GREER, Bertha M., former Tucson resident, who raised two families during her life, died July 16, 1994. She was 79. She was born in Gallup, NM. She also lived in Albuquerque, Tucson and Tempe. She died in a Scottsdale nursing home. After her two children grew up and left home, Bertha Greer moved in to help raise a family of four children left by her sister who died of cancer. The youngest was one year old, and she stayed with them until they finished high school. She was known in that household simply as “Auntie.’ She lived in Tucson during the late 1950's and 1960's. Greer was active in the Senior Citizens Center at Thoreau, NM. She is survived by a son, Bill Greer of Tucson; a daughter, Carol Pellerito of Scottsdale; brothers, Edward Marinsek of Albuquerque and Frank Marinsek of Denver; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mass is scheduled for Friday, July 22 at 10:30 a.m. at John XXIII Catholic Church in Albuquerque, NM. Family visitation is Thursday 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 at French’s Funeral Home, 7121 Wyoming St. NE in Albuquerque. No Flowers, please. Donations may go to Senior Citizen Center, P. O. HARRELSON, Virginia H. Harrelson, 65, passed away July 19, 1994. She is survived by her beloved companion, Robert Kirby; her brother, Robert Baigas; her children and their families, John Harrelson; Nancy (Harrelson) and Matt, Johnny and Erik Sylliassen; Kenneth, Rhonda, Danelle, Dawna and Dana Harrelson; Stan, Mary and Samantha Harrelson; and her extended family, Kathy (Kirby), Robert, Stevie and Alicia Montano; Kim (Kirby) and John Barnes; and Robert Kirby, Jr. Virginia moved to Tucson from New York in 1963 and loved Arizona, her friends at Levys/Foleys, and her family. JOHNSON, John McGill, 77, died July 10, 1994, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Hilda Lundy Johnson; son, Michael, his wife Annette Everlove, and their children Levi, Eloise, and Hannah, all of Tucson; son, Christopher, his wife Victoria, and their children Victoria and Lynn, all of Tucson; and daughter, Lynn Colton, her husband Peter, and their children Matthew Evans, Peter Joseph and Travis, all of Benson, Arizona. Mr. Johnson is also survived by his brother, William Johnson II of Fall River Mills, California; and two sisters, Louise Stum and Mary McWhorter, both of Tucson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Bruce Johnson. John was born in Kansas City, MO, on July 31, 1917. He obtained his civil engineering degree from the University of Arizona in 1942, and became a registered civil engineer in the State of Arizona. After serving in the United States Navy, John returned to Tucson in 1945 and joined his father and brother-in-law in Johnson Construction Company as its vice president and later, president. Johnson Construction Company was sold to Tanner Construction Company from which John retired in 1982. Following his retirement, John served as the treasurer and engineering advisor for Habitat for Humanity Tucson and, along with his wife Hilda, was active in many church ministries as well as Meals on Wheels. John was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and, an avid musician, was a member of St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church Choir and the Tucson Community Chorus. Additionally, he was an elder and deacon at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church and a long-standing member of the downtown Tucson Rotary Club. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, 3809 E., 3rd Street, Tucson, Arizona, 85716, on Saturday, July 23, 1994 at 10:00 a.m. with the Reverend Dr. Paul David Sholin officiating. SECRIST, Jeannette J., passed away Monday, July 18, 1994, after a long illness. Born November 21, 1910 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. In 1932, she received her Bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. After college she began work in a medical lab at the University of Wisconsin Medical School where she met her late husband, Dr. Delbert L. Secrist, also a well known Tucson physician and humanitarian. She was then married in 1934. In 1956, Dr. Secrist began practice at 123 S. Stone Avenue where Jeannette worked on numerous occasions as a receptionist, bookkeeper and nurse. She continued her medical interest and became President of The Pima County Medical Auxiliary where she organized numerous medical functions in Tucson. Her interest in community service grew as she became President of the Junior League of Tucson. She was an active Board member of St. Lukes Home, an organization for senior women of low income. Jeannette stayed active with her college sorority and was past president of the Kappa Alpha Theta Alumni Association at the University of Arizona. At the University of Arizona, she was a member of the “President’s Club’, the U of A Foundation and the Wildcat Club. Jeannette was a charter member of Arizona Chapter #2 Order of Eastern Star and a charter member of Olana Temple No. 131, Daughters of the Nile. She was very active in PEO, Chapter W and served many years on the Board of Directors of Brewster Home for Unwed Mothers. She was active in Trinity Presbyterian Church and served several years on its Board of Trustees. She was also a member of Tucson Country Club. Jeannette was a Daughter of the American Revolution and member of the Tucson Medical Center Foundation. In May 1975, Jeannette was named an “Outstanding Citizen of Tucson’ by the Mayor and City Council in recognition for her extensive and outstanding community service work. Jeannette is survived by three sons, Rick Secrist of Tucson, Lee Secrist, M.D. of Rolling Hills, CA, D.L. Secrist, Jr., M.D. of Solana Beach, CA; and eight grandchildren, Wendy Secrist, M.D. of Houston, TX, Trip (D.L. III) Secrist of San Diego, CA, Carie, Elizabeth, Katie, Dan, Mike and A.J. Secrist, all of Rolling Hills, CA; and three daughters-in-law, Roxann Vallentine Secrist of Tucson, Marta Secrist of Rolling Hills, CA and Jan Secrist of Solana Beach, CA. WILLIAMS, George, age 84, died Friday, July 15, 1994. Mr. Williams was born July 12, 1910 in Redkey, IN. Son of Alta Carl and Margaret Gaul Williams. He grew up in Medina, OH and married Gladys D. Dushenke on April 28, 1937. “Horace’ Williams worked in the grocery business for 42 years prior to retiring and moving to Tucson, AZ in 1975. He played the saxophone in various bands for over 60 years. He was active in the Medina community as a volunteer fireman and later in Tucson with Heartline and Garden Club. He was an active member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. He was also an active HAM Radio operator. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Kent (Brenda) of Altoona, PA and Alan (Linda) of Mitland, TX; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He will be Interred at South Lawn Cemetery following Services on Saturday, July 23, 1994 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. GARRELS, Jane T., 75, of Tucson, died Saturday, July 16, 1994. Born May 18, 1919 in Chicago, IL and moved to Tucson in 1974. Preceded in death by her former husband, Robert M. Garrels, and her daughter, Joan G. Beitin. HART, Robert J., 46, of Tucson, passed away July 15, 1994. Raised in Johnstown, NY. He received a B.S. in Education from State University College of New York in 1970 and received a Masters Degree from the University of Arizona in 1975. His 25 years of teaching included position in Jamestown, NY, Saudi Arabia and Tucson. For the last 7 and one half years he taught history and government at Canyon Del Oro High School. He was very active in the Arizona Education Association and the Armory Park Neighborhood Association. He is survived by his loving companion, Jim Allender; his parents James and Mary Hart of Johnstown, NY; two sisters; three brothers; and many loving friends.
