GAWTHORPE, Genelle W., died October 21, 1995. Wife of Darrel L. Gawthorpe. Mother of Rand and David Gawthorpe. Step-mother of Robert Gawthorpe, grandmother of Erik and Kimberly, step-grandmother of Rachel and Darrel. Sister of Exie Harris, Loreen (Earl) Berkshire, Bonnie Cotner, and LaRue Bozarth. Genelle was an accomplished aviatrix. Memorial Service 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 25, 1995 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway with Rev. David Houchin officiating.

GREENBLAT, Bette Ruth, 65, passed unto the Lord while sleeping at home in San Diego, CA on October 8, 1995. Formerly Bette Ruth Gray of Tucson, this kind and lively spirit is survived in San Diego by Dan and Patti Greenblat (son and daughter-in-law); granddaughter, Stacy; grandson, Steven; Bette's sister, Margie Strong; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebratory wake at her home took place October 14th. Her husband, Manuel Greenblat, also of Tucson, pre-deceased her on November 26, 1948. She is survived by her sister, Mary Neilson (Cornville, AZ) and many loving members of the Munguia family. In Memoira donations to the 'Friends of the San Diego Public Library' (820 E. St., San Diego, CA 92101) are most encouraged.

GROSS, George Allan, 51, of Tucson, died October 22, 1995. Survived by wife, Sue Gross of Tucson; stepsons, Darin Viar and Chad Viar, both of WA; step-grandchildren, Christopher Viar and Kevin O'Neil, both of Tucson, Heather Viar and Joshua Viar, both of WA; numerous brothers and sisters of NY; many nieces and nephews. Mr. Gross was a service representative for Kachina Business machines. Memorial services to be announced. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY and CEMETERY.

HINZE, Ella, 82, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 1995. She is survived by her husband, Edward Hinze. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Streams in the Desert Lutheran Church Building Fund. Memorial Service will be held Thursday, October 26 at 10:00 a.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.

JOHNSON, Joy E. Courtright, 79, born February 15, 1916 in Newark, IL, died October 21, 1995 in Tucson, AZ. Owned and operated Johnson Egg Ranch. Preceded in death by brothers, Robert Courtright and Ned Courtright and sister, Janice Hollenback and grandson, Todd Woolridge. Survived by sisters, Donna Norem; son, Garron Eagle; daughters, Gracelynn Roberts and Vicki Johnson; granddaughter, Tammyjo Murphy; grandsons, Shawn Woolridge, Chad Woolridge, Travis Durman, Larry Eagle, Gary Eagle; and 10 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, family has requested donations in her memory to Rainbow Acres, P.O. Box 1326, Camp Verde, AZ 86322.

LEON, Mercy Ruiz, age 56, a lifetime resident of Tucson, passed away October 21, 1995. Born August 14, 1939 in Tucson. Survived by her husband, Ramon; son, Mariano R. (Margaret) Pacho; daughter, Juanita (Alex) Ortega; son, Armando M. Pacho; daughter, Sonia Leon; five grandchildren, Alex, Vinny, Brian, Anthony, and Michael; sister, Carmen Mange. A Memorial Service will be held 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 25, 1995 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave., Pastor Lupe Rodriguez officiating.

LINKE, Charles A., 94, of Chandler, AZ, died, October 21, 1995. Survived by son-in-law, Melvin Kessler of Tempe; two grandchildren. He was a life member of the Elks BPOE #385 and was a former resident of Tucson. Graveside Service, Green Acres Cemetery, 401 N. Hayden Rd, Scottsdale, AZ, 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 23, 1995 with Rabbi David Pimkwasser officiating. Interment at Green Acres Cemetery. LINVILLE, Doris J., 78, passed away October 21, 1995. She is survived by five sons and two daughters. Private memorial held.

MADER, Cecil A., 70, died October 22, 1995. Survived by his wife, Barbara Mader of Tucson; children, Mark (Nanette) Mader of WA, Joseph (Linda) Mader of WA, Mary (Edward) Walinski of Tucson, Michael (Gail) Mader of Tucson, William Mader of Tucson, Daniel (Jill) Mader of Atlanta, GA and Kathryn (Paul) Lithgow of Tucson; 13 grandchildren also survive; sister, Kathleen Peterburs and Patricia Schmitt, both of WI. Mr. Mader was a member of the Elks, D.A.V. and V.F.W. of Tucson and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. Funeral Mass 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 25 at St. Francis de Sales Church, 1375 S. Camino Seco with Interment to follow at Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 25 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway.

McCLUSKY, Margeret Leon, 74, died Saturday, October 21, 1995. Preceded in death by husband, Sterling who died October 11, 1995. Survived by sons, Gary A. (Eileen) McClusky of CA., and James L. (Marian) McClusky of MO; grandchildren, Misty Buckley, Kimber Polus, Heather Gereke, John Dewhurst, Kay McCluskey and Joshua McClusky; and nine great grandchildren; brother, James 'Bud' Howell. Graveside Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 25 at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Arrangements by EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY.

NEWLIN, Philip B., 72, Tucson, died October 20, 1995. Born in Sullivan County, IN, April 26, 1923, the third son of Henry Newlin and Eva (Rupp) Newlin of Hutsonville, IL. Mr. Newlin was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Newlin of IL. Mr. Newlin is survived by two children from his first marriage, David M. Newlin, El Paso, TX and Elaine Newlin, Tucson; six grandchildren, Jenny, Laura, Amanda, Julia, Amy and David W. Newlin of El Paso. He is also survived by a brother, Max Newlin of Phoenix and his wife of nearly 30 years, Audrey S. Newlin, Tucson. Mr. Newlin is also survived by two granddaughters, Adriana Newlin and Veronica Newlin, El Paso, TX, the daughters of Sara Newlin, David Newlin's 2nd wife. Phil earned a BS in Civil Engineering, UA, 1946, and a MS in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri, Rolla in 1950. Phil started his teaching career in Civil Engineering and Surveying at the UA in 1946, being registered as a Surveyor (#1472) and Professional Engineer (#1918) in the 1950's. He organized and conducted the Arizona Land Surveyor's Conference for 25 years. An early advocate of the state plane coordinate system, Phil educated and promoted its use in surveying land. Also an advocate of photogrammetry, he purchased a plotter for the UA in 1960, and promoted its use. Today, most mapping is done in this manner. Phil was involved in the S.S.C. (Superconducting Super Collider) site location and reduced circles on maps to actual locations on the ground for the State's bid for that facility. Always an advocate of students, he spent many hours with three generations of Civil Engineers and Surveyors, teaching, encouraging and working with them, toward a better profession and community. He was named Engineer of the Year by the Southern Chapter of A.S.P.E. in the 1990's. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Theta Tau, Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers and a supporter of the UA Student Chapter ASCE., Member American Society of Professional Engineers and Member and past Board Member of the American Congress of Surveying Mapping and Photogrammerty. Donations may be made in the name of Philip B. Newlin to the Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund at the University of Arizona. Dr. George Tolman will conduct graveside services at East Lawn Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Road, Tucson, AZ Thursday, October 26, 1995, 11:00 a.m. Funeral arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.

OLMSTED, Francis Culbert 'Frank', 79, of Tucson, passed away October 21, 1995. Survived by daughters, Julie Rogers and Tina Hardy, both of Charlotte, NC; sons, Frank Olmsted Jr. of Lake City, FL and Wayne Olmsted of Dallas, TX; sisters, Emilie Welch of Tucson, AZ and Sherman Beresford of U.S. Virgin Islands. Also survived by seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Olmsted was a self employed business man who lived in and loved Tucson for over 20 years. Born in New Jersey but educated in France as a youth. He traveled extensively. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 30 years and through that organization helped many throughout the world. A memorial in his honor will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 1995 at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, family suggest donations can be made to the Desert Kiwanis Club Foundation, P.O. Box 35322, Tucson, AZ 85740.

SMITH, Irene, 69 years old, Friday, October 20, 1995 in Tucson. Survived by two daughters, Jodie David of Tucson, Janie Brennan of Tempe, AZ; six sons, John Noack of Williams, AZ, David Noack of Scottsdale, AZ, James Noack and Dale Noack, both of Tucson, Dennis Noack of Seward, AK, Duane Noack of Tucson; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was a native of Tucson. Friends of Mrs. Smith may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, 1995 at WOLFREY PEACE CHAPEL, 5225 E. Speedway, 881-0338.

SULLIVAN, Eleanor, 72, passed away on October 18, 1995. Survived by her husband of 51 years, Louis Sullivan; children, James, Cathleen, Lou-Ellen, Theresa, and Patrick; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Regina Durbin of New Jersey. Eleanor was a devoted foster-parent for many years. She will be be sorely missed by all her friends. Family services were held in her home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests remembrances be made to the Southern Arizona Lung Association.

TREVINO, Josephine Sotelo, 82 years old, died Friday, October 20, 1995. She lived in Arizona for 75 years. Survivors include son, George; daughter, Lee Parent; sister, Alice S. Compuzano; brother, Louis M. Sotelo, all of Tucson; daughter, Eleanor (Charles) Babbit of Phoenix; brothers, Manuel M. (Ernestine) Sotelo; Edward M. Sotelo of Los Angeles; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 1995 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave., with Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass to be held on Wednesday, October 25, 1995 at St. John's (12th and Ajo) at 10:00 a.m. with burial at South Lawn Cemetery.

VALDEZ, James, 88 years old, died Sunday, October 22, 1995 in Tucson. Survived by his wife, Christina Valdez of Tucson; daughter, Virginia Leon of Tucson; three sisters; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren. Graveside Mass for Mr. Valdez will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 25, 1995 at Holy Hope Cemetery, 3555 N. Oracle, Tucson. WARNE, Gertrude S. 'Julie', 87, of Benson, passed away in Benson, Saturday, October 21, 1995. There are no survivors. Memorial Service, Thursday, October 26, 1995 at 7:00 p.m. at Community Presbyterian Church of Benson.
