Lorenzo Lyman Flake
“Isn’t it a great day!” is the greeting Lorenzo Flake‘s EAC mathematics classes heard for many years.
Since that time, he has been greeted in return that way by a great many of his former students. Lorenzo Lyman Flake, 87, passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday morning, March 20, 2009. He was born Nov. 26, 1921, in Aripine, (Navajo County) to Joel White Flake and Elsie Vilate Owens Flake.
He spent most of his growing up years in the area of Snowflake, graduating from Snowflake High School in 1940. He served as student body president during his senior year. He attended Gila Junior College (now Eastern Arizona College) from 1940 to 1942 and also served as class president during his sophomore year.
Lorenzo enlisted in the Army Air Corps, becoming a pilot and then an instructor pilot for night fighters and gunnery. He spent his last months of World War II service with the Occupation Forces in Japan.
He met Jeanene Hanks in Nampa, Idaho, after the war, and they were married in the LDS Salt Lake Temple on May 26, 1948. He was recalled into the Air Force for the Korean Conflict after the completion of his degree at the University of Utah.
In 1955, the family moved to Thatcher, where Lorenzo began teaching mathematics and related sciences at Eastern Arizona Junior College, now EAC. He retired from this position in 1983 but taught part-time for a few years after that.
During his tenure at EAC, he also served as athletic director, division chair and the first faculty association president. He has served in many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including first counselor with the late Farrel C. Layton in the College Ward Bishopric, college branch president and membership and financial clerks in the Thatcher Third Ward. During their retirement Lorenzo and Jeanene served two missions — California Anaheim and Illinois Peoria.
Lorenzo enjoyed raising livestock. He always had a cow to milk – his way of relaxing after a day in the classroom. He also worked for the U.S. Geological Survey during the summer with his good friend and colleague, Clarence McBride. During retirement he adopted two wild burros. Lorenzo taught them to pull a little “chariot” around the neighborhood. It was interesting that the burros refused to cross the center line in the street.
Lorenzo expressed his love and gratitude to Jeanene many times each day and kept his sense of humor until almost the very last day. “Grandpa-Great” will be missed by all his family and friends.
He is survived by Jeanene, his wife of 60 plus years; his children, Mary Jean Weech (Rodell), Clel (Sherri), Raymond (Margaret), Wayne (Joy) and one foster son, Woodrow Wagner Jr. (Caroline). He is grandfather to 22 and great-grandfather to 36. Lorenzo’s younger sister, Lucelia, is now the lone survivor of his parents’ large family of 13 children.
Services for Lorenzo will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, at the LDS Stake Center on Reay Lane in Thatcher. Visitation was Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Stake Center and will also be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be given to Mt. Graham Home Health & Hospice or the Gila Valley Temple. Arrangements are under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
