KEATING, William Z., Sr., 98, of Tucson, died Tuesday, December 5, 1995. Survived by his son, Bob Keating; grandchildren, Eddie, Linda, and Karen. Bill, a US Navy, World War I veteran, was a member of Epes Randolph Lodge #32, F and AM, Tucson Scottish Rite Bodies, Sabbar Shrine Temple, and the Order of Amaranth. He was a Past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star, and a Past Commander of the American Legion. KLEIN, Eugene F., 74, died suddenly and quietly Tuesday, December 5, 1995. He was a graduate of Colorado School of Mines, Class of `43 and maintained close contact through the years. He traveled extensively in the Western United States for business and pleasure. He is survived by wife, Sally; daughter, Beverly (Barry) Weissenborn; sister, Virginia Shipley of Plano, TX; nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 1:00 p.m. at Casas Adobes Congregational Church, 6801 N. Oracle Rd. SCHIESEL, Herman S., 94, of Tucson, died December 5, 1995. Survived by daughters, Rebecca Stewart, Gloria Schiesel, both of Los Angeles, CA, Cynthia Schiesel of Tucson; son, David (Linda) Schiesel of Tucson; granddaughters, Sharon (Howard) Schiesel-Chorost, Karen Schiesel, both of Tucson; great grandsons, Steven Chorost and Robert Chorost, both of Tucson; sister, Esther Karlin of FL. Predeceased by wife, Rose Schiesel, May 1973. Mr. Schiesel was a member of Local #741, Plumbers and Steamfitters Union and on the Board of Directors of the Tucson Hearing Society. BALENTINE, Edith M., 94, died December 4, 1995. Survived by her son, Darrell (Sue) Balentine; daughter, Ruby (Dick) Moeller; daughter-in-law, Ruth Fromm of CA; sister, Arah Blair of TX; 13 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her dearest friends and staff of the Alpha Omega Adult Care Home and Villa Campana. Mrs. Balentine was preceded in death by her son, Phil and daughter, Janet and former husband, James Mark Balentine. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to one’s favorite charity. BRITTEN, Lily Hopkins, retired cattle rancher, teacher and homemaker, died December 1, 1995. She was born June 3, 1906 in Strawberry, Arizona on a ranch her parents had homesteaded in the late 1800s. She grew up in the Verde Valley and graduated from Tempe Normal School in 1925. Lily taught school for six years in the Phoenix area. After marrying Clarence Britten in 1931 they lived on the Buenos Aires Ranch in Sasabe, later moving to a house in the Sam Hughes neighborhood where she lived until her death. She and her husband owned and operated a ranch southwest of Tucson for many years.
Through the years Lily was an active community volunteer and was listed in the 1958 edition of “Who’s Who in Arizona’. Her activities included the Tucson Woman’s Club (president, 1947-48); Sam Hughes Parent Teacher’s Club (president, 1945-46); Mansfield PTA board; Tucson Community Council Board; Tucson Community Chest Board (treasurer); Girl Scout Council Board; and Republican Precinct Committeewoman. She was also affiliated with Tucson Cowbelles; (an auxiliary of Arizona Cattle Growers’ Association); Daughters of the Nile; and a fifty-year number of Chapter E, PEO. For many years she was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Old Pueblo Club and the Mountain Oyster Club.
Lily is survived by her daughter, Wanda Shattuck (Lemuel), Tucson; granddaughter, Pamela Thyret (Russell), Pasadena, CA; brother, Dave Hopkins, Camp Verde, AZ; sister, Effie Dot Hopkins, Tucson; niece, Mary Lyons, Lake Montezuma, AZ; niece, Marilyn Murray (George), Tucson; and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Britten, a prominent cattle buyer and rancher, who died in 1970.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 8 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 824 North Second Avenue. CRANDELL, Iryl Lucille, 86, of Tucson, died December 1, 1995. Mrs. Crandell was born in Hart, MI August 6, 1909 and moved to AZ in 1947. She is survived by her children, Kay (Will) Bingham of Phoenix, Joan (Patrick) Pate of Sierra Vista and John P. Crandell of Tucson; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis Lusk of MI and Barbara Wilbur of Tucson. Also survive as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. She was a registered nurse at Tucson Medical Center and retired 25 years ago in 1970. She enjoyed bowling up until three years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph in 1993 and a brother Lyle Thorp in 1993. Memorial Services will be held at the Lakes, 5666 E. He owned and operated De Spain’s Furniture and Repair Service. Previously, he had been employed by J. C. Penney’s for over 18 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Marie (Kitty) De Spain. He is survived by his loving wife and childhood sweetheart, La Joyce; son, Johnny Clayton; father, John W. De Spain, Jr.; sister, Mary Rose Baron (Tom); brother, John W. De Spain, III (Angela); sister-in-law, Laurie Hampton (Wade); brother-in-law, John D. FORD, Grace K. (nee Johnston), peacefully passed away on December 2, 1995 at Tucson General Hospital/Hospice Family Care, Tucson, Arizona at the age of 85. Grace was born and raised in Elm Creek, Manitoba, Canada and received her R.N. training at Misericordia Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, graduating in 1931. She was dedicated to her nursing profession and those in her care. Through the years she gave compassionate, loving care to patients in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Toronto and London, Ontario, Canada and Chicago, Illinois. Grace retired in 1975 and moved to Tucson, Arizona where she did many years of volunteer work at Tucson General Hospital. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter and her husband, Sandra and Robert Maxfield and their children Marla and Robert of Tucson, Arizona; and her son and his wife, Richard and Diana Ford and their children James and Darren of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She will also be lovingly remembered by her sister, Muriel Woods of Brandon, Manitoba; and her brother, Lyle Johnston of Abbottsford, British Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Fred Johnston from Saskatchewan, Canada.

FORD, Olive R., 80, died December 3, 1995 in Tucson. Survived by two daughters, Liz Ford of Tucson, Kathy Compton of San Jose, CA; one son, Michael Ford of FL; one brother, Warren Roberg of NH; and two sisters, Edith McSweeny, Leona DeWolf of MA. GALLAGHER, Hugh Joseph, 80, died at home on December 1, 1995 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Gallagher and granddaughter, Tracy Lou Stai. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet; son, Patrick (Dawn) Gallagher and children, Nathan and Chelsea; daughters, Donna Mobley and children Kristen and Rachel, Loretta (Vince) Allen and children Laura and Cristi Romig, Maureen (Rick) Peters and children Matthew and Sarah, Elizabeth Gallagher and daughter Slobhan, Trudi Browning, Karen’s children, Hugh D. (Karen) Schrank and Tricia (John) Mendoza; five great-grandchildren; brother, Fred Gallagher of Santa Barbara, CA and many loving relatives and friends. As a young man he worked in the coal mines in Kincaid, IL. In 1940 he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine Service, graduating from Dobey School of Navigation in San Francisco, CA. He was discharged from the service in 1945 and moved to Tucson. He operated Gallagher Plumbing and Sewer Service and Gallagher’s Trailer Court on North First Avenue. He also operated the Hitching Post Tavern on North Stone Avenue. Hugh was a member of the American Legion Post #0905 in Kincaid, IL, the Elk’s Lodge BPO 385 in Tucson and past President of North First Avenue Property Owners Association. Mass will be said at 11:00 a.m. Saturday the 9th of December at Santa Catalina Mission, 14380 N. Oracle Road. Donations in Hugh’s memory may be made to Santa Catalina Mission, 14380 N. Oracle Road. HACKE, Gene Arthur, 67, died Monday, December 4, 1995. Born August 23, 1928 in Pella, Iowa. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Anita C. Hacke; children, Pati (Rick) Cook, Kathryn (Jeff) Nordensson, Susan (Joe) Elo and Bryan (Sherri) Hacke; also grandchildren, Christopher and Timothy Nordensson, Erin Loveland, Eric and Elaine Elo, Jessica, April, Jamie and Aaron Hacke; also survived by brother, James Hacke, Jr. of Griffin, GA; and sister, Winifred Bliss of Arlington, TX. Gene was an Army Veteran and retired special education teacher from the Sunnyside School District. He was an active square dancer for many years in Arizona.
