SLOAN, Harold Robert Jr., Major USA retired, age 75 of Tucson, AZ died Monday, April 10, 1995 at Northwest Hospital in Tucson. He was a resident of Tucson for thirty one years. Mr. Sloan was born January 20, 1920 in Dayton, OH the eldest son of Harold and Gladys (Roberson) Sloan. He attended Cornell University before volunteering to serve his country in the U.S. Army. He was with “The Big Red One’ of the Normandy Invasion June 6, 1944. He was twice decorated with the Purple Heart. He retired from the US Army at Fort Huachuca in 1964. He was a veteran of the Normandy Invasion of World War II and Korea. He was a civil service employee at Fort Huachuca for fifteen years. His hobbies were hunting and gun enthusiast. Mr. Sloan is survived by two sons, Charles R. Sloan of Hurst, TX. Thierry D. Sloan of Tucson, AZ; two daughters, Annie F. McMahon of Westport, MA, Kim Smith of Tucson, AZ; nine grandchildren, Billy, Stephanie, Christopher, Mattheu, Rachel, William, Jennifer, Holly and Melissa; one sister, Frances Wyant of Dayton, OH and one brother, David Sloan of Dayton, OH. Graveside Services will be Friday, April 14, 1995 at 1:00 p.m. at the Post Cemetery, Fort Huachuca with military honors. Chaplain (LTC) John B. Patrick will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be given in memory of Harold R. Sloan Jr. to the American Diabetes Association, Arizona Affiliate Inc., 2328 West Royal Palm Road, Suite D. ST. PIERRE, Arthur David “Dave’, 73, joined his Lord on April 9, 1995. He is survived by Beverly, his wife of 51 years; daughter, Dawn (Gerald) Schultz; grandchildren, Tim (Tricia), Todd, and Travis; daughter, Diane St. Pierre; grandchildren, Joseph Sikon (Christine), Jennifer Hahn; great granddaughter, Kelsey Hahn; daughter, Debra (Jerome) Kovacs; grandchildren, Barbara, Tina, Benjamin, and Beverly; sons, David St. Pierre (Lauren) and Dale St. Pierre. Dave was an active member of many civic, community and veteran organizations throughout his lifetime. He loved the game of golf. No service will be held per Dave’s request. LEGGETT, Charles A., 46, of Tucson, passed away and went to be with his Lord April 12, 1995. A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Marcia; daughter, Michelle; son, Alan; son of, Charles and the late Dorothy Leggett and step-mother, Frances; sisters, Jann Hickey, Cheryl Leggett, both of Evansville, IN, Maria Leggett, Telluride, CO, Paula Leggett, New York, NY. Charles “Chuck’ retired as a Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force. He was presently employed as a Junior ROTC Instructor at Desert View High School. He was an avid tennis player. He coached the Sabino High School girl’s tennis team from 1991-1994. He was also a recreational private pilot. He was an active member of Christ Church United Methodist. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 1995 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church United Methodist, 655 N. Craycroft. LORD, Blaine J., born May 12, 1913 in Cleveland, TN, died April 12, 1995 at his home in Avra Valley. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Verrington Lord. Survived by wife, Eula; children, Thomas (Margaret) of Show Low, AZ, George (Phyllis), Michael, and Linda Bonomi; step-daughters, Kae Avery, and Beverly McClain of Tucson; brother, Calvin (Eleanor) of Tucson, and John (Ola) of AZ; 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Lord first came to Tucson in 1929 at the age of 16. He was a machinist for Southern Pacific Railroad, before establishing Lord Well Drilling Co. He was a pioneer well driller and drilled hundreds of water wells throughout Southern AZ. In 1962 he founded Acorn Water Co. in Avra Valley, now known as Avra Water Co-op. He was a WWII Era Army veteran. He also was a founding member of the John Wayne Masonic Lodge in Marana and was the Grand Master in 1987. He will be fondly remembered by his many relatives and friends. Visitation will be at South Lawn Mortuary, 5401 South Park, Saturday, April 15, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Graveside funeral services will be on Monday, April 17 at 10:00 a.m. at South LawnCemetery.
McDONALD, Raymond D. Dr., 86, of Tucson, died April 13, 1995. Survived by daughters, Diane Kautenburger (Bill) of Tucson and Jan Sticht of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. Born in Tempe, AZ., Dr. McDonald graduated from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. He practiced in Tucson for over half a century and is remembered by hundreds of former patients. He served on the State Dental Board for many years to certify new dentists seeking to practice in AZ. OBERLY, Elsie (Lyerly) Saunders, Pusch, Lance, born March 17, 1902 in Jonesboro, IL. Daughter of, George W. and Mary (Skinner) Lyerly. Passed away April 12, 1995. She was 93 years old. Elsie and first husband, Bill Saunders, left Chicago in early 1923, via Topeka, KS to Tucson, AZ. Elsie was a charter member of the First Baptist Church with Rev. Beal. Her husband, Bill, joined the Masons in the late 20's or early 30's and Elsie joined the EPPS Randolph Lodge, Order of Eastern Star. Mr. Saunders died in the early 50's, on the job at the City of Tucson Paint Shop, on West 18th St., where he had worked many years. She married Fred Pusch, a native Tucsonian. Pusch Ridge in the Catalina mountains was named for the Pusch family. Fred was a guard over the federal prisoners while they built the Mount Lemmon Highway. He was 32nd degree Mason. Later he was a bailiff for Judge Lee Garrett. Fred passed away at the VA Hospital in the middle sixties. Elsie then married Drew Lance, a Tucson restaurant owner, who owned Lance’s Restaurant on East Congress. Later he was head jailer for Frank Eyeman. Drew died in Elsie’s arms after unhitching a boat from their trailer at Pena Blanca Lake. She married Harry Oberly, who preceded her in death. Elsie had pleasant memories of each and every husband. She is survived by brother, Bryan (Doris) Lyerly of Tucson and by six nieces. Elsie was a very generous person. At 93 Elsie has outlived many of her friends. SCHATTILLY, Herman R., 78, of Tucson, passed away April 12, 1995. He is survived by wife, Mary; children, Robert (Azucena) Fisher of Tucson, Danny L. LANG, Viola, a nine year resident of Tucson and a member of the Pennsylvania Club passed away April 8, 1995. Born November 8, 1921 in Darragh, PA. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Alfred L. Lang. LEWIS, Nolan D., age 77, of Tucson, passed away April 7, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Johnie Lewis of Tucson; children, William E. Lewis of Tucson, Venita (Curtis) Flanigan of Tucson, Jesse Sterling of Tucson; god son, Larry Ray of CA, Ernestine Mason of Phoenix, Betty Lewis of Tucson, and Tina Lewis of Phoenix; brother, Dave Lewis of Tucson. Nolan was employed with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department for over twenty years and retired with the rank of Captain. He was employed with the Arizona State Department of Economic Security for several years.
