Mercedes "Dee" Heimbach

Mercedes "Dee" Heimbach, 86, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 5, 2009.

She was born on November 5, 1922 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Bernard and Anna Suleske. Dee was the youngest of nine children. She met the love of her life, the late William Heimbach, when she was 14 and married him when she was 18. They were happily married for 32 years. Dee and Bill along with their two children moved to Phoenix in 1962 where she worked for the US Postal Service for 25 years. After retiring from the Post Office, Dee spent many hours at the Devonshire Senior Center in Phoenix where she loved playing bingo and cards.

She was a devoted member of the Catholic Church. She attended Mass regularly and when she was no longer able to attend, she watched Mass on TV.

She moved to Flagstaff in 2007 to be near her daughter and family. She loved being with her family and watching her great-grandchildren play. Dee had a sweet tooth and loved her dark chocolate.

Dee was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed dearly.

Dee is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Pete) Russo of Flagstaff, her son, William (Carol) Heimbach of Ft. Collins, CO, her grandchildren, Gina (Ryan) Leingang, David (Hilliary) Russo, Teresa Russo and Christina Russo of Flagstaff and Bill Heimbach Jr. and Natalie Heimbach of Ft. Collins, CO and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bernard Suleske, her mother, Anna Suleske and all her siblings.

Dee will be remembered forever. A Rosary will be Friday, October 9th at 11am with a memorial Mass at 11:30am at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel, 16 W. Cherry Ave. Burial will follow at 1pm at Calvary Cemetery.

Peggy Joyce Freshour

Peggy Joyce Freshour died Friday, September 17, 2004 in Williams. She lost her war with cancer although she fought courageously and won many battles.

Peggy was born in Palestine, Texas October 3, 1933 to Wright and Etta Carlton Spence, the youngest of three girls. At an early age she moved with her family to Crockett, Texas, where she attended public schools and graduated from high school. She received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas, where she met her husband Martin. They were married in 1952 while he was a member of the US Marine Corps during the Korean War.

The Freshour family moved to Williams in 1966 when Martin was transferred to the Kaibab National Forest. In 1967 Peggy was hired as a sixth-grade teacher in the Williams Public Schools. She had fond memories of those ten years and of the students she had the privilege of teaching. During that time she attended Northern Arizona University and received her Masters Degree in education.

She and Martin lived eight years at Tusayan where she was also employed by Kaibab National Forest. They returned to Williams in 1984 and she retired in 1993 from Kaibab Supervisors Office Budget and Finance Department.

Peggy enjoyed camping, boating and fishing with her family and friends. She also loved gardening and cooking. Though she cherished her East Texas heritage, she embraced and loved Arizona as her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by Martin, her husband of 43 years; and her sister Martha Shaver. She is survived by her sons Martin, Jr.; William (Bill) and wife Marci; her sister Doris Griffin of Crockett, Texas; four nephews and their families, all of Crockett; brother-in-law John Shaver of Crockett; granddaughter Lela Olson and Jason and great grandchildren Madison and Jason William of Williams; and granddaughter Kristen Evans; and a circle of close and beloved friends.

A memorial graveside service will be held on Friday, September 24, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Williams Cemetery 2000 Route 66. Interment will be there also. In lieu of flowers contributions to a favorite charity are suggested.

Alan Eder
(August 7, 1928 – October 9, 2009)

Dr. Alan Eder died October 9, 2009 at 6:20 PM. He died at home, peacefully, with his wife by his side.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, and his three children: Jon Eder, Shelley Slay, and Fred Eder. He had three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Dr. Eder was born on August 7, 1928 in Buffalo, New York. He taught Philosophy of Education at Northern Arizona University from 1972 to 1991. He taught High School English in Nebraska from 1962 to 1970. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1950. Dr. Eder was a foster father to 52 children here in Flagstaff.

A Memorial Service will be held at Flagstaff Mortuary on October 24, 2009 at 2 PM. There will be no religious observance.

Dr. Eder asked that his life be commemorated with these words by Virginia Woolf:

I have sometimes dreamt, at least, that when the Day of Judgment dawns and the great conquerors and lawyers and statesmen come to receive their rewards - their crowns, their laurels, their names carved indelibly upon imperishable marble - the Almighty will turn to Peter and will say, not without a certain envy when He sees us coming with our books under our arms, “Look, these need no reward. We have nothing to give them here. They have loved reading.”

Claudia Pearl Holt

Claudia Pearl Holt, age 91, died Saturday, September 18, 2004 at Flagstaff Medical Center.

She was born August 19, 1913 in Jonesville, Virginia, a daughter of John S. and Perdie Pettite Livsay.

Claudia lived in several states including Oregon, Texas, Arkansas, Alaska, and Arizona.

She loved the outdoors, flowers, and gardening.

Claudia is survived by her sons James S. Holt of Arkansas, Paul H. Osburne of Williams and Robert W. Holt of Parks; her daughter Juanita Jennings of Parks; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her son Sam and five sisters.

Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at the Williams City Cemetery 2000 W. Route 66. A viewing will be held Wednesday from 12:30 -1 p.m. at the cemetery.

Rita C. Alexander Hodgins

Rita C. Alexander Hodgins, died on October 1, 2009 after courageously facing pancreatic cancer. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 21, 1948. Her family moved to Scottsdale, AZ in 1962 where Rita graduated from Scottsdale High School in 1966. She was a young stateside newlywed mother-to-be during the Vietnam War. And later earned two degrees from Arizona State University – a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in Multicultural Studies. She moved to Flagstaff in the late 1970’s, taught painting at Coconino Community College and was a long time art educator. Rita’s own fine art was in mixed media and she was a profilic had colorist. She was also a self-employed entrepeneur wholesaling Indian arts and was a past president of the Indian Arts and Crafts Association. Prior to her illness, she was employed by the Navajo-Hopi Observer as and advertising director, and most recently she served on the staff of the Museum of Northern Arizona as an Indian arts buyer and retail manager. During her cancer treatments, she worked writing resumes and cover letters for professionals affected by recent economic downsizing. She was also a speaker, journalist, a paralegal and marriage minister. Life long learning was her mantra. She was passionate about art, history, archeology, Native peoples, and she loved animals.

Her parents Clara and Alex Rebik, her mother in law Mary Hodgins, her maternal grandparents Emily and Fred Kutschinski and paternal grandparents Fevronia and William Rebik, preceded Rita in death. She is survived by her devoted husband and best friend L. Bruce Hodgins of Flagstaff, father in law Wellesley Hodgins of Farmington, NM, daughter and son in law Holly Ann and Dan Walker of Glendale, AZ, sister and brother in lawAlexa and Brad Hokanson of Fallbrook, CA, and twin grandchildren Noël Walker and Alexander Walker of Glendale. In addtion, there are many other beloved friends and colleagues from all walks of Rita’s life. A memorial serivce will be held on Monday October 26, 2009 at 1:00 pm at Lozano’s Flagstaff Mortuary, 2545 N. Fourth Street, per Rita’s request, if you plan to attend the memorial service, please do not wear black. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Northland Hospice, PO Box 997, Flagstaff, AZ 86002

Clyde E. Way

Clyde E. Way, age 73, died Saturday, September 18, 2004 at Flagstaff Medical Center.

He was born July 11, 1931 in Portland, Oregon, a son of Clifford E. and Ruth E. Wilhelm Way.

Clyde was a decorated Army Veteran of the Korean War.

In 1952, Clyde married Norma J. Moore in Lordsburg, New Mexico. The family settled in Flagstaff in 1962.

He worked for several construction firms in the Flagstaff area as a construction coordinator.

Mr. Way was a Mason, Shriner and a National Youth Director for the VFW.

He was an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and in recent years, hiking the local forest trails.

Mr. Way is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Norma; his daughters Leiann (James) Morris of Flagstaff, Denise (Bruce) Barnhardt of Glendale, and Rhonda (Billy) Henson of Flagstaff; his son Bill (Kim) Way of Flagstaff; his brother Larry Way of Phoenix; eleven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and his beloved dog Hannah.

He is preceded in death by his parents Clifford and Ruth.

Clyde touched the lives of everyone he met with his good-natured generosity and loving friendship. He will be dearly missed.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 24, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Flagstaff Mortuary 2545 N. 4th Street. A viewing will be held Thursday the 23rd from 6-8 p.m. and Friday from 1-2 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment will follow the services at Citizens Cemetery 800 S. Verde.

Mary McKain

Longtime Flagstaff resident Mary McKain, 60, died Wednesday morning at Olivia White Hospice Home.

She was born in Tennessee in 1949 and moved to Arizona in 1969. Mrs. McKain was well-known and appreciated by many locals for her devoted laundry services at White Flag Laundry on South Beaver Street.

She is survived by her children, Derrick McKain and Thelma McKain, both of Flagstaff, and Angie Williams, who is serving in the U.S. Air Force and is stationed in London.

Mrs. McKain is also survived by four grandchildren and her beloved dog of 14 years, Buttons Marie McKain.

Mrs. McKain fought a valiant battle with ovarian cancer for eight years, while she continued to work at White Flag Laundry.

There will be a public memorial service Friday at 5 p.m. at Lozano's Flagstaff Mortuary, 2545 N. Fourth St. Send condolences to the mortuary at www.lozanos-flagstaffmortuary.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Olivia White Hospice Home, call 226-1915.
