MALLMANN, Violet, 89, of National Parks Highway, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Thursday, May 25 1995 at Guadalupe Medical Center, Carlsbad, NM. Survived by two sisters, Ardith Nyrkkanen of Carlsbad, NM and Ruth Gersch of Wildwood, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Violet was born July 19, 1905 in Chicago, IL to Tom and Bertha Farber Downey. She grew up in Chicago, leaving in 1943. She lived in Tucson, Arizona for a few years before moving to Lake Mead, AZ and then to Carlsbad, NM in 1974. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1974, two months after moving to Carlsbad. Graveside Services will be Tuesday, May 30, 1995 at 10:00 a.m. at East Lawn Palms Memorial Park, Tucson, Arizona. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home, Carlsbad, New Mexico is handling the arrangements.

SCHOTTLAND, Edna Lilyan, 86, a Tucson resident since 1979, died May 24, 1995. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 28, 1995 at the ADAIR Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at 3:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Arlington Cemetery, Washington D.C., next to her beloved daughter, Mary Elizabeth. Born in Los Angeles, CA., she is survived by her husband of 63 years, Charles; son, Richard; and two grandsons, Mark and Greg; and countless friends, all of whom will miss her dearly. Moving to Tucson from Boston after Mr. Schottland's retirement as President of Brandeis University, Edna continued to actively support her husband's involvement in the seniors' social and economic issues by being one of Tucson's most elegant hostess. While living in the Washington D.C. area during World War II and before Mr. Schottland was the Social Security Administrator under President Eisenhower, she was private secretary to the Chairman of the Maritime Labor Board. Later, she became an administrative assistant of the War Production Board. While living in CA., prior to the Schottland's stay in Washington, D.C., she was active in the Beverly Hills League of Women Voters and was on the Board of Directors for the Hollywood Assistance League. While in Boston, she was on the Board of Directors of the Boston Catholic Family Counseling Service and President of the Women's Auxiliary for nearly 20 years, active in the Brandeis Faculty Wives Association and represented her husband in many other University activities. She was also active as a volunteer in social welfare and educational programs. In lieu of flowers, donations will be appreciated in Mrs. Edna Schottland's name to a favorite charity or to the Pima Council on Aging. Local arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel.

DICK, Gamble Crockett, Jr., longtime Tucsonan, died on May 24, 1995 after a long and difficult struggle, bravely fought. Born in Lexington, KY on January 28, 1916, Gamble grew up in Versailles, KY, graduated from Versailles High School and attended the University of Kentucky. He moved to Tucson in 1936 where he found many wonderful friends and married Betsey Lay in 1942. He was employed by the state of Arizona as a state land appraiser. Gamble enjoyed fishing, children, sports, his friends and most of all his family. He was an honorable man of great courage, a beloved grandfather, father, husband, and brother who will be missed very much. Gamble Dick, Jr. leaves as his legacy, three sons, Gamble C. Dick, III (Linda), Barclay Ladd Dick (Susan), and Christopher Jeffers Dick of whom he is very proud; and five grandsons, Matt, Brian, Aaron, Adam and Logan who learned from and loved him. He is also survived by his brother, Douglas M. Dick of Los Angeles, CA who holds his brother very close to his heart. A gathering of family and friends will be announced at a later date. The family request that friends remember Gamble by offering a helping hand to children in need whenever possible.
