HILL, Lester Alvah, Sr., minister, teacher, and missionary, died peacefully in Tucson, Arizona, on October 20, 1994. Born in Greensboro, Vermont on February 13, 1903, the fourth of Alvah Aaron and Grace Towle Hill’s 10 children, he is survived by two brothers, Warren C. of Greensboro Bend and Lewis R. of Greensboro. In 1927, he married Celia C. Parks, of Kimbolten, Ohio, who died in 1975. Their children are Elizabeth (Bettye) and William Braucher (Tucson), Celia and William Dentzer (Larchmont NY), Lester, Jr. and Myrtle Hill (Cincinnati OH), Winifred Hill Engle (Tucson), and foster son Anand Paul and wife Prem (Tucson). Shortly after graduating from Muskingum College (New Concord, OH), Lester, Celia, and infant daughter sailed to India to serve for one term as missionaries for the American Board of the Congregational Church, in Satara, Maharashtra State, where the other children were born, including Anand whose mother died during childbirth. For five and a half years, Lester supervised the mission’s schools, orphanages, and the small clinic which served the community. Returning to the U.S. in 1934, Lester entered Oberlin (OH) seminary, was ordained in 1937, and served congregations in North Fairfield, West Milton, and South Solon (OH). During World War II, Lester was a chaplain in the Navy, on board the USS Hamul in the Atlantic and Pacific, until his discharge as LtCmdr in 1946. He the returned to ministerial duties, first serving three congregations in Claremont County OH, then moving to Indiana (Hanna’s Creek Congregational Church), on to Illinois to churches in Chebanse, Gridley, LaHarpe, Tuscola, and Grayslake, where he served as associate pastor until his retirement in 1969. He and Celia then made their home in Cincinnati, and Lester went on with his church work, for a time as interim pastor of Port Washington United Church of Christ and on the staff of Immanuel United Church of Christ (St. Bernard) where he was named pastor emeritus. In 1984, Lester moved to Tucson and in 1991 became an associate member of Rincon Congregational Church, where a memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 13 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Carl Schroer in charge. Lester was grandfather to 17 grandchildren and great-grandfather to 13, and a 14th on the way. His many nieces, nephews, and other kith and kin live in New Hampshire, Vermont, Florida, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. Celia and Lester Hill’s legacy to their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was their love of music, art, literature, languages, history, sciences, and math, as well as a commitment to serve humankind, each in his or her own way. For their children and grandchildren, they were models of perseverance, as, despite the odds, both attained college degrees, the first in each of their families to do so, with the support of family, friends, and church, and through their own hard work and sacrifices. Although both Celia and Lester loved flowers, they preferred that contributions be made instead to Immanuel U.C.C. (Corner of Tower and Jefferson, St. Bernard OH 45217), Rincon Congregational Church, (122 N. Craycroft, Tucson, AZ 85711), Muskingum College (New Concord OH 43732), or to one’s own church. This dear, energetic man and his gentle wife were blessed with friends everywhere they lived and will be remembered by many with affection.
