PHILLIPS, James H. T/Sgt. USAF Ret., 71, died June 22, 1995. Survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Margaret; children, Deborah (Dave) Aiken of AR, Lee Edward of NV, Bruce (Sharon) of Tucson and James (Valerie) of Tucson; brothers, Tom (Jackie) Phillips of Phoenix, Forrest (Betty Jo) Phillips of TX; 11 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his daughter, Marris Sue. Mr. Phillips received the Purple Heart and was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church. REED, Kenneth R. (Kelly). A memorial service for Kenneth R. (Kelly) Reed, 51, a former assistant attorney general for the State of Arizona, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church, 3809 E. 3rd, Tucson, with the Rev. Robert Herhold officiating. Reed, a former Tucsonan, died June 21, 1995 in a San Francisco Hospital following a lengthy illness. Reed, who was recognized by his peers as one of the top antitrust lawyers in the United States, had been in private practice in Scottsdale for the past several years. A native of Detroit, MI., he was a former Marine Corps captain and served in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot, receiving 23 Air Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal and the Purple Heart. Reed, a 1961 graduate of Rincon High School, attended Princeton University and received his B.A. degree in government from the University of Arizona in 1967 with high distinction. Following his 1971 graduation from the U of A Law School where he was the top-ranked senior and managing editor of Arizona Law Review, he served for a year as clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. In the mid-1970's, Reed was recruited from private law practice by then Attorney General Bruce Babbit to investigate alleged widespread price-fixing and antitrust violations throughout the state. Reed is survived by two sons, Jeffery and Jason of Tucson; three brothers, John Alexander of New York City, Ron Alexander of Harrisburg, PA., and Scott Alexander of Santa Rosa, CA; his mother, Patricia Alexander and stepfather, Dick Alexander, both of El Granada, CA; a grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Payn of Newhall, CA; and a number of nieces and nephews. His ashes will be scatted at sea off the Golden Gate, San Francisco.
REYES, Federico C., 41, of Tucson, passed away June 23, 1995. Survived by wife, Corrine Reyes; daughter, Esperanza Reyes; sons, Alex, Federico, Anthony, Albert and Pablo Reyes; sister, Patsy Gutierrez. Also survived by nieces and nephews. SMITH, Cecil L., 63, recently relocated from Hampton, Virginia, died Thursday, June 22, 1995 after a long illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Frances; and his three daughters, Theresa Kilgore of Tucson, AZ, Cecilia Taplin of Norfolk, Virginia, JoAnn Marsico of Panama City, Florida; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters in Iowa. He will be greatly missed.
SOLOMON, Lorraine C., 92, died June 14, 1995. She is survived by her son, Daniel R. Wells of Annapolis, MD; her sister, Jean Ahern; and her brother, Victor A. Christopherson, both of Tucson. There are also four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Lorraine, a longtime resident of Salt Lake City, Utah moved to Marin County, CA to live with her sisters, Mildred Christopherson and Jean Ahern after the death of her husband, Sam Solomon. They moved to Tucson in 1990 to be near their brother. A Memorial Service was held at the Casas Adobes Church on June 16, 1995. Lorraine worked in the banking industry for a time and later became a buyer for a department store in Salt Lake City, UT. She had many friends and was widely known as having a green thumb from her interest and success in gardening. Lorraine will be buried with her husband Sam at the City Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
STEEHLER, Nelda Cameron, died June 26, 1995. Survived by her husband, Theodore J. 'Ted' Steehler; son, Scott (Sharon) Steehler of Tucson; daughter, Elizabeth (Frank) Schnepp of Scottsdale, five grandchildren, Cameron and Timothy Steehler, Sara, Kate and Amy Schnepp; also two sisters, Helen (John) Wilson of Lockport, NY and Mary Jean (Paul) Weld of Honeoye Falls, NY. Nelda wished her body be given to the University Medical Center Anatomical Gift Program. A celebration of life will be held at the family home for family members and close friends on Thursday, June 29 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 7957 E. Colette Circle, #188. STEINBECK, John Witherup Steinbeck II, 64, died peacefully in his sleep after a long illness, on June 24, 1995. Survived by his wife, Jeanette; children, John Frederick, Katherine Anne, Jeffrey A., John Witherup III and Sarah Jane Bunker Steinbeck; sister, Jane S. Campaigne; grandchildren, August Nathaniel and Katherine Elizabeth Steinbeck; cousin, Herbert F. Steinbeck. Mr. Steinbeck was the founder and director of Villa-Oasis Boarding School in Toltec, AZ for 30 years. He received his BA Magna Cum Laude at Westminster College, Fulton, MO, his MA from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, completed his Ph.D at La Jolla International University, San Diego, CA. Mr. Steinbeck was an educator, historian and sailor and he was listed in Marquis Who's Who, Who's Who International in Education and Who's Who among students. TERAN, Emma Martinez, 95, of Tucson, died June 25, 1995. Survived by beloved daughter, Martha E. LATHAM, Evalyn Y., 83 years old, died Saturday, June 24. She was an area resident for 38 years. Mrs. Latham is survived by sons, Allen Latham of Tucson, Keith (Lindy Stewart) Latham of Australia; daughters, Alice Reeves of Mesa, Marlene G. (Ralph) Moldenhauer of TX; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. She was a member of The Eastern Star, Amarantha, and Daughter of the Nile. LINDLEY, Ries R. Sr., 79, died June 25, 1995. 'Doc' was born December 24, 1915 in Abilene, TX., the son of Chester Major Lindley and Mary Matilda Bowles. He received a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Texas A and M University in 1944 and worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 32 years, spending six years in Mexico with the hoof and mouth eradication program from 1947 to 1953 and 25 years as the port veterinarian in Douglas, AZ. A Tucson resident for three years, Doc is survived by his wife of 58 years, Muriel; sons, Walter (Mary) and Ries, Jr. (Marcia) of Tucson and Richard (Grace Broussard) of Dripping Springs, TX; a brother, Clay Lindley of Annapolis, MD; a sister, Marcia Bean of Elmendorf, TX; seven grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at DESERT ROSE CREMATION and BURIAL, 2750 S. 4th Avenue. He will be interred in Potosi, TX at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association.
LITTLE, Harold D., 87, of Tucson, died June 26, 1995. Mr. Little is a member of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union #741. ROHER, Susan Mary Elizabeth, 42, died of injuries suffered in a tragic auto accident in Tucson on June 21, 1995. Susan was born on May 30, 1953 in Dublin, Ireland. Her early childhood was spent in the West Indies with her family. Susan returned to Ireland in 1962. She graduated from Our Lady's School in 1970. After graduation from Commercial College, Susan lived and worked in Switzerland, Germany, Yugoslavia and London, where she gained her fluency in languages. Returning to Dublin in 1979 she met her 'Beloved' David Roher. They were united in marriage in California in May 1981 and moved to Tucson in 1983. Susan was a past president of the National Association of Women in Construction and a member of the Oro Valley Chamber of Commerce. Susan was a member of the St. Thomas The Apostle Church where she served as Lector and Eucharist Minister. Susan was corporate treasurer and secretary of Roher Construction and Guardian Access Company and served all phases of management. Susan is survived by her 'Beloved' husband, David Roher; her parents, Aiden and Betty Kernan; sister, Lorna (Grattan) Hood; brother, Peter (Eilis) Kernan; four nephews, Thomas and Michael Hood, and David and Danile Kernan, all of Dublin, Ireland; and numerous aunts and uncles in Ireland and Canada. Susan was preceded in death by her dear sister, Julie in 1980. Susan is survived by her American family which includes her step-son, Ryan Roher of Medford, OR; step-daughters, Candace Dumas and Kellee (Michael) Szczepaniak; father-in-law, Charles Roher; sister-in-laws, Janet (Michael) Barr, Sally Lee, all of Tucson, and Patricia (Stanley) McElrath of Tempe. The memories of Susan for her family and friends in Ireland, as of those in the United States are of a caring and loving person, who brought joy to all who knew and loved her. Susan graced us all with her unbounded love, the precious memories of her will linger long, though she is gone from us physically, the essence of her will never be lost. We are saddened by her tragic, and untimely death, but we have peace in knowing that she will forever rest in the sweet arms of Jesus, her Savior. COCO, Anthony J., 86, passed away June 23, 1995. Beloved husband of Madelyn for 60 years; father of Anthony 'Billie' of CA, and Leonard (Cindy) of Tucson; brother of Mary Tribotte of FL, Lee Caternolo of NY, Josephine Deni of FL, Angie Coco, Rose Ann Coco and Eleanor Giannone, all of NY, Joe Cook of NJ, Sam Coco of FL, Samuel Coco of NY, Steven Coco of NY, and August Coco of OR; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Coco was preceded in death by brothers, Frank, Louis, John, Bill, and daughter, Joann Crichton. Mr. Coco was a member of the American Legion Post #7, Knights of Columbus, Federation F.O.E. She was a board member for T.I.M.E. in 1971, 1975 and 1976. She received the Image de Tucson Hispanic Community Award in 1978, also a member of the Cactus Cuties bowling league and Credit Women's Breakfast Club. GIBSON, James Edgar, 43, entered into rest June 22, 1995. Survived by parents, Johnny and Pearle Gibson; sisters, Sharon Schmieding (Don Grant), Marsha Gibson; brother, Steve (Lucia) Gibson; six nieces and nephews, all of who loved him dearly. Also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Jim was a native Tucsonan and 1969 Tucson High School Graduate. He traveled the world with the U.S. Navy and as a merchant seaman. GOLDSTEIN, Richard S., 64, born May 20, 1931. Passed away June 24, 1995. Dick was a permanent resident of Tucson for 26 years. He received his graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Arizona. He is survived by his adoring family, his wife of 35 years, Doris; his children, Seth, Cara, and Nicole; granddaughter, Molly; mother, Helen Goldstein. Dick was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force retiring as a Major in 1973. He then worked for the City of Tucson and until his death was employed by Hughes Aircraft Company, Tucson. He served as President, Treasurer and Program Chair of the Hughes Tucson Management Club. His loving nature, caring ways and natural integrity will stand as testament to his life. He will be loved, remembered and respected by his family, friends and colleagues in his death as he was in his life. Services Monday, June 26, 1995, 10:00 a.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY, with Cantor Maurice Falkow officiating. Interment Congregation Anshei Israel Section of EVERGREEN CEMETERY.
