KAISER, Leland H., 84, passed away July 19, 1994 in Ft. Collins, CO. Born July 23, 1909 to Henry and Bertha Kaiser of Mellette, SD. He was a resident of Tucson for 44 years, moving to Ft. Collins in 1990. He is survived by daughter, Dorothy Schone of Frankfort, SD; son, Larry Kaiser of Ft. Collins, CO; son, Benjamin Kaiser of Tucson; sister, Nila DeVries of Spearfish, SD; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and close friend and cousin, Don Bindenagel. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, July 30, 1994 at 10:00 a.m. at The First Church of God, 3355 N. Fontana, Tucson, AZ with the Reverend Robert Siebels. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts or donations be sent to the “Endow The Dream’ fund at the First Church of God at the above address.

NAUMER, Helmuth Jacob, 1934-1994, native New Mexican and internationally respected museum professional loses a well-fought battle to cancer. Born May 7, 1934 in Sante Fe, New Mexico, Helmuth J. Naumer decided early in life to make service to the humanities his life’s work. Naumer’s credentials include: 1987-1994, Officer of Cultural Affairs with the State of New Mexico; 1986-1987, President, Museum of New Mexico Foundation; 1979-1987, Executive Director, San Antonio Museum Association; 1976-1979, Executive Director, Pacific Science Center Foundation; 1962-1976, Executive Director, Fort Worth Museum of Science and History; 1960-1962, Director, Charlotte Nature Museum; 1959-1960, Archaeologist in Charge, Town Creek Indian Mound, Mt. Gilead, North Carolina; 1953-1959, Manager, Taos Ski Valley, and Manager of Lake Marina, Yellowstone National Park.
Helmuth’s honors and appointments are too numerous to list, yet some include Elsie M. B. Naumberg award for national museum service and innovation in 1978, listed in Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, International Who’s Who in Art and Antiquities, International Directory of Arts, International Naturalist’s Directory, Men of Achievement, Dictionary of International Biography. In 1988, Helmuth was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the National Museum Services Board, and sustained by both Presidents Bush and Clinton. The last award presented to Naumer was by Christopher Webster and Michael Martin Murphy, the Western Spirit Award, given on the Fourth of July of this year. He was most honored to be the first recipient of this prestigious award honoring persons whose contributions are to the preservation and enrichment of the spirit of the American West.
Naumer’s major publications included one of AAM’s best selling instructional books to date, “Of Mutual Respect and Other Things, A Museum Trustees Handbook’, American Association of Museums in 1977, revised in 1988. His contribution to museum publications began early with “To Dig or Not to Dig’ when he was a young archaeologist in North Carolina in 1959. This began a long association with the printed media which expanded to television and fourteen years of weekly shows teaching children the value of museums during his Fort Worth Museum of Science and History days. It was also in Fort Worth that Naumer began a preschool from which Head Start was modeled.
Helmuth is survived by his wife, Sybil Stewart Naumer of Santa Fe; his children, Karina Ann Naumer of New York City; Helmuth Karl Naumer of Seattle; Kirsten Ann Naumer of San Antonio; Tatiana Elizabeth Naumer Percival of San Diego; Frances Suzanne Morel of Tucson; and Gabriella Truley of San Antonio; his mother, Tomee Reuter Naumer; sister, Carola of Tallahassee; Carlos Naumer of Sante Fe; and Michael Naumer of Santa Cruz, CA. Helmuth is grandfather to Erin Moldonado, Sydnee and Kyndall Percival and surrogate grandfather to Ana Maria Flores of Pecos, New Mexico.
An open house will be held Friday, July 29, 1994, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Naumer residence, #2 La Cueva Creek Road, Sante Fe County, New Mexico, to celebrate the life of this much loved and respected man. Naumer’s ashes will be spread at his home in a private ceremony. Contributions in Helmuth’s name may be made to the University of New Mexico Cancer Center for Research and Treatment, Albuquerque, or to your favorite museum.

NEWMAN, Yelmar K., died July 24, 1994. Beloved father of Kenneth and Linda; also survived by daughter-in-law, Barbara; granddaughter, Monie Byers of Fernley, NV; sisters, Ruth Crabb, Clara Gretenbury and Agnes Mahoney of Tacoma, WA. Mr. Newman was born in Roy, WA in 1920, served in the US Army in the Horse Calvary and was in the South Pacific during WWII, he worked on guest ranches as a wrangler in the Southwest, was an avid outdoorsman and a renowned engraver. In lieu of flowers, send contributions to Arizona Game and Fish Dept. Memorial Services Friday, July 29 at 7:00 a.m. at Tohono Chul Park at the Demonstration Garden.

SACHS, Sylvia Rosenfeld, 85, resident of Tucson since 1972, formerly of Chicago, IL. Beloved wife of Dr. Jack L.; devoted mother of Lois (Richard) Johnson of Tucson; and Gene (Morton) Silverman of Miami; loving grandmother to Robin (Neil) Denker; Ilene (Bryan) Smith; Mark (Andrea) Silverman; and great-grandmother to Adam, Elissa, Jenna, Michelle, Alex, Matthew, Kevin; and caring sister, Phyllis Myers; and loving aunt to many nieces and nephews. Founder of Women’s League for Crippled Children of Chicago and Timber Trail Camp Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Memorial Service to be held Thursday, July 28, at 11:00 a.m., Temple Emanu-El, 225 N. SIMPSON, Robert H., A.I.A., an architect who worked for the University of Arizona, died July 12, 1994 in Tucson due to complications from cancer. He was 73. He was educated at Cooper Union, the Pratt Institute and Columbia University. After working in naval architecture during WWII he joined the firm of Mies van der Rohe in Chicago. He lived and worked in Israel for eight years. Returning in 1958, he completed his studies and opened a private practice in New York and later in Sharon, CT. In 1979, he joined New York City’s agency for child development, Human Resources Administration, to serve as Director of Architecture and Engineering. In 1984, he moved to Tucson where from 1986 until his retirement in 1991, he was Senior Project Architect at the University of Arizona. He was an active member of the Humanist Community of Tucson, serving most recently as its president.
He is survived by his wife, Hedwig Messing Simpson; a daughter, Yael Simpson Fletcher of Atlanta; and brother, Edward Simpson of Canaan, New York. His first wife, Gerry Baron Simpson, died in 1980.
A private memorial service was held July 14. Donations may be made in his name to the building fund of the Creative Workshop, 1101 N. Painted Hills Rd., Tucson, AZ 85745, an alternative crafts program for the developmentally disabled.

EGGMAN, Pat E., 87, of Tucson, died July 23, 1994. Survived by wife, Ima; sons, Robert (Vanzlean) of Tucson, and Marshall of San Francisco, CA; daughter, Joan (Jack) Hopkins of Tucson; sister, Anita Barrette of AR; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Memorial Services Tuesday, 3:00 p.m. at EVERGREEN MORTUARY and CEMETERY, N. Oracle and W. Miracle Mile.

FLORES, Winifred P., 86, of Tucson, died July 23, 1994. KAUFFMAN, Frances R., 84, of Green Valley, died Saturday, July 23, 1994. Survived by husband, Carl A. Kauffman of Green Valley; daughters, Anne (Jack) Merritt of Tucson, Jane (Ted) Eason of VA; sisters, Merle Moore and Hazel Lehew, both of VA; five grandchildren, Elizabeth and John Merritt, Marietta Kirby, Jill Rowe and Paul Eason; four great-grandchildren, Melissa, Austin, Emily and Kristen Merritt. Graveside Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 1994 at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Rd., Tucson. LUNA, Trinidad Q., passed away July 23, 1994 in Tucson at the age of 74. Born November 13, 1919 in Raton, New Mexico. Mr. Luna was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church, retired as a copper miner from Kennecott Corporation, Ray Mines Division after 37 years. Survived by his wife, Maria; daughters, Norma Gonzalez, Rosa Maria Coronado, Marisela Nido, Palmira Northrup, Patricia Fobes, Clara Luna and Sonia McFarland; 22 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers; three sisters. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 26, 1994 from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave. Rosary will follow at 7:30 p.m. at St. Monica Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Monica. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery.

OLSON, Jessica R. Schneck, 74, resident of Tucson, died Sunday, July 24, 1994. She had her Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of Arizona. Before her retirement she was a Professor of Counseling at the University of Arizona. She was very active in numerous church and community affairs and organizations. She was always very involved with “Womens Affairs’. As a Counselor and teacher she touched many lives. Survived by her husband, Walter L. Olson; son, Walter L. Olson, Jr., of Louisville, KY; daughter, Christina Lynne Cloud of Washington, D.C.; son, Alan Joseph Olson of Salem, OR; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Wilson of Poway, CA; son, Charles Anthony Olson of Tucson; daughter, Rosemarie Ann Schwager of Redding, CA; son, Paul Michael Olson of Tucson; son, John David Olson of Tucson; son, Mark Gregory Olson of Tucson; 22 grandchildren; sister, Shirley Gidusko of Denver, CO; two brothers, Antony Schneck of Dundalk, MD and James R. Schneck of Silver Springs, MD. Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 1994, at the family residence, 8543 E. 29th Street. A Rosary is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at their residence. VERSTEEG, Henry “Larry’, died July 22, 1994 in Dallas, TX. Born September 18, 1928 in De Moines, Iowa. Survived by his wife, Shirley and children. Larry was the owner of the Versteeg’s Western Store and long time businessman. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 25, 1994 at SPARKMAN HILLCREST FUNERAL HOME, 7405 West N.W. Highway, Dallas, TX.

ABRIL, Lydia R., 63, died July 21, 1994 in Scottsdale, AZ. She is survived by her husband, Frank Abril of Tucson; children, Rene Abril of Tucson and Frances Harrison of CO; four grandchildren also survive; brothers, Alex and Victor Romero, both of Tucson. BERING, MARY LOUISE SMITH, 42, of Tucson, died July 12, 1994. In loving memory, she is survived by her children, John, Chris, Justin, Autumn and Travis. Also survived by her family members, Frank and Marilyn Smith, Cindy MacDonald, Denise Ingram, Gloria Hammond and Kim Hayden. Mary will be deeply missed. Private services are being held.

CALAHAN, Marion, 77, died July 21, 1994 after a short illness. Born in Freeland, MI. She resided in Saginaw and Midland, MI before moving to Tucson 13 years ago. She is survived by her sister, Joyce Terhune of Sommerset, NJ; her brother, Robert Stark, Jr. of Saginaw, MI; grandson, Patrick Calahan of Seattle, WA; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Calahan was preceded in death by her husband Howard and son Dennis. She was an active member of Fountain of Life Lutheran Church, secretary of Solo’s and a member of the Roadrunners at Rincon Country Mobile Home Park. Funeral Service 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 25 at BRING’S BROADWAY CHAPEL, with Pastor Eldon Weisheit officiating with interment to follow at TMP, East Lawn.
