Vincente Garcia Cervantez
Vincente Garcia Cervantez, 88, of San Jose was surrounded by his family when he passed away Feb. 21 in Phoenix.
Mr. Cervantez was born Jan. 21, 1921, in San Jose to Antonio and Marcelena Cervantez. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Isabel Urrea, and they made their home in Clifton.
Mr. Cervantez worked for Phelps Dodge and retired in 1982. He enjoyed horses, hunting and farming chili, corn and sugar cane. He loved his family and took an interest in his grandchildren. He cared and liked to know what was going on in their lives.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Isabel; children, Vincent Jr. of San Jose, David (Toni) of Glendale, Jerry (Susan) of Mesa, Harold of San Jose and Annette (Chuck) Romero of Safford. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Lena Romero of Clifton; and brother, Paul of California. Mr. Cervantez will be missed by his many extended family members.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, March 2, at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church with viewing Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. and a rosary service at 7 p.m. Interment will be at the Safford Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
Billie Bingham
Billie Bingham, 79, of Safford passed away Feb. 23, 2009. She was born to Levi A. John and Eliza Merrill John on Aug. 5, 1929, in Safford.
Billie attended Safford schools, where she was very active in sports. She married George C. Bingham on May 19, 1947. Together, they enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. They also loved socializing with friends and family.
Billie was preceded in death by her daughter, Cindy Bingham; her parents; sister, Marvel Faulkner of Fairlene Golding; and brothers, Hugh John, Harold John and Paul John.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, George Bingham; and children Sheri (Chris) Ellsworth, DeAnn (Rick) Frazier and Steven (Mary) Bingham; 11 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Graveside services were Saturday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. in the Safford Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
Eric Daniel Perez
Eric Daniel Perez, 17, of Safford passed away Feb. 9, 2009. He was born Sept. 21, 1991, in Phoenix.
Eric lived in Safford throughout his childhood and was attending Mount Graham High School. Throughout these years, he made many friends and was loved deeply by them.
He enjoyed fishing, spending time with family and friends and, most of all, being a father to daughter Gezeia Jurado, 8 months. He loved his daughter with all his heart and was proud to parade her to family and friends.
He worked full-time at Lafe Nelson School and part-time at Casa Manana.
Eric is survived by his daughter, Gezeia Jurado; parents Anthony Perez of Safford and Carolyn Estrada of Phoenix; brothers Anthony Perez Jr. of Safford and Marcus Perez of Phoenix; sisters Valerie Perez, Lorena Bejarano and Yvonne Perez of Safford, and Salina Perez of Phoenix; grandparents Aurelio and Lydia Perez of Safford, Virginia Wiley and Don Estrada of Roosevelt; as well as additional family and friends from Safford and Phoenix.
Eric touched so many lives with his unique ways; his beautiful smile and gentle spirit are what will forever remain in the hearts of friends and family who love him. Eric’s life would seem too short for many, but some flames burn so brightly that destiny determines that their job is done in just a few short years. His life has impacted many in a wonderful way, and he will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral arrangements will be in Phoenix, with a memorial Mass to follow in Safford in the near future.
Melva Fawn Bryce
Melva Fawn Bryce, 78, of Bryce passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009. Fawn was born Aug. 14, 1930, to James M. and Winnie Bigler Smith. She married Ross Bryce on Feb. 12, 1952, in the Mesa Arizona Temple. They were blessed with five children: Michael, Mark, Jim, Elizabeth and Boyd.
Fawn received her B.A. degree in education and taught in the local schools. She enjoyed quilting, visiting the sick and homebound, politics and spending time with her family.
Fawn was past president of the Arizona Democratic Women Organization and was inducted into the Democratic National Hall of Fame for her work in the party. Fawn was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various callings.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by brothers Omer, Keith, Eldon, Kent and Max Smith. Fawn is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ross Bryce; children Michael (Kathleen) Bryce, Mark (Cindy) Bryce, Jim (Gayle) Bryce, Elizabeth (Dayle) Harris and Boyd (Rachel) Bryce; 25 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Dale, Lot and Roger Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 28, at 10 a.m. in the Pima LDS Stake Center. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Stake Center and one hour prior to services. Fawn will be laid to rest in the Bryce Cemetery.
Memorial donations can be made to Mount Graham Hospice and The Gila Valley Temple Building Fund.

Katherine R. Carbajal
Katherine R. Carbajal, 48, passed away unexpectedly Feb. 14, 2009. Kathy was born Nov. 18, 1960, to Bernice and Domenick Giacoletti.
"Miss Kathy," as she was known to her students, worked as a preschool teacher for 14 years in the Morenci School District. Her preschool rooms appealed to all of her students. They were warm and inviting and helped prepare her students for entry into kindergarten. She was a definite asset to the School District, and she loved working with little children.
In addition to her teaching job, Kathy joined the Blake Foundation in 2000, working as the Arizona early intervention developmental specialist. In this capacity she provided in-home support to children, from birth to 3 years old, and their families who had special needs. She was an advocate for young children in Greenlee County. She enjoyed both positions, and her work ethics reflected her care and beliefs with what she was doing.
Kathy was also a devoted wife, mother and daughter. Her family felt her loving care in all she did.
Kathy is survived by her husband, David; daughters Amanda, Marcella and Samantha Carbajal; granddaughter Nicolle Haralson; her parents, Domenick and Bernice Giacoletti; brothers Domenick (Terry), Dennis (Julie) and Michael Giacoletti. Kathy is preceded in death by her granddaughter, Ashlee Haralson.
"Miss Kathy" will be missed by all.
Funeral services for Katherine Carbajal were conducted Saturday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. in the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Morenci. A viewing and rosary were held Friday, Feb. 20, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church from 6-8 p.m. Interment is in the Safford Cemetery.
The family suggests any donations be made to David Carbajal.
Lee Kenyon Udall
Lee Kenyon Udall of Thatcher passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, following a brief illness. Kenyon was born March 5, 1925, in Thatcher, the son of Jesse A. and Lela Lee Udall.
After growing up in Thatcher, he served in the Army during WWII, married Leona Carpenter and received a juris doctorate degree from the University of Arizona. Ken and Leona raised their family in Gilbert, where he farmed, ranched and practiced law.
Returning to the Gila Valley in 1976, the Udalls continued those vocations. They served together as president of the Illinois Peoria Mission from 1992 to 1995 and as president of the Mesa Arizona Temple from 1997 to 2000. Other church service includes serving as scoutmaster and bishop of the Gilbert Ward, president of the Mesa South Stake, regional representative and regional welfare director. Mr. Udall was also active civically, serving as mayor of Gilbert and on various school and water boards.
Kenyon is preceded in death by his wife, Leona; parents; brother Addison Udall; sister Jessica Udall Smith Gil; and one grandson, Trevor Wolfington.
He is survived by one brother, David K. of Paraguay; sisters Lee Flaherty of Gilbert and Mary Louise Palmer of Thatcher; eight children: Jayna (Dave) Lindsay, Brooks (Suzette), Collin (Karen), Nona (Mark) Herrington, Alayne (Don) Favreau, Lela (Bill) Tingey, Marcie (Darrin) Gordon and Jordon (Alison); 41 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. in the Thatcher LDS Stake Center, 1260 N. Reay Lane. Visitation was Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Thatcher Stake Center and one hour prior to funeral services. Arrangements were under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
Floyd “Bake” McEuen
Floyd “Bake” McEuen, 81, passed away Feb. 2, 2009, from complications due to Parkinson’s disease.
A graveside service was held for him at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens in Columbia, S.C., on Feb. 6, 2009.
Floyd loved bacon when he was a little boy, so he was given the nickname of Bacon by his parents, the late Porter and Zona Pollock McEuen.
The name was shortened to Bake, and that is what he was called the rest of his life.
He was born in Eden on March 6, 1927, and was raised in Fort Thomas, where he met his wife-to-be, Frances Lenora Elledge. They had been married 60 years.
Floyd graduated from Brigham Young University in 1948 and then received his Master of Education degree from Cal State in Los Angeles. He taught and coached for 48 years, starting out in Fort Thomas and then in California. Floyd was an avid basketball player and fan. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include his wife, Frances; sons Randall Lee McEuen of Tampa, Fla., and Rick Porter McEuen (Denise) of Lake Forest, Calif.; daughter Robynne Christine Scott of Salt Lake City; grandchildren Rachael and Kathleen McEuen and Parker and Drew Scott; brother Jerry Porter McEuen (Doris) of Safford; and sisters Karen Joy Harris (Monty) of Snowflake and Betty Kay Hatch (Bruce Randall Hatch) of Seattle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Porter and Zona McEuen; sisters Hettie Faye and Sybil McEuen; and brothers J.N. McEuen (Maurine) and Norman “Buddy” McEuen, whose wife, Olive McEuen, lives in Lordsburg, N.M.
Frederick “Fritz” Leroy Brown
Frederick “Fritz” L. Brown, 80, of Thatcher passed, entering into the kingdom of heaven Feb. 12, 2009, surrounded by his family. Frederick was born Jan. 13, 1929, to Walter and Hazel Brown in Fort Wayne, Ind.
He attended school in Indiana and, after graduating from Churubusco High School, he joined the U.S. Navy. After spending four years in the U.S. Navy, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a supervisor and retired in 1984.
Frederick was a member of the Mount Graham Golf Club, the VFW Post 10385 and the NRA. He received the President of Postal Union Award while in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was also an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Hazel Brown; his step-parents, George Manes and Gladys Brown; and his brother, Edward Manes. He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; his children, Frederick (Mabel) L. Brown Jr., Steven (Cathy) A. Brown; his siblings, “Gene” Manes, Lois (Joe) Cyr, Janis (Darryl) Kissinger, David (Linda) Manes, Irene (Wayne) Vehrenkamp, Walter L. (Gina) Brown, Stan (Pat) Pressler, Terri, Lori; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many friends.
A viewing was held Saturday, Feb. 14, at Caldwell Funeral Chapel from 6-8 p.m. A Missouri Synod Lutheran service was held Sunday, Feb. 15, 3 p.m., at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on 301 E. Main St. in Safford, with a viewing one hour prior to services. Interment followed the service at Thatcher Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
Donations in memory of Frederick Brown may be made to the Junior Diabetic Association.
