FRANTZ, Elizabeth Phyllis, 86, passed away December 19, 1995. She was preceded in death by her friend of nearly six decades, Eva Allen Royce. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and George Ketchum and many nieces and nephews. She was born in Friend, NE, January 29, 1909, the daughter of Arthur Hewes and Anna (Moore) Frantz. She graduated from the University of Nebraska and Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City. She taught many years before coming to Tucson in 1946 where she taught at Tucson High School and was a charter member of the faculty of Catalina High School. She was a member of the Pima County Retired Teachers and Delta Kappa Gamma. Friends may call at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20, 1995. ALWINE, Carl, of Tucson, AZ died December 17, 1995. Born, May 13, 1927 to Gay and Goldie Alwine. married Deloris Loeffler, April 16, 1971. Children, John, David and step-daughter, Karen Hertel; 6 grandchildren; brother, Kenneth, James; sisters, Lillian, Martha, Esther and Thelma; aunt, Hazel Gray. Preceded in death by daughter, Carla Sue, brothers, Richard and Raymond and parents. Carl served in the Army, WWII, 1945 to 1947. Member of Elks Lodge #2532, American Legion #36, VFW #3019 and Eagles Aeries #2303. Carl will be missed by his loving family and many good friends. His sense of humor was the best. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan and he loved fishing. Memorial services will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Goshen. Burial will be at the Elkhart Country Cemetery. JONES, George M. Brigadier General, USA Ret., died December 16, 1995 at 5:10 a.m. at the age of 84. Jones was a much decorated servant of his country. He was born in Memphis, TN, February 22, 1911. He graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1935. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant of infantry in the Regular Army by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. General Jones originally served in the 24th Infantry Regiment and the 501 Parachute Battalion. In November 1942, he joined the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment en route to Australia. He became the commanding officer of the 503rd Parachute Regiment and led them in action throughout New Guinea, including the Dutch New Guinea campaign in World War II. He later commanded and jumped with the 503rd Regimental Combat Team at Mindoro Island, Philippines, and the epic airborne operation to recapture Corregidor in the Philippine Islands. General Jones presented the American flag on recaptured Corregidor to General McArthur. General Jones then commanded the 503rd Regimental Combat Team in the recapture of the Negros Island in the Philippines. In 1945, General Jones assumed command of the parachute Training Regiment, Ft. Benning, GA, and later was designated as Director of Training for Airborne School. In 1947 General Jones was assigned to the office of the Director of Plans and Operations of the War Department General Staff. General Jones later attended the National War College and in 1952 was appointed Chief of Staff, XVIII Airborne Corps, Ft. Bragg, NC. General Jones served in Korea in 1953 and in 1954 was appointed Senior Advisor of the Korean Army Training Center. In January 1958 General Jones assumed command of the United States Army Special Warfare Center and Commandant, United States Army Special Warfare School, Ft. Bragg, NC. General Jones was instrumental in developing the initial course in counter guerrilla operations for both the United States and other countries. In 1966 General Jones became the Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army, Alaska and Commanding General Yukon Command and Ft. Wainwright where he retired in 1968. The Battle Simulation Station at Ft. Wainwright is named in his honor. He is most proud to have been a part of General Eisenhower’s 3-man advanced study group with open access world-wide. General Jones’ awards include the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit with Oak-leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal with Oak-leaf Cluster, and Air Medal. After General Jones’ retirement, he continued to serve his country and his community and was very active in working with the Catalina Council of Boy Scouts, Therapeutic Riding of Tucson, Inc. (TROT), and the Rincon Rotary Club. General Jones is survived by his wife, Kathleen Rector-Jones; his son, Karl H. Jones of Fairbanks, AK; his daughters, Elizabeth Anne Davies of Tucson, AZ, Sylvia Jones of Show Low, AZ; and his son, Paul H. Jones, and his ‘acquired’ (step) daughters, Barbara Kathleen Rector and Susan E. Rector Semmens and ‘acquired’ (step) son, Walter William Rector. He is survived by a brother, Frank Jones of Memphis, TN, and sisters Pauline Jones Hord also of Memphis and Louise (Babe) Higgs of Germantown, TN, and 13 grandchildren. General Jones’ first wife, Helen Jones, predeceased him in 1982. Celebration of his services will be held at Catalina Methodist Church, 2700 E. Speedway on Thursday, December 21, 1995 at 5:00 p.m. All are invited to gather with the family in the social hall after the memorial service to share memories of the General (Grandpa George) over a light supper. General Jones will be buried at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, with full military honors. LYNFORD, Lloyd Eff. Born March 19, 1943 in Toledo, OH. Mr. Eff passed away December 17, 1995 at the Veterans Hospital in Marion, IN following a brief illness. He was raised in Angola, IN and spent most of his adult life in the Ft. Wayne and Marion, IN areas. He is survived by his mother, Esperance L. Eff of Tucson, AZ; three brother; fours sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews. His father, Robert C. Eff, died in Tucson in 1989. A graveside service, officiated by the Hospital Chaplain, will be Tuesday, December 19 at the Veterans Hospital in Marion. Preferred memorials to Special Olympics.
