NOWAK, Walter J., 69, of Vincennes, IN, passed away on Tuesday at 1:05 p.m. at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. He was born on February 27, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Arthur and Augusta (Muller) Nowak. He served in the United States Air Force for 22 years and he was employed at the Crane Naval Depot in Indiana for 23 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #1 in Vincennes and the Community United Methodist Church. After retirement he wintered in Arizona near Tucson. He is survived by his wife, Verma R. (Pyle) Nowak whom he married on August 7, 1949. Also surviving are Robert W. Nowak of Vincennes; three daughters, Estella Ford of Bruceville, Alicia Kocher of Marion, and Karen Thompson of Vincennes; one brother, Robert W. Nowak of Bloomington, Lorraine Berak of New York City, NY and Evelyn of New York City; there are also eight grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Gardner Funeral Home in Vincennes, Indiana 812-882-1167.

SALAZER (GOUDEAU), Denise Maria, 22, of Tucson, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, November 12, 1994. Denise is survived by her parents, Raymond and Lydia Goudeau; husband, Lionell Salazer; sons, Lionell, Jr. and Thaddeaus Salazer; brothers, Christopher, Raymond and Michael; sister, Blanchie Lopez; one niece. Funeral Mass 9:00 a.m. Friday, November 18, 1994 at Christo Rey Church with burial to follow. Visitation for family and friends Thursday, November 17, 1994 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Agape Church, 5400 S. Park and beginning at 6:00 p.m. at 7530 S. Camino Huivisim. SWIFT, Walter Howard “Swifty’, a Tucson resident for 49 years, died November 13, 1994 at 73 years of age. Mr. Swift is survived by a former wife and friend, Mary Sue Swift Anderson; daughter, Melinda Joy Swift; sons, Wescol H. Swift and Alan L. Swift Anderson, all of Tucson; there are also many friends and relatives. Mr. Swift was employed for 25 years by A.D.O.T. (Arizona Dept. of Transportation). Viewing will be Thursday, November 17 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY 5401 S. Park Ave., with services on Friday, November 18 at 11:00 a.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL.

CLEWIS, Peter LeRoy, 56, passed away November 11, 1994. Survived by three sons, Richard (Lynn), Patrick and Larry (Patricia); seven grandchildren; mother, Doris Clewis; three brothers and four sisters. CONTRERAS, Tiodosio H.,85, of Tucson, passed away Sunday, November 17, 1994. Preceded in death by his wife Maria. Mr. Contreras is survived by his children, Engracia (Hermineo), Marquez, Juan (Pilar) Contreras, Maria (Juan Manuel) Luna, Manuel (Nati) Contreras, Benigno (Guadalupe) Contreras, Trinidad Contreras, Francisco (Rosa) Contreras, Norberta Rodriguez, Martina (Moises) Ruiz; 31 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. CABAT, Ernest (Erni), 80, died at his home Wednesday, November 9, 1994. Survived by his wife, Rose; and three children, George (Sue) Cabat of LaPorte, TX, Michael (Susan Bettis) Cabat of Indianapolis, IN, and June Cabat of Bisbee, AZ. There are two grandsons and one great grandson. Mr. Cabat was a well known artist, residing in Tucson for the past 51 years. Memorial Services at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, November 13th at the Fraternal Order of Eagles (1530 North Stone Avenue). HOWE, Wanda G., 96, passed away November 10, 1994. Mrs. Howe was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Arch Howe in 1981. She is survived by three children, Gale Howe of Concord, CA, Betty (Roger) Solie of Oracle, AZ, John (Anna) Howe of Oro Valley, AZ; grandchildren, Dale Howe of San Juan Capistrano, CA, Darryl Howe of Lawrenceburg, IN, Darren Howe of San Clemente, CA, John Howe, Jr. of El Paso, TX, Joye Mallory of Casa Grande, AZ, Leanna Howe and Joe Howe of Oro Valley, AZ, Eva Lawhon, Oracle, AZ, Ingrid South of Catalina, AZ; and 17 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Howe came to Tucson in 1950 and since 1987 has lived in Oracle, AZ with her daughter and son-in-law Betty and Roger Solie. LIM, Marian L., 92, of Tucson, died November 10, 1994. Former owner of Lim You Grocery and Irvington Market. Mrs. Lim is survived by sons, Raymond (Estelle) Lim of Tucson and Lawrence (Carol) Lim of Santa Rosa, CA; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. SOTO, Emma V., 70, of Tucson, passed away November 9, 1994. Preceded in death by brother, Henry V. Valdenegro. Survived by mother, Luisa T. Vasquez; daughters, Barbara Clark and Mary Lou (Walt) Johnson; sons, David (Misha) and Robert (Letty) Clark; brothers, Fred Leyva and Eduardo V. Soto; aunt, Adelina Castro. Also survived by seven grandchildren, David, Monique, Jamie, Andrew, Robert, Rachel and Thomas and in loving memory by relatives and friends. Emma was a former employee of Western Auto and retired from DES State of Arizona – Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 13, 1994 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at TUCSON MORTUARY, (South Chapel), 240 S. Stone Ave., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on Monday, November 14, 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral. Cremation will follow with private interment at a later date. CUSACK, Peter J., 81, of Tucson, passed away November 11, 1994. KNAGGE, John T., 92, died November 13, 1994. Survived by his wife, Mary Knagge of Tucson; children, Thomas W. LARES, Eileen Kay, 48, was born May 20, 1946, in Buffalo, NY, and died November 5, 1994 in Tucson, AZ. “Inner peace is the birthright of every human being,’ and she has now found hers. She is survived by her three daughters, Kimberlee Joy, Erin Maree and Heather Eileen, all of Tucson; sister, Paulette Duprey of Durango, CO; brothers, Matthew Mark of Los Angeles, CA, Richard Mesik of Salt Lake City, UT and Joel Mesik of Tucson; and by Marc Hebl of Tucson, whom she always thought of as a son. Her body has died, but her soul will remain always. Private services will be held. Donations can be given to The Haven or L.A.R.C. in her name.

MATHEWS, ROBERT SMITH, 79, formerly of Athens, Ohio, died November 11, 1994 at his home in Tucson. Born in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Harry and Marie Smith Mathews, and has been an Arizona resident since 1978. He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Marjorie Beasley Mathews in 1987. He is survived by a daughter, Candace Mathews Bridgewater and her husband Erle Stephen Bridgewater of Orange Park, FL; two grandsons, Matthew Bridgewater of St. Petersburg, FL and Jay Bridgewater of Orlando, FL; one great-grandson, Erle Robert Bridgewater; three brothers, John L. Mathews of Mt. Holly, NJ, Thomas D. Mathews of Columbus, OH and Earl F. Mathews of Athens, OH. Mr. Mathews was a partner in Beasley & Mathews Ford in Athens, OH, an executive in numerous other enterprises, and was a classic car dealer in OH and AZ. Mr. Mathews, a Lt. Col. in the US Army, served in the 63rd Ordinance Battalion in Okinawa and Korea during WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star. He is the first life member of the Rotary Club of Tucson and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a founding member and Vice-President of the Arizona Economic Club, a member of the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge of Athens, OH and the Sabbar Temple of Tucson. Memorial Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, November 18, 1994 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Road, Tucson, AZ. SINGER, Mark Harold, 49, of Tucson, died Monday, November 14, 1994. Survived by his wife, Jane; daughter, Diane Singer; parents, Norman and Esther Singer; brothers, Steven (Carol) Singer, Paul (LeeAnn) Singer; father-in-law, Irving (Shirley) Greenfield. Mr. Singer was employed with Metro Information Systems of Dallas, TX, and was formerly employed with Sunquest Information Systems of Tucson. Prior to entering the Computer industry, Mr. Singer was the Mathematics Department Head at the Cambridge School of Weston in Weston, MA.
