YI, Leon, Jr., 44, of Tucson, died April 17, 1995. Survivors include: parents, Leon and Carmen Yi, Sr.; sister, Carmen Hollowell, all of Miami, FL; brother, Ramon Yi, Derry, NH; preceded in death by brother, Rafael Yi in 1990. Leon was born in Havana, Cuba, May 22, 1950 and has resided in Tucson since 1977. He attended the University of Chicago from 1968-1974 receiving a B.A., Florida State University, 1975-1976, receiving a M.A. and the U of A from 1977, where he was a candidate for a PhD. Leon was a teaching assistant and research assistant in the Physics Department at the U of A from 1980-1987. He was a research assistant at the Rural Health Office of the U of A Health Sciences Center. Other interests include: classical music. He was an accomplished musician and Astro Physicist. Funeral Services will be at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Blvd. (at Speedway), at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, 1995 with friends and family officiating. Cremation will follow. YOUNG, George C., Jr., 72, died April 15, 1995. Husband of Harriet M. Young of Tucson; father of Curtis G. Young, Vicki (Jeff) Rice, Janet (Keith) Parrish, all of IL and Alan J. AKERS, John B., Jr., 76, a resident of Tucson for 23 years, died Saturday, April 15, 1995. Preceded in death by his son, John B. III; three sisters; and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Nora Sue of Tucson; sisters, Hazel (Homer) Cook of Perryville, MD, Anna Perry of Bluefield, WV; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Akers was a World War II veteran, a volunteer Income Tax Counselor for A.A.R.P., and a volunteer for Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Tucson. He was a Past Master of Marion McDaniel Lodge #56, FandAM, a member of Aaron Lodge #49, FandAM, Desert Star Chapter #54, O.E.S. and a Past Rainbow Dad for Fidelity Chapter #46, I.O.R.G., all in Tucson. Memorial service: 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 17, 1995 at Pima Street Baptist Church, 5056 E. Pima St., with Pastor Randy Dick and Dr. Henry Wooten officiating. Interment will be private. BURRILL, Scott La Forrest, Retired mining executive age 72, died April 13, 1995. He was very active in mining and environmental activities in the area. Scott was the son of Ray and Muriel Burrill of Faukton, SD and was born on March 27, 1923. He was attending the SD School of Mines and Technology when he entered into the U.S. Navy for two years service during World War II. He was very proud of his service to his country. He then returned to receive a BA in Metallurgical Engineering in 1947. Scott married Betty Liebig on June 24, 1947 and were truly devoted to one another. Scott was then employed by Anaconda Copper Mining Co. and worked in Butte, MT for three years. They then moved to McGill, NV in 1950 for Scott to work for Kennecott Copper Co., NV Mines Division. They lived in NV for nine years where their two daughters were born. In 1959, they moved to ASARCO’s Silver Bell Unit and was transferred to the Mission in Sahuarita in 1961. This involved a move to Tucson where he lived the rest of his life. He was promoted to Director of Technology and Environment at ASARCO’s Tucson office for the SW Mining Department where he retired in 1986. During his last job Scott was appointed by AZ’s governor in 1985 to the Water Quality Control Council as the mine’s representative for the state. He was very active in the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering (AIME). During his career he held various offices in this professional association and was awarded the Legion of Honor for 50 years of service as a member in 1994. He was also a member of the American Legion. Scott will remain a part of each person he ever met while bringing a smile or laugh to us when thinking of his wonderful way of sharing a joke or story…and himself. He was truly one who personified integrity, fairness and honesty as a gentle man with a real love of people, life, and the world around him. Remember him with a smile…as it was his only wish. He is survived by his wife, Betty of nearly 48 years and his best friend; his daughters, Barbara Burrill (George D. Murphy), of Tucson and Leanne Goldey (Ron) of Oxford, OH; his brothers, Donald Burrill, of Casper, WY and Larry Burrill, of Plymouth, MN and grandchildren, Caylin and Dylan and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 1995 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 8051 E. Broadway with Rev. Michael Brunk officiating. Interment to follow at Desert Vista Cemetery with full Military Honors by Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Honor Guard. HADDAD, Kelly, Retired Justice of the Peace and entrepreneur, died April 13, 1995 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. Mr. Haddad was born in Superior, AZ in 1927. He was 67 years of age and lived in Kearney, AZ. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. Mr. Haddad was elected to eight terms as Justice of the Peace in the Ray, Sonora and Kearney precinct. He was instrumental in the late 1950's for ensuring that justice prevailed during the civil rights movement of the Mexican American. His involvement in community activities over the past 46 years included: the Pinal County Development Commission, Pinal County Fair Commission, Kearny Chamber of Commerce, Rotary International, B.P.O.E., Lions, American Legion, VFW, Moose and Masons. Mr. Haddad participated in World War II as a sailor and as a soldier in the Korean Conflict. In 1957 he moved to Sonora, AZ and began his meritorious political career which spanned three decades. He is survived by his wife, Navval Haddad; sons, Richard of FL and Kelly Haddad of Chandler; daughters, Jacqueline Haddad Phelps of San Manuel and Elaine Haddad of Kearny; five grandchildren; and his sister, Peggy Saoud of Superior. SIMMONS, Jacquelyn Marie, 46, of Tucson, died Thursday, April 13, 1995. Through 22 exciting years of marriage, she is survived by her husband, Kirk, Tucson Police Department; daughter, Michele, United States Air Force; son, Ken, Mountain View High School; parents, Ron and Florence McLean; brother, Tom and a host of relatives who will remember her lovingly. She touched the lives of so many good people, young and old, who will miss her dearly. She taught Kindergarten at DeGrazia Elementary School in the Marana School District. She was a member of N.E.A., F.O.P. #1 Ladies Auxiliary, University of Arizona Alumni Band. Services will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, located at 8650 N. ADAMS, Benjamin S., 81, died April 12, 1995. Brother of, Joel S. Adams of Tucson. Born in Persia. Worked in the only American High School in Baghdad. He met Mrs. Allen a teacher at the school who had trouble with the language barrier as Baghdad was an Arab country. Ben assisted Mrs. Allen as an interpreter and helped her in her everyday life while she was in that country. She appreciated his assistance so much that when she returned to the United States in 1938 she brought Ben with her. Ben attended Tucson High School. Enlisted in the Military and served during WWII. Was in the National Guard 158th Infantry known as the Bushmasters. First sent to Panama, hospitalized during attack on Pearl Harbor. Upon release from hospital he was sent to Africa, Italy and Europe where he was wounded. At the end of the war in Europe Ben went to Okinawa with the Army of Occupation where he served four years. He was proud to be an American. He volunteered at the VA hospital for 32 years (over 3800 hours). He was a life and charter member of the following organizations; V.F.W., American Legion Post #7, D.A.V. Chapter 18, Scottish Rite 32nd degree, Aaron Lodge #49 FandAM, and Sabbar Shrine Temple. Masonic service 1:00 Monday, April 17 at BRING’S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, with Aaron Masonic Lodge #49 FandAM officiating. Burial in TMP South Lawn.
