KJELLSTROM, William I., “Uncle Bill’, 67, died Tuesday, August 23, 1994. He is survived by his mother, Esther Kjellstrom of Rockford, IL; brother, Theodore; sisters, Ruth Baxter and Louise Hemmingway; his children, Karl, Kreg, Kurt Kjellstrom, Karin Smith, Kristina Inman; and 10 grandchildren. William was born in Rockford IL, April 15, 1927. He served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947 and received an honorable discharge. He moved to Tucson, Arizona with his family in 1958. William retired in 1979. Funeral services will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 5957 S. 12th Avenue, in Tucson, on Saturday, August 27, 1994 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Arizona Lung Association or the Tucson Food Bank. CHAZEN, Ruth Edith, born August 8, 1907 in Berdichuv, Russia, she was known to most simply as “Cookie’ and passed away Sunday, August 14, 1994 at Hospice Family Care, Tucson, AZ. Cookie was preceded in death by her brothers, Max, Otto, Benjamin, and Lawrence and is survived by a niece, Lorraine Friedman of Detroit; and nephews, William Chazen of Van Nuys, CA; Harold Chazen of Buffalo, NY; and Marshall Chazen of Sacramento, CA. Cookie worked at Joseph’s, a women’s ready-to-wear store in Buffalo, NY, for 45 years, starting as a clerk, becoming the millinery, then sportswear buyer, traveling frequently to the New York City market. A legal resident of Canada and blocked by limited immigration quotas, she was unable to gain citizenship into the United States until shortly after WWII. Her brother, Lawrence was killed at the Battle of the Bulge. Cookie moved in 1967 to Tucson where she again started as a clerk in Levy’s Department Store. She worked nearly until her 80th birthday. Although not formally educated, Cookie delighted in her training at Levy’s where she could add columns of figures faster in her head than other clerks using the computer/register. Cookie never told her employer of her past successes as a buyer, preferring to be an anonymous clerk, consisting winning the “Good Apple’ customer service award. Cookie was a member of the congregation at Temple Emanuel, belonged to Hadassah and traveled to Israel several times. Remembrances can be made to the Tucson Chapter of Hadassah, 4625 E. Broadway, Tucson, AZ 85711. Funeral arrangements are through EVERGREEN MORTUARY, Tucson, AZ. Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 16, 1994 at Evergreen Cemetery. HURD, LeRoy E., 93, RMC, USN Ret., passed away August 11, 1994. Beloved father of Gloria Ryan and “other’ daughter, Gloria Trujillo of Tucson. Survived also by grandson, Lee (Jody) Ryan of Denver; great-grandchildren, Jessy, Jory, Jilly and Jake Ryan of Denver. Preceded in death by wife, Dorothy “Dolly’. He was a Plank-owner of the Battleship USS New Jersey and proudly served on her during WWII. He will be buried with the full military honors he so deserves–with the so freely given assistance from the U.S. Navy Recruiting Office and Fleet Reserve. Viewing will be Tuesday, August 16, 1994 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Mojarro (US Navy); also, Sara Salina, Sara E., Pablo, and Conchita Mojarro, all of Tucson; two grandchildren, Gabriel and Briana; brother of Adriana Felix, Francisco Mojarro, both of Guaymas, Mexico; Juan M. Mojarro, Norma A. Hetherington, and Richard P. Cramer, all of Tucson. PARRY, Evelyn J., 66, of Tucson, passed away August 13, 1994. She is survived by son, David Parry of Bisbee, AZ; sisters, Mary Grant of Tucson and Frances Gritten of AR. Evelyn was an employee of T.U.S.D. for 27 years as a Library Clerk. Visitation will be 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., Wednesday. NEWETT, John W., retired from Phelps Dodge in both Bisbee and Ajo, died August 24, 1994. He was born in Ishpeming, MI, attended school there and graduated from Michigan Tech in 1932. In World War II he served in the US Navy and the “OSS’ Strategic Services. He was a member of the Elks and the AIMME. Survivors include his wife, Vivian; daughter, Janice Coggin; stepchildren, Red Reppe and Kay Farris; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

NELSON, Myron J., 84, of Tucson, died August 11, 1994. Survived by wife, Esther; children, Jeanette (William) O`Donald of Tucson; John (Kay) Nelson of Tempe; Nadine (Robert) Rentschler of Tucson; Sandra (Russ) Weir of Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one aunt, Geneva Melgren of Tucson. He owned and operated the Rail X Ranch. He was a graduate of the University of Arizona with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church for all of his life. SCHUCK, Sara Branton, died August 9, 1994 in Tucson. She was born July 6, 1909 in Camden, NJ. She was a resident Collingswood and Cherry Hills, NJ until 1977 when she retired and moved to Tucson. For many years she was a bond underwriter for insurance companies in Camden. She was the widow of Lewis Schuck who passed away in 1953. She is survived by her dear companion and sister, Kathryn B. Gibbons; and grandnieces, Jennifer Gibbons and Katie Gibbons, all of Tucson. She will be remembered for her hobby of beautiful needlework and her fine sense of humor. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, August 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Judson American Baptist Church, 625 W. Los Altos, Tucson, Rev. Paul Williams officiating. Donations may be made to the Alzheimers Assoc. Interment will be at the Locustwood Cemetery, Erlton, NJ.
SMITH, Eugene L., of Tucson, died Thursday, August 11, 1994. He was born in Cottonwood, Arizona on September 25, 1905 to Maurice and Minnie Smith who were early pioneers in the Verde Valley. The family owned and operated a number of cattle ranches in Northern Arizona. Mr. Smith attended the University of Arizona where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. At the University he participated in various archeological expeditions with Dr. Emil Haury and was a member of the ROTC Calvary Unit and the University Band. His long and colorful career began in Phoenix in the Farm Combining business. He was also an early aviator at the Sky Harbor Airport where he delivered air mail. Subsequently, he moved to Tiger, AZ to work as a hoist operator for the St. Anthony Mining Company. From there, he moved to Morenci, AZ where he started his railroad career at Phelps Dodge. During World War II, he moved to Dunsmuir, California to work as a locomotive engineer for the Southern Pacific. His years with the railroad spanned steam engines and the introduction of diesel locomotives. He retired from the Tucson Division of the Southern Pacific in 1971. While in retirement he used his knowledge of steam to operate the Reno Steam Engine used in many movies and commercials filmed at Old Tucson. Mr. Smith was a charter member of the Marion McDaniel Masonic Lodge #56 F and AM in Tucson. He was active with the Shrine, both in the band and fundraising. Throughout his life he pursued his love of Archeology, Music, and Arizona History. Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Lera Hazel; daughter, Marilyn Holloman; his brother, Cecil Smith of Camp Verde; and sister, Agnes Ramsay of Oracle. He is survived by daughters, Shirley (Earl) Barnum of Alamo, CA; Patricia (Charles) Rondelli of Tucson; and Judith Armstrong of Suisun, CA; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Memorial Services will be held Monday, August 15, 1994, 2:00 p.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N.
