BENAVIDEZ, Jose P., 74, of Tucson, passed away November 22, 1995. Survived by daughters, Rachel B. (Juan) Fraijo, Belinda B. (Leonardo) Espinoza, Diana B. (Ira) Watkins; son, Manuel T. (Barbara) Benavidez; brother, Manuel Benavidez; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Visitation will be held Monday, November 27 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be held on Tuesday, November 28 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Church. Interment to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by TUCSON MORTUARY, INC.

CEBATIS, Loretta G., died November 20, 1995 in California. She was born Loretta June Gallagher in Chicago, IL on June 23, 1907. She graduated from Providence High of Chicago in 1925. She married Charles F. Cebatis in Chicago in February 6, 1943. In June 1951 they moved from Chicago to Tucson, Arizona. While Charlie established Arizona Lithographers, Loretta worked as a legal secretary for attorney, Mr. McFall. In 1955 she began working for the Internal Revenue Service where she was a tax examiner. She retired in May of 1973. Her retirement years were filled with traveling and playing the piano for the Seniors Groups at St. Cyril’s Church. Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Cebatis. She is survived by a brother, Joseph Gallagher of Mt. Home, AR; two daughters, Carol Humphrey of Granite Bay, CA and Irene Winchell of Atlanta, GA; and three grandsons. A Memorial Mass will be said at St. Cyril’s Church on Thursday, November 30 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Vincents Hospice, 1783 Tribute Road, Suite D, Sacramento, CA 95815.

GARKOW, Raymond E., 81, passed away November 22, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Cecelia C. Garkow; daughter, Penny Quintero; granddaughter, Patrice Quintero, both of Las Vegas, NV. Ray and Cecelia were the “best of friends’ in Waterloo, IA and it took 62 years for the their paths to cross again. They were married in 1990 in Tucson, AZ. Ray was a professional chef and a longtime member of the Merchant Marines. Ray will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 28 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

HORN, Ophelia Jewel, 89, a Tucson resident for 64 years. Survived by son, Wilbert Emery (Roberta) Dolph, Jr.; daughters, Lois Mae Craig and Geraldine Dolph; grandchildren, Wilbert E. (Renee) Dolph III, Kenneth A. (Suzanne) Dolph, Scott M. Dolph, Cheryl (Magnus) Karlsson, Roberta J. (Jim) Scordato, Pamela M. (Dave) Roberts, Robert E. Craig, Jr.; 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; sister, Thelma Bolden; nephew, Richard (Polly) Bond; two half brothers and one half sister. She was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church. Services Monday, 12:00 Noon, EVERGREEN MORTUARY. Friends may call 11:00 a.m. till service time EVERGREEN MORTUARY and CEMETERY, N. RIZZO, Albert M.D., 74, died November 22, 1995. Survived by his daughter, Debra (George) Anderson of MI. Arrangements by BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

SANCHEZ, Albert Castro, 75, of Tucson passed on Thursday, November 23, 1995. He is survived by three beloved daughters, and one son; two brothers; two sisters; 10 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; along with many family members and a host of friends. Funeral Services will be 7:00 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 1995 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave., with visitation for family and friends from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.

WADE, Ronald E., 83, of Tucson, died November 23, 1995. Born January 18, 1912 in Ann Arbor, MI. Survived by wife, Belle M. Wade; sons, Donald Wade, Monte Wade; daughter, Sandra Haddix, all of Tucson; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren. Graveside Services Monday, 10:00 a.m. L.D.S. Cemetery, 4001 N. Alvernon. WOLFE, Lorene H., born on January 21, 1922 in Shawnee, OK, died on November 23, 1995 in Tucson, AZ. A wonderful and beloved wife, mom, and grandmother and a great person. Her son Mike and her granddaughter, Pami were awaiting her arrival in Heaven. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Francis T. Wolfe; her daughters, Lujuana Wolfe Tredwell and Marti E. Morey; son-in-law, Wes Morey, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Jean Fedigan; her nine grandchildren, Elizabeth, Carol, John, Mike, Rick, Margaret, Shanna, April and Tracy; and her great granddaughter, Brenda and her dog, Cricket. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 27, 1995 at St. Ambrose Church, 300 S. Tucson Blvd. Burial to follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. ZIMMERMAN, Walter R., 77, of Tucson, AZ., formerly of Youngstown, OH., died Thursday, November 23, 1995. Survived by wife, Betty; son, David Walter Zimmerman; daughters, Marcia (Roger) Schmidt and Nancy Zimmerman; brother, Lawrence Zimmerman; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Preceded in death by daughter, A. Jane Griffin and sister, Jean Zimmerman. Walter served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. Retired pharmacist, owning his business in Youngstown. Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 1995 at EAST LAWN PALMS CHAPEL, 5801 E. Grant Rd. with Rev. Bill Killian officiating. HERSCHELL, Claude Alexander, 63, passed away November 21, 1995 of cancer. His memory will be cherished by wife, Jean Ann; son, Randy and daughter-in-law, Tricia (Lovering) of Tucson; daughter, Hollee and son-in-law, Scott (Smith) of Las Vegas; grandchildren, Chad, Rick, Ryan, Heather and Heath. Claude retired as supervisor with American Airlines after a 36-year career in Toronto and Tucson. He is also survived by sister, Sandra; and nephew Barry. Claude will be missed by family and many friends in Toronto and Tucson. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, November 29 at 5:30 p.m. at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 9952 East 22nd Street. The family appreciates remembrances made to Carondelet Hospices Services, Ronald McDonald House or your favorite charity. Interment will be in Ontario.

SALAZAR, Vicente, 77, passed away November 20, 1995. Survived by daughters, Maria M. (Martin) Gonzales, and RosaMaria (Eddie) Salazar; sons, Vicente Jr. (Amalia), David (Celia), Victor (Grace), Miguel (Dale) and Luis (Frances) Salazar and Joe (Gloria) Duran; sisters, Josefa Rodriguez, Ernestina Dominguez, and Viviana Garza; brothers, Ruben and Ricardo Salazar; 35 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 26, 1995 TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. Stone Ave. 4:00 to 10:00 p.m., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Monday 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Hope Cemetery. He was also in WWII.

SILBERSCHLAG, Edna U., 96, of Tucson, died November 22, 1995. Preceded in death by husband, Lorenz Fred of River Forest, IL, and son Howard of Guttenberg, IA. Survived by son, Russell (Lynnette) of Tucson, and Jeanette Silberschlag of Guttenberg, IA. Grandmother of six, great grandmother of five, great great grandmother of two. BRETT, Hyman “Hy’, 80, passed away November 22, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Fay; sons, Art (Jane) and Martin (Diane) his adoring grandchildren, great granddaughter and sisters. Hy was an accomplished furrier. He and his wife were in business locally as Mr. Brett Furs and Fashions for many years. Hy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be forever remembered for his joy in life, his famous jokes, and his wonderful stories. He will be missed greatly. CRAWFORD, Flora M., 77, of Marana, AZ, died November 19, 1995. Born May 27, 1918 in Porum, OK. She was a member of Praise Center Assembly of God Church in Avra Valley. Survived by husband of 61 years, Orbin Crawford of Marana; sisters, Inez Vaught of Tulsa, OK, Anna Clopton of Ft. Worth, TX, Maxine Woodson of Chelsea, OK; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. GABEL, Velta Becker, died on November 22, 1995. She was born in Toledo, OH on January 28, 1915. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank H. Gabel. Survivors include daughter, Nancy Buck of Tucson, AZ; son, Jerry Gabel of Mesa, AZ; sister, Suzanne Kasch and brother, Tom Becker, both of Toledo, OH; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at the Chapel, Trinity Presbyterian Church, 400 E. University Blvd. at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 24, 1995. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Arizona Kidney Foundation, Region II, 4019 N. 44th St., Phoenix, AZ 85018.

GARIGAN, Mary Jane, 71, died November 20, 1995. Mother of Elizabeth Garigan and husband Doyle Soper of Tucson and Tim (Jane) Garigan of Tucson; grandmother of Erin Garigan, Kelsey Garigan, Kaitlin Garigan, Tim Tullar and Flynn Soper; numerous other family members also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband and her sister. In lieu of flowers, donations to Salpointe Endowment Fund, 1545 E. Copper, Tucson, AZ 85719 would be appreciated. MERRIAM, Galen F., 73, of Tucson, died November 21, 1995. He was co-founder of Home of Guiding Hands in Lakeside, CA and was a WWII Navy Veteran. Survived by wife, Roselie Merriam of Tucson; sons, Micheal Merriam of Tucson, William Merriam of Lakeside, CA; sisters, Billie Plunkett of San Antonio, TX, Norma Christiani of Sarasota, FL; and one grandchild. Graveside Services Friday 10:00 a.m. Evergreen Cemetery, N. Oracle and W. Miracle Mile. Memorial contributions may be made to Home of Guiding Hands, 10025 Los Ranchitos Rd., Lakeside, CA 92040 in memory of Galen Merriam. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY and CEMETERY.

MITTENDORF, Virginia Benoit, Preceded in death by husband, Eugene “Mitty’. Survived by daughters, Peg Mittendorf and Betty (Herschel) Craig, Tucson; brother, Robert Benoit, Los Angeles; sister-in-law, Jo Benoit, Sacramento; and one niece and nephew. Mittendorf was born in Las Animas, CO on August 16, 1912. Her family moved to Gary, IN in 1915, where she attended school and was graduated from Emerson High. She attended the University of Kansas and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, Phi Chapter.
Mittendorf was active in the broadcasting and television industry, and was well known in Tucson and Southern Arizona for her `Visiting With Virginia’ television show. Her career began in 1933 at WIND Radio, Chicago, where she served as secretary, broadcaster, and Traffic Manager from 1933-38. Mittendorf was on the Board of Directors of WLOL Radio in Minneapolis, 1943-46; broadcaster and Traffic Manager of KOPO (later, KOLD) Radio, Tucson from 1947-53; and Traffic Manager, Producer and television personality at KOPO/KOLD-TV from 1953-64.
Mittendorf was a member, and first Arizona President, of American Women in Radio and Television; the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences; American Federation of Musicians, Life Member of Local 771; Tucson Theatre Guild, member and actor; Director of the Pima Co. Children’s Milk Fund; Women’s Commission, Tucson Chamber of Commerce; Pan-Hellenic Association; Alpha Chi Omega Alumni Association; D.A.R.; Soroptimist Club; Mobile Meals of Tucson, Board Member and volunteer driver; and Assistance League of Tucson.
She was listed in “Who’s Who in American Women, ’ 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions, and “Who’s Who in the West, ’ Vol. VII. In 1991, Virginia Mittendorf was the first woman inducted into the Arizona Broadcaster’s Association Hall of Fame. She was featured in Bonnie Henry’s “Another Tucson’ in 1992.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 24 at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee, with Rev. Patrick Cunningham officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Community Hospice, 4330 N. Campbell, Tucson 85718; or Unity, 1901 NW Blue Parkway, Unity Village, MO 64065-0001.
