ann) Kohl Jr. of Tucson; grandchildren, Harold W. Kohl III of Houston, TX; Elizabeth (David) Strugeon of Tucson, John Thomas (Michelle) Kohl of Colorado Springs, CO; great-grandchildren, Kevin, John, and Jeffery Michael Kohl. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, December 29 at 10:00 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Van Wagner officiating. Interment will be private. LAHTI, Elizabeth M., entered into peace in Tucson on December 23, 1995. Dearly beloved wife of, Paul T. Lahti M.D. of 51 years. Loving mother of, Ted, Carol, Christine, Jim, Cathi, Linda. Loving mother-in-law of, Thomas Schlamme, Lola Lahti and Mike Smith. Loving grandmother of, Wilson, Emma and Joe Schlamme and of Stephen, David and Cheryl Lahti. Loving sister of, Barbara Beech and Donald Tabar. She was born May 4, 1920 in Detroit, MI. She grew up in Lamont, MI. She attended Wayne State University and earned her R.N. Degree at Grace Hospital in Detroit where she graduated second in her class. Elizabeth had many talents. She was an award winning artist, a pilot, a surgical nurse and active member of P.E.O., a Philanthropic organization. But her greatest gift was her gift for loving. She was warm, generous and kind person who was loved by all who knew her. Throughout her life she was a great source of strength and inspiration to her family and friends. She will be deeply missed but her loving spirit will live on forever in the hearts of the many many people who’s lives she touched. Memorial service will be held this Saturday, December 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Lutheran Church of the Foothills, 5102 N. Craycroft. Services will also be held Torch Lake Bellaire, MI next summer. LAIRD, Okey W., 88, of Tucson passed away at 1:35 p.m. December 24, 1995 at the Veterans Medical Center after a long illness. He was born April 29, 1907. Mr. Laird was a veteran of World War II, 5th Air Force Pacific Theater. Survivors include wife, Juanita (June) of Tucson; three sons, William Jr., Jack Okey, both of Las Vegas and Bill Laird of Lodi, OH; brother, C.W. (Rose) Laird of Tucson as well as six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Private services will be held at a later date. No flowers please. Memorial may be sent to The American Cancer Society. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

McCARTER, Dr. Elizabeth Davies, 84 years old, died on December 22, 1995. Dr. McCarter was born in Ohio to Thomas and Mary Bowers Davies on 10/01/11. She was preceded in death on September 8, 1995, by her husband, Dr. Robert McCarter (b. 1/01/01). Dr. Elizabeth was involved in a wide range of activities throughout her distinguished career including counseling at a Pennsylvania Juvenile penal institution social work in Pittsburgh, PA, laboratory teaching at Margaret Morrison Carnegie College for Women, music instruction in her school and civic and church groups and teaching various science subjects in secondary schools. In her pursuit of knowledge about non-orthodox methods of healing, she was awarded a Doctor of Naturopathy Degree from Bernadean University and later obtain a Doctor of Divinity Degree. She and Dr. Robert were residents of Tucson for over twenty years and together founded the “Bionomics Health Research Institute, ’ later renamed the “McCarter Center for Advanced Health Studies.’ Her most important works were the correspondence courses she facilitated through their work which enabled students in over 40 countries to study the science and philosophy of natural hygiene. She wrote many articles and spoke on many occasions sharing her personal story about her battle for health and instructing on her findings in her extensive and world-wide research for the attainment of better health. She was active in the Natural Hygiene Society and was a mentor and friend to many, many people. She will be greatly missed, and remembered with love, by her family, friends and students. A memorial service is planned for mid-January. Specifics will be announced in this paper. She is survived by her brother, Thomas Davies, who resides in Tucson.

OSBORN, Jennie M., on December 24, 1995 joined Walter, her husband of 54 years, in heaven. She was the loving mother of Sonia Carroll (Richard) of Novelty, OH and Jerry Lon Hatch of Strawberry, AZ; grandmother of five; great-grandmother of eight and proudly great-great grandmother of three. Also surviving is her brother, G.R. Brown and sister-in-law, Jeanne of Millbrae, CA. She leaves behind many dear and special friends and neighbors. There will be a celebration of her life on December 27 at the home she shared six months of each year with her daughter in Strawberry. There will also be a memorial service January 7 at the Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Burton, OH. Contributions in her memory may be made to AZ State Braille and Talking Book Library, 1030 N. 32nd St., Phoenix AZ 85008 or to the Diabetes Foundations, 7337 N. 19th., Phoenix, AZ 85021.

PETER, Ruth Burtschy, 84, of Tucson, died December 23, 1995, leaving a legacy of love. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; her children, Charlyne and Larry; grandchildren, Kim, Shannon, and Kevin; and great-granddaughter, Ashley. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Rosella; brother, Jerome; son-in-law, Bob; daughter-in-law, Gayle, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and six brothers and sisters. Ruth was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH and moved to Tucson in 1977. Mom will remain in our hearts as our model for unconditional love, playfulness, grace, dedication, strength, humility, and above all, her willingness to share herself fully with everyone she knew. A memorial mass will be offered on Friday, December 29, 1995 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Cyrils Catholic Church. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway).

RAGSDALE, Elizabeth Jo, 67, of Tucson, died December 26, 1995. She is survived by her children, Paula (Ken) Williams and Bobby (Sherry) Ragsdale; grandchildren, Ken (Teresa), Andrea (John), Laurel (David), and Nikki (James); great-grandchildren, Paul, Brittney, Ashley, Michael and Jessika; a sister, Virginia of Berryville, AR also survives. Cryptside services will be held at South Lawn Mausoleum on Saturday, December 30, 1995 at 2:30 p.m. Arrangements by HEATHER MORTUARY.

SCARVIE, Rev. Walter B. Sr. 97, of Tucson, died December 22, 1995. Preceded in death by his first wife, Florence E. Scarvie; son, Kenneth S. Scarvie; second wife, Evelyn T. Scarvie; three sisters and two brothers. Survived by son, Walter B. Scarvie Jr., of Washington, DC; step-sons, Robert W. Sankey of Tucson and Harold P. Sankey of Atlanta GA; two sisters; four granddaughters and four step-grandchildren. He graduated Valedictorian from Luther College, Decorah IO in 1920 and Luther Theological Seminary St. Paul MS in 1923. He was ordained to Lutheran Ministry in 1923. He served as faculty member of Luther College (1925-27), Pastor of St. Petri Lutheran Church, Story City, IO (1927-37) and of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Detroit MI (1937-64). In recognition of his work as Michigan Chairman of American Relief for Norway, he was presented in 1946 the Order of St. Olav, Norway’s highest civilian decoration, by King Haakon VII. He was also designated Distinguished Alumnus of Luther College. Subsequent to his retirement in 1964, he served as assistant pastor in Seattle, WA and Long Beach CA through 1971. He retired to Tucson in 1985, becoming a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in 1986. A funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m., Saturday, December 30 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 5601 E. Broadway. Visitation at the church one half hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Detroit, MI. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, Memorial Fund. Arrangements by BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott.

SPHAR, Mary K., 78 years old, died December 26, 1995. She was a 50 year resident. Survivors are husband, James H. of Tucson; son, James (Diana); son, Don (Susan); three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. She was a mother, teacher and right hand for 57 years. Mary graduated from University of Illinois. She loved children and has educated and sent many of them into society bolstered by her wisdom. Visitation will be Friday, December 29, 1995 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 30, 1995 at the Mortuary.

STREBEL, Valentine Joseph, 83, of Tucson, died December 25, 1995. Husband of, Georgia E. of Tucson; father of, JoAnn Pogue, Mary Ann Baker, Judy Doyle, Marjorie Noe, all of Indiana; step-father of, Lloyd Windisch of Tucson; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother of, Marie Strebel of IN. Scripture service at ABBEY FUNERAL CHAPEL Friday, December 29 at 7:00 p.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Church Saturday, December 30 at 9:00 a.m. Interment Holy Hope Cemetery. SULLIVAN, David R., 78, resident of Tucson, died Tuesday, December 27, 1995. Survived by wife, Virginia; son, Tim (Katherine) of CO; daughter, Susan (Daniel) Naylor NM; seven grandchildren. Mr. Sullivan was a graduate of the University of Arizona, a veteran of WW II and member of the BPOE, Lions Club and VFW. SWEENEY, Daniel R., 69, of San Francisco, died December 21, 1995. Survived by brothers, John of Barstow, CA., Jerry of Tucson, dear friend Zoanne Nordstrom of CA; numerous nieces and nephews. Dan was a Stevedore and member of the ILWU. He sailed with the Merchant Marine during WWII and served in combat with the US army during the Korean War. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday at VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, with interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Services conducted by VALLEY FUNERAL HOME, 2545 N. TRUJILLO, Mercedes A., 82, of Tucson, passed away December 27, 1995. She is survived by sons, Carlos (Rosa) and Gene (Mary) Trujillo; sisters, Evelyn (Tony) Espinoza, Margaret Atkinson; brothers, George and Robert Atkinson; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, (Center Chapel), 240 S.
