ALLER, Dr. Alvin R., born September 5, 1906 in S.W. Kansas near Johnson, to Will and Loma Aller, died Tuesday, December 5, 1995 in Nampa, ID.
Beginning as a cowboy, he received a B.A. in biology from Bethany College, Lindsborg, KS and an M.S. in biology from Kansas State U. Marrying Florence Snowbarger in 1930, Alvin was Vice President, then Acting President of Bresee College in Hutchinson, KS before moving to Nampa, ID to teach history, biology and pilot training at Northwest Nazarene College (NNC) from 1936 to 1942. Appointed an officer in the Naval Air Force in 1942, he taught navigation on bases in Washington State, Indiana, and Florida. Leaving the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 1946, he obtained his Ph.D in Botany from Oregon State University in 1949.
Returning to NNC as Chair of the Division of Natural Science and Mathematics and Professor of Biology, he was a founder and officer of the Idaho Academy of Sciences, and a (summer) Ranger Naturalist at Glacier National Park.
From 1958 till his retirement in 1972 Alvin was a Botany Professor at the University of Idaho where he was a leader at the Campus Christian Center and founder/sponsor of Bresee Fellowship. He gave the Layman’s Challenge at the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast in 1972.
From 1980 to 1985 the Aller’s lived in Tucson to be near their grandchildren, Jay and Joyce. Alvin was active at the Oro Valley Nazarene Church as a Kennedy Personal Evangelism trainer. Returning to Nampa in 1985, he established the NNC Arboretum. Florence died in 1993, the year Alvin published his autobiography, “From Kansas Cowpuncher to University Professor: One Pilgrim’s Progress.’ Author of a dozen published professional papers and elected to American Men of Science, Gamma Sigma Delta, Leaders in American Science, Phi Delta Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma XI, he was also a member/officer of the Lion’s Club for 30 years. But Alvin will be remembered more than anything as a man who had experienced God’s Love, and lived his life in love for, and giving to his Lord, and to others.
Alvin is survived by his brother, Earl of Spokane; his son, Wayne of Granada Hills, CA; and by grandchildren, Jay of Pasadena, CA and Joyce of Denver, CO.
The funeral will take place on December 9 in Nampa. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Alvin R. Aller Biology Scholarship Fund, % NNC, Nampa, ID 83686.

ATKINSON, Eileen Marie (Hermes), 78, was received into eternal glory with Christ on December 4, 1995. She was widowed in 1983, preceded in death by her loving husband, Terrence Atkinson. She is survived by her daughter, Candace McDougal and son-in-law, Dennis McDougal of Overland Park, KS. Also her daughter, Keith Ann Atkinson of Albuquerque, NM. She was “Granny’ to four grandchildren, Amy, Marc, Sara and Teresa. She was “Aunt Eileen’ to ten nieces and nephews. Her brother, L.P. Hermes, and his wife, Jane, reside in Tucson. A sister-in-law, June Hermes lives in Findlay, OH. Though born in Chicago, she spent the next 20 years in El Paso, TX. She has made Tucson her home since 1937. She was active in the Tucson community which she loved, dedicating much of her time to volunteering. Some special interests included Literacy Volunteers of America and serving with several local hospital auxiliaries. She was a past president of the U of A Newman sustaining board. Her giving spirit will be missed. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral. However, family and friends will be welcomed at a memorial service in her honor. This will be held at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 9. Donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
BITSKO, Anna, 94, died December 7, 1995. Preceded in death by her husband, Andrew. Beloved mother of John (Helen) Bell and Ethel Dunscombe; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren also survive. CLARK, Ann N., 99, of Tucson, passed away December 6, 1995. She was born December 5, 1896 in Las Vegas, NM. She is survived by grandson, Patrick Clark of Bridgewater, NJ; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Clark was a teacher and author. She was awarded the Newbury Award for children’s literature as well as the Regina Award bestowed by the Catholic Church. Mrs. Clark worked throughout Latin America as an educational advisor, and was a career teacher with the Indian Service. Visitation will be held Friday, December 8 at TUCSON MORTUARY, (North Chapel), 204 S. EDWARDS, John Charles, passed on to be with our Lord, December 6, 1995. He was born in Sherman, TX on April 28, 1943. Loving husband to Ginger; father of Bill, Jerry, Jeff, Shauna and Dena; grandfather to Stephanie, all of Tucson; son of Hattie Edwards of Globe. John was a graduate of Globe High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended Eastern Arizona College and received his masters degree at NAU. He began his teaching career by setting up the Automotive Technology Program at Amphitheater High School. His program won many awards and he touched the hearts and lives of many young people. FISCHER, Elmer M., 86, died December 6, 1995. Survived by wife of 56 years, Loretta M. of Tucson; father of Ronald L. Fischer of Austin, TX, Ruth Crawford of Tempe, AZ, Dennis C. Fischer of Morristown, TN and Timothy Fischer of Medford, OR; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; also survived by four brothers and two sisters. Elmer worked as an electrical lineman with IDEW 769. He was a member of T.O.T.S. Old Timers Baseball team. LANGE, Peter Saunders, CDR USN (Ret), 56, of Tucson, passed away on November 28, 1995. Pete grew up in Tucson attending Roskruge JHS (where he met Sue Fuller who later became his wife), Tucson HS, and UA (Class of `61). He served 21 years active duty, primarily in the Western Pacific. He retired in 1982 and became active in community service projects in Prince William County, VA. He and Sue moved back to Tucson in January of this year to be closer to family and the Tucson Community that they had enjoyed so much in their youth. He is survived by his wife, Sue Fuller Lange, of Tucson; children, Julie Lange of Centreville, VA and Brett Lange of New York City; brothers, Michael Lange of Tucson, Robert Lange of Washington D.C., Tom Lange of Colorado Springs, and Steve Lange of Houston; and sisters, Gretchen Collins of Stonington, CT and Theresa Topic of Peterborough, Ont, Canada. BENNER, Keith Charles, age 28, passed away December 3, 1995 in Tucson. Born January 2, 1967 in Quakertown, PA. Keith was part owner of the “Taking Care of Business’ bar in Tucson and worked for Tucson Plumbing. He is survived by his mother, Sarah K. Benner; brothers, Joseph, Larry, Jeff, Robert and Richard Benner; six grandchildren also survive. The funeral service will be held 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 8, 1995 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. EVANS, Doris F., 79 years old, passed away on Monday, December 4, 1995. She was a Tucson resident for 35 years. Husband, Robert D. Evans preceded her in death. GALLAGHER, Hugh Joseph, 80, died at home on December 1, 1995 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Gallagher and granddaughter, Tracy Lou Stai. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet; son, Patrick (Dawn) Gallagher and children, Nathan and Chelsea; daughters, Donna Mobley and children Kristen and Rachel, Loretta (Vince) Allen and children Laura and Cristi Romig, Maureen (Rick) Peters and children Matthew and Sarah, Elizabeth Gallagher and daughter Slobhan, Trudi Browning, Karen’s children, Hugh D. (Karen) Schrank and Tricia (John) Mendoza; five great-grandchildren; brother, Fred Gallagher of Santa Barbara, CA and many loving relatives and friends. He was born October 21, 1915 in Tovey, IL to Frank and Kate Gallagher. As a young man he worked in the coal mines in Kincaid, IL. In 1940 he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine Service, graduating from Dobey School of Navigation in San Francisco, CA. He was discharged from the service in 1945 and moved to Tucson. He operated Gallagher Plumbing and Sewer Service and Gallagher’s Trailer Court on North First Avenue. He also operated the Hitching Post Tavern on North Stone Avenue. Hugh was a member of the American Legion Post #0905 in Kincaid, IL, the Elk’s Lodge BPO 385 in Tucson and past President of North First Avenue Property Owners Association. Mass will be said at 11:00 a.m. Saturday the 9th of December at Santa Catalina Mission, 14380 N. Oracle Road. Donations in Hugh’s memory may be made to Santa Catalina Mission, 14380 N. Oracle Road. HACKE, Gene Arthur, 67, died Monday, December 4, 1995. Born August 23, 1928 in Pella, Iowa. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Anita C. Hacke; children, Pati (Rick) Cook, Kathryn (Jeff) Nordensson, Susan (Joe) Elo and Bryan (Sherri) Hacke; also grandchildren, Christopher and Timothy Nordensson, Erin Loveland, Eric and Elaine Elo, Jessica, April, Jamie and Aaron Hacke; also survived by brother, James Hacke, Jr. of Griffin, GA; and sister, Winifred Bliss of Arlington, TX.
