WITTWER, Oren I. 'Brick', 87, beloved husband, father and grandparent, succumbed to congestive heart failure on Monday, August 28, 1995 at his home in Tucson. At his beside were his wife of 64 years, Gladys; daughter, Jane (Jerry B.) Murphy; and grandson, Phil Murphy. Born and raised in Nebraska, Mr. Wittwer was a graduate of Nebraska Weslyn University and a member of Phi Kappa Tau. He began teaching school upon graduation at age 19, also coaching and later becoming Superintendent of Schools. From 1939-1942 Mr. Wittwer was the State Director of the National Youth Administration in Bellevue, NE. During WWII he was Director of Training and Education at the Glen L. Martin Plant where B-29 Bombers were built. Following the war he was Assistant Director of the War Assets Administration in Omaha. After moving to Tucson in 1947 for his daughter's health he was in the securities, financial advising and insurance business. Upon his retirement he became a member of the Kino Community Hospital Auxiliary where he accumulated over 10, 000 hours of volunteer service much of it in the gift shop which his wife managed for over 17 years. He was a member of the Auxiliary Board of Directors and Treasurer of the organization for many years. He also served as an usher at Catalina United Methodist Church for 25 years. He has been a life member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #385 for over 40 years. In addition to his immediate family Mr. Wittwer is survived by his sister, Bonnie Wittwer and his brother, Henry (Garvene) Wittwer of Medford, OR; four nieces and nephews; several cousins and great nieces and nephews. All family members wish to thank the gentle, loving care-givers from Community Hospice and Southern Arizona Home Health Care. Their support and kindness along with the staff of TMC's 800 wing will always be appreciate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be forwarded to Brassroots Inc., 9430 E. BILLING, Eva, of Tucson, passed away August 26, 1995. She was born September 30, 1903, to Christan and Frederica Billing in Rural Lisbon, ND. She attended school there and came to Tucson in 1952 for health reasons. Preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, and six sisters. Surviving are nieces and nephews. CRATER, Patricia, 50, died August 27, 1995. Survived by her husband Donald Crater; son, Daniel Crater; daughters Carolyn Crater and Sherri Crater all of Vail; mother, Frecia Hughes of Tucson; granddaughters, Shauna Zepeda, Shelbie Crater both of Tucson; daughter-in-law Linda Crater. Mrs. Crater was a school bus driver for Vail School District #20 for 15 years. She was recently recognized for 15 years of dedicated service. GILKERSON, Steven, Frederick 31, died August 25, 1995. Mr. Gilkerson is survived by his wife, Lauren A. (Thompson) of Tucson, AZ; mother, Evelyn M. MERZ, Nora A., age 78, of Lapeer, MI, formerly of Waterford and Tucson, AZ, died Monday, August 28, 1995. She was born February 6, 1917 in Birmingham, MI, daughter of Charles and Lorena (Symons) Jones. She married William Merz on July 20, 1940, he preceded her death in August 1993. Nora had lived most of her life in Waterford, MI. She belonged to the Women's Auxiliary and the American Legion in Arizona. Surviving are her children, Carol A. Merz of Tucson, AZ, William C. Merz of Lapeer, MI, David A. Merz of White Lake, Frederick B and wife Kathy Merz of Waterford and Brian K. and wife Annette Merz of Lapeer, MI; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia and husband Bill Stieler of Sun City Center, FL and Doris and husband Robert Dean of Arvada, CO. Besides her husband, William, two brothers, Kenneth and Harold preceded her death. Friends may visit the funeral home Wednesday, August 30, from 3:00 till 5:00 p.m. and again from 7:00 till 9:00 p.m. with funeral services Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Baird-Newton Funeral Home, in Lapeer, MI.
RAINS, Encil E. USN COMDR, RET. 75, was killed in a car accident in Inverness, Scotland on August 25, 1995. Encil served 22 years in the U. S. Navy, retiring as Commander in 1963. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea where he served on destroyers and was awarded several medals including the purple heart. He served a tour of duty at the Pentagon, was the director of the Brookfield (IL) ZOO: Executive Director of the ASPCA and director of San Diego County Animal Control. In Tucson, Encil was a substitute teacher and enjoyed his hobbies, crafts, tinkering and travel. He was a multi-talented man and touched so many lives. He is survived by his wife, Lee; children, Phillip (Lynn) Rains, Leslie (Greg) Pizzino, Jennifer (Ron) Grant; grandchildren, Tia, Erin, Nicky, Rory, Emily and Jonah; sister, Alberta (Lee) House; many loving nieces and nephews; and his former wife Genevieve Rains. Encil and Lee would have celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in September. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. BOJE, Susan Ann, 45, of Tucson, died August 27, 1995. Army, serving in Germany and Fort Ord, CA. CELAYA, Jose Luis 'Surdo', age 54, entered into eternal rest on August 26, 1995. Survived by wife of 27 years, Diana Miranda; sons, Jose Luis Jr., Mario-Santiago; and daughter, Lorena-Yvonne; one grandson, Miguel-Santino Vasquez. Born to Esther Ortiz and Luis Celaya on October 21, 1940. He is also survived by brothers, Tony (Eliza) of Oquitoa, Sonora, Mexico and Angel-Daniel (Edelmira) of Tucson; three sisters, Socorro (Everardo) Lopez of San Luis, AZ, Celia (Federico) Graciano and Carmen Celaya, both of Yuma; many beloved nephews and nieces and loving mother-in-law, Mercy Miranda. 'Surdo' came to Tucson in 1968. He was employed by Hector's and Ron's Concrete Construction for 25 years until he retired in December of 1994. He was a member of the Cursillos in Christianity from St. Margaret's Church. He will be missed by all his friends and relatives; by all who knew and loved him. GARDNER, David H., 69, of Tucson, passed away August 27, 1995. Survived by wife, Concepcion 'Concha-Tia Chita' Gradillas Gardner; son, Joe M. (Debbie) Gardner; daughter, Viola D. Torrent; six grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces who greatly loved him. Son of Nellie Pritchard; brother of Grace Gardner Ruiz, Edward Henderson, Eddie (Josie) Alcaraz, Connie (Angel) Carranza, Jose 'Gaga' (Olga) Alcaraz, Raymond (Lily) Gardner, Ed (Wilma) Gardner and Joyce Gardner Villanueva. David Gardner was a veteran of WWII and received a Purple Heart. He was also a descendant of the Gardner Pioneer family of Santa Cruz County and Gardner Canyon. MARTINEZ-UGO, Eva G., longtime Tucson resident left this life to be with her Lord Jesus (John 14) on Saturday, August 26, 1995. Eva was born in Jimenez, Chihuahua, Mexico, February 1, 1910 and moved to El Paso as a young girl, then later to Tucson. She was a member of the 1st Southern Baptist Church and before retirement had spent 11 years as Secretary to the City Attorney of Tucson. Her greatest pleasure was her children and grandchildren to whom she was known as 'Mamita'. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Pete R. Martinez and John Ugo; her brother, Jesse and sisters, Florinda and Delia. She leaves behind her sisters, Laura Swain, Selsa Reyes and Alma Schaffer; brothers, Alberto and Leonardo Gavaldon. Surviving children are Al Martinez of Silver City, NM, Yvonne Martinez and Bernice Vidal, both of Tucson and Irene Burdick of Dallas, TX; stepson, Peter Brady of Phoenix; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. 'Mamita', you showed us love and Jesus and Made our lives richer. We will meet again because of Him.'
