KARON, Bruce A., 48, a lecturer at Pima Community College and during the 1980s a developer of local industrial properties, died early Saturday at University Medical Center of illnesses related to AIDS. Til late last year he had privately but successfully battled the disease for more than eight years while energetically continuing multiple business ventures, teaching, traveling and entertaining. He elected to tell only his immediate family of the diagnosis, saying he wanted to live life for himself and for others as fully as possible but didn’t want to solicit anyone’s pity or sympathy. Born July 15, 1946 in Minneapolis, MN, Karon was the third child of Ira and Raleigh Karon. The family moved to Arizona in 1954 and for two years he attended Peter Howell Elementary School before a move to Phoenix. He graduated from Central High School in Phoenix. Karon earned a bachelor’s degree in business and Spanish at the University of Iowa in 1968 followed by a master’s degree in education from the University of Arizona. He taught at the American School of Managua, Nicaragua during the early 1970s. In 1980 he returned to Tucson as a founder of Karon Brothers International, a family investment business. He was involved in international trade, real estate development and finance, and was always fascinated by travel. At Pima he taught classes on travel and tourism. At a stop at Creel in the Chihuahuan Sierra Madre he once was so involved with trying to buy some hand-woven lassos for his brother Paul that his train left without him. Undaunted and bilingual, he flagged down a truck driver, quickly explained the situation, and then at high speed was able to overtake and reboard the train. In recent years he moved downtown to the El Presidio National Historic District and with characteristic attention to detail directed the renovation of the 1870s McCleary House, one of the city’s oldest surviving adobe homes. Karon is survived by his longtime companion, Monty Jones; by sister, Gail Palchikoff of Verdi, CA; by brother, Richard of Friday Harbor, WA and Paul of Tucson; and by seven nieces and nephews. Rabbi Albert T. Bilgray is to lead funeral services 1:00 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Mortuary and Cemetery with burial to follow. Memorials may be sent to the Tucson Aids Project.
