Dr. Garland Downum

Dr. Garland Downum, a longtime Flagstaff resident, died peacefully on November 15th at the age of 97, surrounded by loving family members.

He was born in Leavenworth, Kansas on January 17, 1907. After earning a B.A. and M.A. in history from the University of Kansas, Garland enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin where he met fellow graduate student Evelyn Benson. Garland and Evelyn were married in Austin on June 17th, 1939, the same year that he earned a doctorate in European History.

Garland and Evelyn moved to Flagstaff in 1944 when Garland accepted an appointment to teach history at what was then Arizona State Teachers College at Flagstaff. His numerous contributions during his thirty-two year career helped Northern Arizona University grow from a small state teachers’ college to the multi-purpose university it is today.

Dr. Downum was particularly interested in libraries. He chaired the University Library Committee for fifteen years during a crucial period in the library’s development. He developed NAU’s pre-law program, the paralegal curriculum, and helped found the local chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the honorary society in history. He was instrumental in the founding of the Honors Program at NAU and introduced the university’s first Honors course, The Enlightenment. One of his favorite teaching assignments was the course on historical methods and trends which was a core requirement for beginning graduate history students. His professional affiliations included membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Alpha Theta, the American Association of University Professors, the American Historical Society, the Rocky Mountain Social Science Association, the French Colonial History Association, and the Society for French History Studies.

Dr. Downum’s colleagues recognized his scholarship and leadership in 1972 by choosing him to be the 1972 Honors Convocation speaker. In May of 1976 the first University Faculty Association Scholarship was awarded to a student in Dr. Downum’s name.

Dr. Downum retired from NAU in 1976 but continued his active role in the community. In 1983 his book “A Flagstaff Heritage: The Federated Community Church” was published. He was a longtime member of the Malpais Kiwanis Club and served as its treasurer for many years. He served as the president of the Community Concert Association, was the founding president (1964 – 1970) of the Flagstaff branch of Goodwill Industries and was a longtime member of the Flagstaff Library Board. In 1996 Garland and Evelyn jointly received the Arizona Library Association’s Rosenzweig Award for their many years of work and support for Arizona libraries.

As a summer Forest Service employee in his beloved northern Arizona woods, he was often seen carrying groceries and supplies on his back to the Mt. Elden lookout in the days when there were only foot trails up the mountain. Two of his early summers in Flagstaff were spent with his family as the lookout on Deadman Mountain and Slate Mountain. His love for the outdoors endured throughout his life.

Dr. Downum is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Evelyn, three children, Philip (Marilyn) Downum of Flagstaff, AZ, Carolyn (Larry) White of College Station, TX, and Janice (Joe) Barnett of Ponder, TX; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. His family will always remember Garland with love and respect as a man whose life exemplified his core values.

Services will be held on Saturday November 27th at 10:00 a.m. at the Federated Community Church. Burial will be in the family plot in the Sedona Community Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Downum Scholarship Fund (NAU Foundation, Box 4094, Flagstaff, AZ 86011), the Federated Community Church (400 W. Aspen Ave., Flagstaff, AZ 86001) or the Flagstaff Public Library Foundation (300 West Aspen, Flagstaff, AZ 86001).
